Deng, Bulls on verge of six-year, $70M deal

That status appeared to be slammed home Tuesday night when NBA front-office sources told ESPN.com that Deng and the Bulls, after more than a year of slow-moving negotiations, are suddenly on the verge of completing a new contract that will keep the restricted free agent in Chicago.

With Deng committed to leaving for England by week's end to join Great Britain's national team -- and insisting to the Bulls that he would not negotiate with them further without a deal by Friday -- sources said that the sides have verbally agreed on a new six-year pact believed to be worth in excess of $70 million.

Sources said that Deng's agent, Jason Levien, flew into Chicago to spend Tuesday at the Bulls' offices finalizing the deal, which could be announced as soon as Wednesday.

Good for the bulls, hopefully they get gordon's deal done also

Its just about the same he was offered last year. 5/57.5 = 11.5 per year. 6/70 = 11.67 per year.

Seriously, what the hell is going on? Why are near-max contracts being handed out to players like Biedrins, Okafor, and Deng? These are all players who are at best the 3rd best player on a good team. Probably even worse for Biedrins, like 4th. Why are these players getting 60-80 million dollars? If the 3rd best player on a good team is demanding that much, how much are the 2nd best and the best players demanding?

Dwight Howard got a 5 year $80 million extension last year. And now, Luol Deng could be earning just as much except in one extra year. This is madness. Do the Bulls really think Deng is worth a little less than the best big man in the league?

Do the Orlando Magic really think Rashard Lewis is worth MORE money than Dwight Howard?

I don't think they really believe that, but they paid Lewis more than Howard anyways, LOL.

Biedrins has essentially a 5/45 deal. It's 6/54 with the last year as a player option. That's a steal.

But that's different though. Lewis wasn't coming off a rookie contract like Howard and Deng are, and the Magic weren't trying to retain him. They were competing with a whole bunch of other teams to bring him to their team. But still, they grossly overpaid Lewis by about 20-30 million.

What happened to the 6/63 figure reported?

6/63 is with full incentives. I think a certain number of games played, making the all star team, that kinda stuff. no way he makes the all star team. and if he does, 6/63 is definitely worth it.

You don't know what the incentives are.... It could be something as simple as playing in 75+ games and shooting a certain FT%.... or the team winning 50+ games.

The Article I saw on the incentives said it was him playing in atleast 69 games per year & keeping averages atleast right around what he averaged last season. Not exactly 10 mil a year numbers, but hey, it's good to be a 7 footer!

Insane. I can kind of see the deal for Okafor making sense, since big men are generally paid a premium in the league, but Deng for over $10,000,000 per season? What's he done to deserve that?

Put up 19/7 on a 49 win team with insane efficiency and good defense?

If he returns to that and improves this deal is excellent. If not, well, of course it sucks.

6/70 is not near max.

6/70 is not 5/80.

Just because Deng got (and may be worth) 6/70 does not mean he's worth almost as much as Dwight Howard, it means the max restricts Howard from earning what he's worth.

With no max salary this year Deng would have gotten... 6/70.

Howard would have gotten more than 5/80.

That's A LOT of $ for him.

Overpaid definitely.

They kept on holding out trying to see if they could get him @ a lower rate from last year, but they gave him the same offer?

I don't get it. -- They were probably scared he'd go overseas that they met his agent's demands......

The Ellis and Biedrins signing ended all excuses for these organizations. They have to now come up with comparable deals. They pay Deng that amount I say they are letting Gordon go.

It's a little more than Cliff Levingston thought he'd get, but at least it's nice to have the deal done so more progress can be made. ICLO, if Deng is healthy, he's going to blow up petty nicely with Rose running the point.
