Re: Josh Smith
I guess it would be quite difficult because of the BYC.
I guess Smith would want significantly more money than what Wallace salry is, so I would pass. I don't think this would make us better enough to be worth getting used to Crash not being on roster.

Re: Josh Smith
Isn't it Atlanta, in this situation, could only take back 1/2 of what Smith was offered? And Charlotte would have to cap space?
So all we could do is offer them Matt or Nazr with a 1st or two for Smith.
I'm kind of hoping that he takes (and they offer) his Qualifying offer for this season.
I want him to be a Piston, wouldn't mind him being a Bobcat.

Re: Josh Smith
OK, Memphis signs Smith to an offer sheet, $58M, not sure of the term, but I've got to believe it's 5 years based on the going market rate. I guess they'll finally force Atlanta's hand. It's about time.
I think the Hawks are going to blow their chance to have a quality team. They looked tough last year in the playoffs. Now their depth is bad, and the cheap owners will have to shell out a ton of money to keep their young asssets (welcome to our world).

I continue to wait...and hope...for the return to Hornet's glory.

Re: Josh Smith
Hawks will probably match the Grizzlies offer. If they don't they are idiots.
That said, they've had poor depth for years. The trade for Bibby trimmed it down even further. Now they've lost Childress and replaced him with Maurice Evans. If they match on Smith, they won't be that far off from last year.
I don't think its enough to make playoffs (downgrade of Childress to Evans and not adding any real help (Randolph Morris???), but they aren't having that horrid of an offseason. Its just they don't ever seem to do anything. Its like they think the JJ add gives them amnesty from any other improvement for 5 years or so.

Re: Josh Smith
The Hawks were lucky enough to make the playoffs last year anyway. That should have been us. We added an idiot coach, Miami fell of the map, Chicago inexplicably sucked, etc. It was a fluke they made the playoffs last year anyway, and I'm guessing it will be a fluke that won't be repeated this year.
As for Smith, what the hell are they thinking? I can't imagine Atlanta not matching. Assuming it is a long-term deal, that's a pretty reasonable contract. If it's something less, and he's getting like 15m/year, sure, I could understand that. But as it stands, it just seems like the Varejao situation with us last year, except you would think there's zero chance Atlanta lets him go, especially if the contract is right around 10m-11m/year.

Exactly what I was thinking. ATL has said repeatedly they'd match a max deal; they should be opening champagne after this came out.

Re: Josh Smith
Smith is stupid. He should have taken the QO and become UFA next year, then he can go where he wants. Instead he gets less money to stay in Atlanta for the next 5 years. Ugh, thats gotta be hell for a player.

There seems to be debate on whether he actually signed it or not. Maybe we'll see a JJ type situation where they offer it and Smith tells ATL not to match or else he'll take the QO. Thing is, that's only a little over 3 million, so he could end up losing 7-8 million next year alone.
ATL (reportedly) was really lowballing him, supposedly only offered 5/45.

Re: Josh Smith
hmmm...
Somebody should correct me if I´m wrong but I believe once Smith signs an offer sheet he is locked in to either the Grizzlies or the Hawks. He can´t take it back and take the QO.
JJ as I recall, signed the offer sheet with the Hawks and Instructed the Suns not to match. (Which I guess, strictly speaking, they were not required to do)

If he signed (and according to the wiretap he did and the Hawks have already matched) then you're right, there's only 2 options.
With JJ I don't think he signed as there was a moratorium; however during that period while that offer was hanging out there JJ told the Suns he didn't want them to match. Instead, they worked a S&T, something that couldn't have been done if he'd actually signed the offer sheet.
