If the Childress process is any indication, though, the Hawks are not too keen on a sign-and-trade. Childress himself said there were two championship-level teams interested in talking sign-and-trade with the Hawks, and Suns VP David Griffin confirmed that Phoenix was one of those teams. "We were open to talking about it, but it never got very far," Griffin said.
Childress's agent, Lon Babby, confirmed that. "Phoenix was as close as we came to getting something done on a sign-and-trade. But I never got the sense that the Hawks were interested in that route."
When you look at the roster for Phoenix it becomes apparent how hard a S&T with BYC issues is to pull off. The only offers I could match up were Diaw for Childress and Zaza (which would suck) or Barbosa and Bell for Childress and Speedy (which would suck for Phoenix).
We have limited pieces to attach in a S&T which makes it so difficult to do. Solomon doesn't make enough to really help. Zaza opens up a hole that where we're already lean. Speedy's health would make the other team pause. Mike Bibby creates a hole at PG and makes the deal larger than most teams want (from what I've heard they prefer to pick the Hawks bones on the cheap). It makes no sense to include Marvin, Joe, Al, or Acie (low salary) from the Hawks point of view. The revelation that Phoenix was one of the S&T partners that had camp Childress so riled up shows me that they were unrealistic about what is possible and the extent the Hawks should have gone to please them.
