personally, i think the mavs need to get rid of josh howard and one of either jason terry or jerry stackhouse.
josh howard is a very overrated player...try n get rid of him for josh smith or the likes...get a bit younger, and improve on defense. i think the mavs and hawks can cope with a sign and trade.
secondly, get rid of either jason terry or jerry stackhouse for a young pg to back up jason kidd...
i dont think the jason kidd experiment failed. the mavs just never really got a chance to practice and showcase....i would trade jason terry or jerry stackhouse for a decent young pg like jordan farmar, louis williams, etc who can backup kidd.
kidd/farmar
stackhouse
josh smith
dirk nowitzki
erick dampier
btw, dirk nowitzki is a top 3 power forward, next to kg and duncan....he actually has more offensive weapons since he can make it rain triples, and i DO believe his a legit 1st option. hes shown it before. he just needs to be a little "rejunvinated."
some minor "get young" techniques and the mavs are back in it. (i think the mavs will finish 2nd in the west conf. behind da lakers)

I know that's the last thing any Mavs fan would ever consider doing, but you won't come close to getting the most out of JKidd with Dirk playing like a guard. I think Pau for Dirk would be a great deal for both teams, as they need the opposite from their bigs.
Ideally the Lakers could keep Pau & trade Lamar for a star SF who is a great outside shooter.. But his value just isn't high enough.. Dirk could play as a SF on offense while Lamar operates closer to the paint.. for Dallas they get a star foward with great low post moves who will throw down plenty of Kidd 'oops..
I agree, but who is realistic? You wouldn't want to downgrade, and pulling in a Boozer or Stoudemire probably wouldn't fly with the opposing team.

They had a chance at Jermaine O'neal but refused to pull the trigger on it. I think the deal involved Jason Terry and Josh Howard. I might be wrong though.

Avery stressed so much about the importance of having a Guard to close out ball games. I think he overrated it.
IMO, the Mavs were embarrassed by the upset against the Goldenstate the previous year during the play-offs. And they were finding for a backcourt combo that could match up well with Baron and Monta.Logically, the Harris-Terry combination might have worked, but it didn't. And again, I think they overrated it.
What they could have done is instead of trading for Kidd, they could have traded for VC instead. Yeah, the guy doesn't have a heart. But that guy could very much solve a team need than Jason Kidd. Who is the Mavs playing at the starting Sg spot? Stackhouse? Eddie Jones? This ain't the 90's any more when both these dudes were playing at their prime.
VC could have given them the tertiary option on offense. And could very much solved a team need at the SG position. A line-up of Kidd-VC-J Howard-Dirk and Dampier could very much put them at the elite position in the west.
What they could do right now is to trade Kidd while his stock is pretty high. I would say trade him to the Cavs and get overpaid by their depth/talent. The Cavs would give alot for Kidd, they might use Kidd to convince Lebron to stay with them in 2010.
They wouldn't have been able to trade for both Kidd AND VC.

They didn't just trade a prospect, they traded a young stud who was arguably just about as good as an aging Kidd.
The two most controversial trades last season ending up blowing up horribly for their respective teams(Mavs & Suns). You'd think that one of them may have turned out decently, but thus far it doesn't look like it.
If the Mavs can't find a way to win with Kidd, they need to start rebuilding..Trade everyone for young players and sink to the bottom of the lottery.. they won't have much of a choice. Dirk's already 30 so he can't really be incldued in any rebuilding plans.

The thing about them trading Harris is that Harris wrecked havoc on opposing guards. Tony Parker was openly happy about the trade. Harris was quick, lengthy, and had a lot of potential to get a lot better. I realize Dallas is in a win-now state, but I still think this was a huge mistake.

^^ Good point. Harris also seemed to get the best out of Josh Howard. Without Harris now, Howard has really gone down hill. Its like they traded both players for JKidd.
Like the Suns, the Mavs have missed their chance at a title. Most teams in the West made moves to get better while they stood still. I really don't know what they can do short of start rebuilding now. Perhaps a major trade to try and get a second superstar to compliment Dirk but with their payroll as high as it is it looks unlikely.

I think they should see how they can mold together this year and next if it's not good blow it up.
Anyone who watches the Mavs closely knows that Avery was a big problem. Now that he's gone I think it will open a bit more. Players got tired of Avery's act and stopped listening and I think most of the problem lies with Avery.

first off they need a proper center. trade josh howard out of the league and get jim mcilvaine to unretire. they could then waive diop who only has another 5 years left.
jason kidd can't shoot. waive him and sign a real sharpshooter like hubert davis, he'll help spread the floor.
stackhouse is too bald and doesn't know how to talk to the press. brian scalebrine fills both of those needs so trade him to boston. throw in a second rounder if you have to.
i like jason terry, he was on my fantasy team a few years ago and proved to be a great sleeper so they should keep him.
i didn't like the new coach signing either. mark cuban led his company to great profits, i'm sure he could lead the mavs to a championship. he could hire whoopi goldberg to be assistant coach.

Well it's all painfully obvious now, isn't it. I saw this all the way when the rumors of the trade first started. It was such a stupid, stupid decision, made out of panic and with little regard for long term consequences. The Suns and the Mavs used to be the cream of the crop when it came to the Western Conference. Both teams panicked in the arms race last year and made really stupid decisions, and now they're both stuck in bad situations, faced with the prospect of mediocrity with nowhere to go short term OR long term.
Shoulda never given up Devin Harris.
What was even dumber than giving up Devin Harris? Expecting Jason Kidd to flourish under a control-freak coach like Avery Johnson. Mark Cuban at this point has to be seriously considering just giving up basketball.

I suppose he might give it up, especially if he ends up buyng the Cubbies. But I think he'll want to try the prestige of owning two major sports franchises first. He's offered half of his net worth to buy the Cubs ... that's an incredible investment even for a billionaire. If it goes through, it'll be much more important to him than the Mavs are.
