Gameplans with Artest

Post#1 » by DraftBoy10 » Thu Jul 31, 2008 3:49 pm

I've watched Artest play a lot, and I see 1 on 1 he's just about a big of a mismatch as there is out there. However, offensively are we going to integrate something entirely different, or you think he'll just go in what we got?

What about shot attempts? Yao gets his share, and isn't really anything more of an post up player, but McGrady I fear will become even more lazy by relying on Artest a lot.

I think the undermining question is....are teams going to put their best D player on Ron or Tracy?

What do you think and why?

to start the game (if both are on the court) they will put their better wing defender on T-Mac
then that better wing defender will be on whoever is hotter in the game

That just opens up Ron in the post though, to be honest, that may be more dangerous than McGrady especially considering McGrady will opt for jump shooting.

Tracy is still the better offenssive player , you have to put your best defender on him.
Artest will probably have a matchup he can exploit everynight , not only most teams doesn't have 2 good defnders for Ron and Tracy , sometimes Ron will be guarded by someone who is a crappy defender and is also undersized.
I love it.

don't get too excited
for some reason Artest just like to get hot playing against us
actually his overall fg% isn't much higher than T-Mac

T-Mac is more skilled on offense
he's a much better playmaker

I think thats the point dude. We now have another guy in our lineup capable of beating up on an average defensive player. Very few teams...in fact we might be the only one...have 2 good to great perimeter defenders. Artest is a post up guy. Spot up shooter. Can run off screens. Will occasionally put the ball on the deck and bull his way to the basket. He is a guy that can create a high % shot for himself. McGrady is also a guy like that. That fact that teams have to decide who they are gonna pay the most attention too will directly influence the other guy's effectiveness. It use to just be stick him on McGrady. Now they gotta think about it on a day to day basis. Because we can now make them pay for extra attention on McGrady.

Thing is Artest doesn't beat up on just an average defensive player, he takes other teams best on nights too. I know I'm going to use the Warriors as an example, but they put Jackson on him, and he goes to work. The Spurs struggle to match up with Artest alone, just about all teams did when Artest was the #1 option.

Here at the #3 option, but #2 on the perimeter, you really, really got to pick you're poision. However, our main competitors....the Utah Jazz may have a good matchup with us, with Harpring on Artest, and Kirilenko on McGrady. And even the Lakers with Kobe on Tracy, and Lamar on Artest.

Also defensively, I hope with Shane getting about 30mpg from the bench, I assume all will be on the other teams best player, and Ron picking up the left over minutes? If so, we're going to shutdown two of the other teams best offensive options on the perimeter. I hope we go out of our way to get some PGs shut down too, I think we can cross match that to our advantage.

If you're looking at his career FG%, over the past 5 year's he's been a different player for the most part (save for his first year in sacto)

FG: 1303 / 2988 = 0.436
2p: 1041 / 2237 = 0.465
3p: 262 / 751 = 0.348

Conclusion: He's a little 3p happy.

I started a new NBA Live 08 season with Artest on the Rox

My lineup is:

Rafer
Tmac
Artest
Battier
Yao

I'm already killing teams offensively and defensively and the big 3 is averaging over 20 a game.

Artest is leading the league in steals.

Signs of things to come this upcoming season.

No one can stop him

Also, he is a freakin great shot blocker in the game better than in real life

He swats everything that comes his way

You have Nba live 08 for the PC right Max? not Wii?

Yeah, I'm so pumped, I'm about to dust off NBA 2K8. Not sure what lineup I'll go with just yet though. Should be fun. So many options. The great thing is they made Steve Francis really good on there so I may have to squeeze him into my rotation.

Stevie is superb in 2k8.

However, I try to keep it as realistic as possible, I bumped up Landry's abilities and got Artest on the team.

We're incredibly hard to stop cause I use to play with the Kings & Artest a lot, now that he joins the Rockets, i know his game so well.

The main thing about getting that 3rd scorer wasn't about who the other team's best defender will be on, it's about having at least 2 potent offensive options on the floor at all times. That is where almost all of HOU's offensive woes stem from, when there is only 1 real option on the floor and defenses completely lock in. Artest is a great fit here since he's both a threat on the wing and the post, essentially being able to produce when either star rests.

I agree with Draftboy that Utah can match-up defensively pretty well with T-Mac and Artest with AK and Harpring (not so much LA, imo Odom isn't a very good defender), but even so with 2 wing threats they can tire out their defenders rather than rotating defenders and having fresh legs vs T-Mac the whole game.
