Another thread lost in the "upgrade."

I played Blue Mash in Olney today and all I can say is boooooo

Course was in mediocre shape, and there wasn't a pretty hole on the course. Power lines and ugly buildings everywhere.

Anyone play Penderbrook or Falls Road (two of my old faves) recently> Can anyone report on what kind of shape they're in?

Cheers, I live across the street from PenderBrook. It's a little tight and short but not bad for a Semi privet course. Great rates for weekdays. I'd rather play Twin Lakes for that area (2 courses to select from.) usless $$$ is an issue.

I belong to Laurel Hills (Semi-Privet) down in Lorton. Golf Digest rated it #8 in the U.S. for new courses added in 2007. It's not an easy course lots of up and down holes. 7011 from the tips and the slope is 143. Fairways and greens are in great shape, The greens are very fast. Large bunkers very tall. L.H. is a boomers course big wide open fairways but dont let that fool you. Trouble means trouble on this course.

Course is SKYCADDY friendly....... I hope you have a sand game, your going to need it.

In the 50's it housed a Nike Nuke on #7 the command center is the small building to the left.

I haven't golfed in over a year (pre-stroke), but the course I enjoyed playing most at the times was Bull Run. It's well-maintained. It was recently bought by a Japanese company that buses Japanese businessmen in to play during the week. I'm eager to get back out and play soon, but I fear my left arm/hand aren't up to the task just yet. I've practiced hitting whiffle balls in my backyard one-handed, but it ain't pretty. I'm a righty and golf righty, but I think i could hit more consistently using my left hand. at any rate, when/if i do decide to get back out there and play my first post-stroke 9, I'll be looking for some hackers to play with, ideally people who are bad/patient enough to tolerate playing with a gimp whose re-learning a game that he was never very good at to begin with (I might break 90 on a good day).

oh yeah, question: did the much bally-hoo'd Greendale/Jro showdown ever take place? If so, what was the outcome? enquiring minds want to know.

Wow, this is good info as I was considering trying Blue Mash out one day soon. You gotta admit, it's got a great name.....perhaps that's the best thing about it.

My apologies for not holding up my end of this discussion.

Pine: I've never heard of Blue Mash. And I won't traverse the river to play golf (unless the magic incantation is uttered ... you know ... FREE golf.) Sorry the Blue Mash was a disappointment. I can point you in the direction of some similarly bad courses in Virginia. (Even my name sake has its problems).

DaSwami: I'm glad to hear you are giving it a shot. We played once with a guy with one arm (although I hope your recovery makes that analogy inappropriate). My point is that it can be done. As a matter of fact, I was once told by an instructor that you should be able to strike the ball cleanly using either arm by itself (only about 2/3 its normal distance). To compensate, play shorter courses (I can suggest a few) or play from the forward tees.

There are a couple of golfers with one leg that play at Greendale. Eugene, who lost a leg in a motorcyle accident, has overcome his disability remarkably well with some help from an instructor. Eugene is an extraordinarily likeble fellow and is a joy to play with. I think you'll find most recreatioinal golfers to be more concerned about your personality than your golf game. You'll do just fine.

As for breaking 90, that constitutes a good day for me any more. If you need a playing partner some time let me know and I'll see if I can arrange my schedule. (You'd be surprised how busy semi-retirement can be.)

JRo: I haven't spent all of the kids' inheritance yet, so my offer still stands. Let me know if you want to collect on that wager.

Penderbrook: Not my favorite course although the deals are good.

I've been invited this year to play with the local Shriners. They have a group that plays every Tuesday at various nice courses in Virginia. The deal is $40 to play and ride, with lunch usually thrown in. We played Raspberry Falls this week -- an excellent course in Leesburg (as has been discussed before). Earlier this year we played Stoneleigh (out Route 7 to Round Hill). I liked Stoneleigh better than Raspberry Falls particularly in the summer because it has more shade.

We also played Blue Ridge Shadows (way out Route 66 to Front Royal). The Shadows has some spectacular holes (but very little shade) including one tee box off a cliff that at least 50-60 feet high. The cliff comes complete with a waterfall that is visible from most of the back nine. An early fall outing is probably preferable in as musch as the course offers very little shade. And bring a few extra balls.

My duck hook has officially turned into a "gaggle of ducks" hook. I'm considering using my putter off the tee.

I've played a couple times this year, which is better than I've done in recent years. Blue Ridge Shadows was one of them. It's a nice, new course. Played early on an overcast Sunday, so the lack of shade wasn't a big problem, and we had the place to ourselves.

I would be interested in a Wizfans golf outing with daSwami and others. Weekends are iffy the rest of this month, but better in September. Greendale is convenient to me.

The course is not too difficult. The fairways are large so there is plenty of foregiveness off the tee box. However, most of the greens do have hazards surrounding them...either water or sand traps.

I've been playing Goose Creek in Leesburg this year. They got a good deal going where you buy a "Players Card" for $50 and get a free round, so you're basically paying $50 for the round. Every round after that with the Players Card is $34 w/ cart, including weekends. After 3 rounds with the Players Card you get a free greens fee. They've renovated the course and its got a few new holes and is in decent shape. Haven't found a better deal out there yet.

I actually just played that course for the first time about a week ago, really nice. The greens were great and it's wide open. I think I shot about 94 which was good considering it was my second time playing in 8 months.

Laurel Hills is probably my favorite course in this area although Augustine in Stafford is also fantastic.

Unfortunately I spend most of my time at TPC Haines Point (Blue Course) due to the proximity to the house.
