JC to Orlando for Fran+pick? (Steve Kyler Rumor)

Post#1 » by cedric76 » Thu Jul 31, 2008 7:01 pm

The Memphis Game: The Memphis Grizzlies are the lone team in the NBA sitting on a meaningful amount of cap space, more than $14.6 million in space to be exact. The NBA Collective Bargaining Agreement requires every team to spend at least 75% of the salary cap, and that exactly where the Grizzlies are sitting right now, and do not look to be moving off that number any time soon. The Grizzlies roster actually looks pretty good on paper, and maybe that will generate some buzz for the Grizz at the box office, because the team is getting absolutely killed financially in Memphis. So much so that almost every expert in the league believes if the situation does not improve soon, Michael Heisley may try to move the team again. Somewhere in Vancouver there is a great giggle resonating through the Great White North. Heisley has tried to sell the team before, and found that after close examination of the books and the business that the Grizz are more than just a loser on the floor, killing the value. The Grizzlies got run pretty badly for trading Pau Gasol to the Lakers for virtually nothing, but the move was not about basketball, the move was entirely about getting the Grizzlies to the minimum NBA salary. The Grizzlies have been exploring ways to get even further below the minimum salary number; such as trading Javaris Crittenton to Orlando for Fran Vasquez's rights and a future draft pick. Vasquez counts against the cap and the NBA minimum, but no dollars have to be paid out. The Grizz were also said to be exploring ways to get a hold of Nenad Krstic before he opted for Europe in a similar cost cutting move, get his rights let him walk to Europe, get an additional $2 million off the books. It's fair to say the Grizzlies do not need to spend any money as their roster is set, but when you wonder why Memphis is not moving with its cap space, it's for a lot of reasons not about basketball.

Lewis,Battie,cook

that is a 14 men roster

yea, and we'd still have the TPE to buy another 1st rounder next year or whenever the future 1st was used...but, idk...seems too easy...BTW, Dave and Otis love Fran like no ones business...

even if u like fran,i dont think we could pass on such a deal
the TPE could get use a late 1st anyway (or even an early 2nd)
so it is basically fran for JC str8 up

There is some truth to Memphis and Orlando continuing discussions...

Orlando cut Auggie to make room for Critt's salary, now the terms of the
deal are in Orlando's court... It's on Otis to make the deal... whether its
JJ or Fran's rights is up to Otis, but it will cost a future draft pick.

Supposedly this is what the Steve Kyler person just updated through somebody.

the TPE could get a mid 1st at 3.4 million or an early 1st in a package if a team (Port) is ditching on draft day...based on track records, Dave and Otis are not apologizing for draft picks that people see as busts or boneheaded, JJ is still here and 3 years later, Fran's rights still in the pocket...

This would be a steal if we could pull this off. I doubt it actually happens.

see what i'm saying...

Using the words “absurd,” “ridiculous,” and “preposterous,” Grizzlies general manager Chris Wallace refuted an assertion on HoopsWorld.com today that the Grizzlies are interested in trading Javaris Crittenton to the Orlando Magic for the rights to Spanish forward Fran Vasquez in what would essentially be a cost-cutting move.

Wallace talked to Beyond the Arc via cell phone from the Athens airport, where he landed today for a vacation, and characterized the HoopsWorld report as “reaching for straws.”

“We’ve never had a conversation with Orlando about Fran Vasquez and we have no interest in Fran Vasquez,” Wallace said.

of course to the faithful, this is just some excellent smokescreening on Wallace's part...

Vasquez counts against the cap and the NBA minimum, but no dollars have to be paid out.

If something does indeed happen, I think this is the key right here.

They've got to meet the minimum salary of $44.01 million; however, if they are truly determined to pay as little money as possible, they can meet the minimum without actually dishing out $44.01 million.

I don't know if that is their goal or not, but if so, this is where Vazquez could come in handy, as opposed to, say, Redick.

Vazquez counts against the cap for $1,661,300. In other words, the Grizzlies could spend $1.66 million less than the $44.01 million minimum cap threshold (42.35), while still meeting the requirements of the minimum salary.

So, while also meeting their short-term needs, they would have Fran as a potential asset for the future, as well as another future asset in a 1st rounder.

-If they simply kept Crittenton, they would have to pay his salary, obviously.

-If they did a deal for, say, Redick and a pick, they would have to pay Redick's salary, obviously.

-If they did a deal involving the Trade Exception and a pick, the Trade Exception would count towards the cap without them actually having to pay anything, but involves the main asset being only a draft pick.

-Lastly, if they did a deal involving the Trade Exception, Fran, and a pick, the Trade Exception and Fran would count towards the cap, plus they would have the future assets of not only the pick, but possibly Fran as well.

If they are truly looking to sit at the minimum salary as well as actually pay as little as possible, this last scenario seems like one of the best bets.

"We have no interest in Fran Vasquez" neither do I.

Critt would be nice but it doesn't seem like the trade will happen, I wouldn't mind if it did but its been talked about for weeks maybe a month with the Quinn rumors it seems like this deal is on the back burners.
