2008 Spanish Olympics Basketball Team
Pepu Hernandez just got fired by the president of the spanish basket federation.... 2 months before the Olympics....
A conflict between both has been the reason. 90 % of spanish population (votes in marca.com) disagreee this decision. The Coach made Spanish National team a contender in the last years.

Imo USA just won the gold at the Olympics.

It's has been a shame. The president of the Spanish Basketball Federation tryed to make people go against Pepu Hernandez, but here everyone knows who is who. He said that Pepu didn't respected his contract, so he can fire him, but everyone still remembers how Pepu coached our team in the final of the World Champs just the day after his father dead.
It's a shame, but our "beloved" president won't go home, that's for sure
BTW, now, I'm with Argentina, since none of our players has acted like a true man.

Seriously, it was a dumb move at the wrong time too... but now, who is the main candidate for the coach job?
I hope Aito Reneses (ex DKV joventut) is the replacement. Thats a very nice coach too, plus i think he could bring Ricky Rubio to the Olympics

Well, the new Spanish coach, Aito Garcia Reneses, just smashed my country (coached by Moncho Lopez) with 84-35, embarrassing...

The most impresive for me in these 2 matches is the way Ricky is playing. It's like if he has been playing in this team for a long time. The defense has been almost perfect, with the same intensity as Joventut played. In offense they must play some game more to improve some plays.

Last night's Spain-Argentina game, barely won by the Spaniards, 90-88, was one of the greatest exbhibition (i.e., meaningless) games I've ever seen - hard-fought, with some brilliant play on both sides. The most significant fact: Manu GinĆ³bili played 21 minutes, led all scorers with 18 points, and his ankle didn't give him any trouble (though he was exhausted - he hadn't played so many munutes for months...).

Re: 2008 Spanish Olympics Basketball Team
Tonight's game against a strong Lithuanian team, easily won by Spain (91-66), should be scary for Spain's opponents: Pau Gasol, with just a few practices under his belt, is still very far from his best shape (8 pts, 3 rebs in 20 mins), but the Spaniards hardly even notice it. Inside, the Reyes-Marc Gasol duo totalled 27 pts-11 rebs; outside, Rudy and Navarro totalled 30 pts. Oh! And Garbajosa found a second between games to fly to Madrid and sign a two-year deal with Khimki - $3.2 milion per season, tax free. Apartment, car and a chauffeur on 24-hour call, like Carlos Delfino. They weren't getting those fringe benefits in Toronto...

I don't know how many of these exhibitions they're showing in the States, but tonight/today, Saturday the 26th, Spain is playing Argentina again at 8:30 Spanish time, which is 3:30 EST.

Re: 2008 Spanish Olympics Basketball Team
Do I sense a bit of one-upmanship in the air? The US just beat Canada, a second-tier team from the Americas, by 55 points... so Spain tonight beat Hungary, a second-tier team from Europe, by 58 points, 103-45. This time the Gasol brothers were the big act with 52 points (32 by Pau) - more than half Spain's total. The combination of help-out man-to-man defense and ball-movement offense by Spain is something that even Coach K and Mr. Guarantee, LeBron James, should keep tabs on in order to avoid unpleasant surprises in Beijing...

Re: 2008 Spanish Olympics Basketball Team
Spain is head and shoulders above any other international teams right now, their defense is excellent, especially the interior one and actually i give them even chances of beating Team USA in the group game. I think it's bad for them that they have to face US in the group, since they may have to play them again later in the tournament and the Americans would have learned a lot from the first game.
Oh, and Hungary is more like a fourth-tier team, when is the last time they played in a Eurobasket? Useless friendly, Spain actually needs to play against teams that can present some sort of challenge.

Re: 2008 Spanish Olympics Basketball Team
This friendly was a last-minute makeup game when Croatia pulled out of the July 28 date. But Spain has played Argentina twice, Lithuania and Russia and has beaten each of them by 25 or more points. Hungary last played in the Eurobasket A in 1999, but I don't see their current team (which is very weak) as any weaker than the joke of a roster, with zilch NBA players or NBA wannabes, which Canada put up against the US last weekend.
Who says AĆto will show his stuff in the group game? Krzyzewski may be in for a few surprises...
