3 More Roster Spots

Post#1 » by Fire BK » Tue Aug 5, 2008 7:47 am

Miller — Lou — Ivey
Iggy — Rush — WG
Thad
Brand — Speights — Evans
Sam — Smith

Clearly, the Sixers are already strapped.... As we know, there will be absolutely nothing left beyond the minimums after Iggy signs..... But we're still looking at 3 open roster spots... And the team could still use depth at SF and C.

Both Rush + Ivey signed for under a million each.... (Rush — $926,678 and Ivey — $854,957) ..... As mentioned elsewhere, we can't expect the next 3 players will even eclipse Ivey's number....

All 3 players will probably sign for around a half-mil, which is the bare bones min..... Therefore, the undrafted rookie crop appears logical.... Who do you like for the back-end of the bench?? Here are some names that have been scattered about:

Calvin Booth — unexciting. Yet seems probable
Kevin Ollie — unlikely w/ Ivey in tow
David Harrison — might command more than min
D. George — Like that name.... might be too expensive too
Jamont Gordon — loved his game in Vegas..... I hope he signs.
Patrick Ewing, Jr. — sounds cool to me
Steve Novak — I'd still like him, even with K. Rush.
Shavlik — Is this Dukie just gone with BK outta office?

Is Justin Williams still available? Marcus Haislip? Danny Ainge made a champion out of Leon Powe.... For low risk, I'm always a proponent of adding athletic, young bodies up front.

Also, I hope trade is still a possibility.....

Yes, I'm looking squarely at you, Willie Green.

Unfortunately, Eddie can't pay an NBA GM to take WG's contract for free...

Maybe we can take a bad contract back in return for WG.... or two players who add up to his 3 yrs/ $11mil.

Unfortunately, I think Willie is in front of Kareem in the rotation. Rush can play the 3 in short increments though, and Iggy will play the 3 as well.

Unfortunately, I agree with you because Mo Cheeks is our coach.... God, I can't watch WG chuck anymore.

Great article about possible candidates for the remaining 3 slots: http://www.hoopsworld.com/Story.asp?story_id=9682

I would love to acquire Bonzi Wells, but I am sure though he might demand more money. George would be also a terrific fit, but, you know, wasn't he the guy who rescinded the Kidd deal at first, in order to earn more money? He is also out of reach for us.

Signing Harrison sounds also right to me. I think he has also in some way a Philly connection, and might be inclined to sign here.

Elton Brown (unrestricted): Elton dominated the Vegas summer league for Denver, and has been one of the top rebounders in both the D-League and overseas for the past two seasons. The kid has tremendous upside, and is not a bad person either, a real steal for a team looking for a proven product.

My choice for the back up 3 would be In this order- Quinton Ross, Kirk Snyder or Bobby Jones. and the a back up center, assuming Theo is healthy, i would go woith theo. if not , go with Calvin Booth. i thought Booth did a great job against Dwight Howard and Garnett last year. Plus he appears to be a great teamate. Your 13th/14th man need either to be great vetern teamate or a very young developing player. It also needs to be someone who can play above average defense oin short spurtsThe sixers are already young enough... no need for some rookie that takes away from the focus of deveeloping guys like young, Spechts , williams.

I would definitely sign Bonzi Wells. Bonzi makes plays.

I would like to sign Elton Brown. He was giving Jason Smith a hard time in the summer league game. I would also add Bonzi Wells.

Wow, this is a great little blurb from the burbs... Thanks for the link:

In other news, Stefanski said he's looking to sign another minimum salary big man with NBA experience, though he declined to give a name.

He also said he still hopes to talk to Miller, who is under contract for $10 million this season, about an extension later this summer. More pressing business — such as signing Brand, as well as free agent guard Royal Ivey and Kareem Rush — has pre-empted those discussions, although the two have text-messaged back and forth.

“His texts are basically saying he's following everything, he's very happy with all the moves so far and he's in the gym working out,” Stefanski said.

This news hits both issues of the day: Remaining roster spots & Miller's status... Good news all around. I'm curious about this mystery big man....

That just doesn't smell like Booth because the generic "NBA experience" tag connotes it's not coming from in-house. Maybe a PJ Brown, Dale Davis-type of player...? Azkrock mentioned Jamaal MacGloire.... He signed as a FA in NJ prior to last season, while Stefanski was still in office.... hmmmm..... makes sense.

Yes, but I believe Magloire played poorly though. Again, I don't know if Ratliff has anything in the tank, but I have always been a huge fan of his, so I would like that.

See how the depth chart looks? thats exactly why Willie Green will be starting on opening night. Thad will be the first guy up off the bench and he'll substitute for Willie. Sorry fellas

There is only one roster spot that the Sixers seem intent on filling at the moment and they are looking for a veteran big man.

I saw that on phillyburbs.com as well. I imagine that they'll go after Booth is he's on the market again or some other dinosaur that won't mind collecting a check while having season tickets on the bench.

I hope not. I hope they get either a veteran presence like Theo Ratliff or Francisco Elson, or take a flier on a young guy with some talent like David Harrison or Earl Barron.

Elton Brown looks intriguing and it can't hurt to have another backup big man brimming with potential and upside. But he doesn't have much "NBA experience" and we already have Speights and Smith which fit that mold, so I'm guessing Brown isn't gonna be a Sixer.

If we're looking for a Calvin Booth type player, I don't really mind who we pick up. They most likely won't see much time and will be used to pick up fouls and such. Any of the veteran names mentioned will do. None seems much better than the next.

I believe Elton Brown is merely 6-9, so he's not a true NBA center. If Sammy is hurt and has to miss any significant portion of time, we should have another big body to plug in other than Smith and Speights, who both need to gain some strength before tussling with NBA centers. Then again, there are so few true, power centers left, it won't be as big a deal as it might have been a few years back. The guy I like the most is David Harrison.
