Jr Smith rumors

Post#1 » by piglet » Mon Aug 4, 2008 7:15 pm

Is Jr. the next McNugget to go? Certainly the rumors involving Cleveland can't be true. Our FO has made some questionable moves or lack thereof. But dumping Jr.? If this pans out, my goodness......

"The Cavs are talking to Denver about restricted free agent J.R. Smith.

The Nuggets have said that they will match any offer sheet Smith signs with another club."

Were just waiting for another teams offer so we can match... He will be a Nugget for atleast one more year, and hopefully the next 6.

The Nuggets know there are like no teams that can offer over what they're willing to pay right now. Basically, they're trying to low-ball him. It could backfire if they piss him off and he takes the qualifying offer, though, which makes me nervous.

Denver really would be the dumbest team in the world if they didn't match a MLE type contract.
much respect to the 2011-2012 champions, Miami Heat, well deserved

About as dumb as the Cavs were when they took on Ben Wallace's contract?

The rumor says the Cavs are talking to Denver about JR. That sounds more like a sign-and-trade deal to me. They know Denver will match anything offered to JR so if they are truly interested in him they will have to work a trade, not just offer him a deal.

Only way I see a deal coming is if it's a 3 team trade. I can't think of any player on the Cav's team (minus King James) thats worth swapping with JR. With Artest off the market I can't even think of a player wanting to be traded that Denver would be interested in.

There are a few decent players that the Nuggets could use, but not sure exactly what type of deal we would be looking at because it definitely wouldn't get the Nuggets the quality starting point guard they desperately need. D West is ok, but I think JR is much more valuable. Anderson Varejao and JJ Hickson I could see us being fairly interested in on that team.

We need to keep JR though. It would be a huge mistake to lose him in any way because his potential is limitless and he is a perfect fit next to Melo and should be for years to come.

Hi Nugget fans,

Cavs fan here. I think you guys could use AV with losing Camby. I dont see D-West as a Star PG for you guys. JR would help us tremendously.

Fantasy idea.

With Atlanta unable to reach terms with Josh Smith, how about a 3 team trade where we use our expirings to land you guys Josh.

I know it would be tricky, being that JR and Josh are both RFAs. Josh wants 13m/yr? (6.5m/trade value), JR would bring something close to 6.5m/yr? (3.25/trade value). If AV was included, Denver would bring in 12.3m/roughly. You guys would have to give up another 9m/almost, what would you give, be fair this gets you Josh Smith and a serviceable PF/C. We would give something like JJ and a guard to Atlanta for Joshs 6.5 and take a bad contract if needed from the Hawks to get them to do this.

Again this is Fantasy idea, just trying to amuse myself this offseason.

i dont get why the Cavs want JR.

they've got Boobie, Delonte West, Pavlovic, and many others who will consistently hit open shots when open.

and they also all play better defense than JR (except from Boobie).

why would they be interested in him?

I can't believe I'm reading this. Did you see any DN game? JR is 10x the scorer Boobie, West or Pavlovic are.

If we dont resign JR, I will absolutely quit on this FO

And if we trade him to Varejao, that's even worse. He's a 0 offensively, he's a 0 in man to man defense, he's just a hustle player (which in his case, hustle means he just seems to be active in the floor and flops way too much, without doing anything else at all) and he's even overrated at that, plus he's earning 6 millions for each of the next two seasons.

mballa, you are incorrect in your assessment of av. he is not very talented offensively- but he is not a zero and has shown improvements offensively. He's like a 2.5 right now. He is certainly not a zero for man to man defense. Most people assume since he plays better help defense that his on the ball sucks- which is incorrect. He is a slightly above average defender man to man. The worst thing about him is his agent.

Joe27- if we were actually able to work a three way like that i'd rather just take josh smith.

eathy- cavs want jr because it would make lebron happy and he could start at sg over those guys.

I certainly don't want to do a three way trade for Josh Smith and AV for JR.

JR is exactly what the Nuggets have needed since Melo has been in Denver. Josh and AV would do 0 for the team's three point shooting.

I don't think there is any offer that can be realistically made for JR, that would make me happy. He is way too important. Plus those who claim he sucks on defense, didn't you see the improvement he was making in that area? He'd most likely be even better now, if the AI trade never happened. He needs more in game experience. But I do remember the Spurs game near the end of the year, JR actually played good D on the flopper.

NNF- If you guys got Josh Smith for JR Smith (which would never happen) and AV you should just take it and run. If you think that JR Smith is better or going to be better than Josh Smith you are insane.

JR is a lot better at scoring then Josh Smith will be.

Nuggets don't need another player with 0 range on the team. Getting Josh Smith would be nice, but not at the expense of JR. It isn't insane. It is insane getting a bunch of players around Melo who can't shoot. Already seen what happens when that team does that, it isn't pretty.

Wasn't it statistically proven that JR and AI/AC were better defensively than AC and AI? JR isn't a horrible defender, but he does tend over play his man and get lost in screens. If he could learn sag off a bit, awareness, and to better pick when to go in for a steal, he'd be a pretty damn good defender. Of course, those are mental things and take time to master.

I'd hate losing JR to the Cavs, but getting West back in return would make me feel somewhat better. JR really would be an awesome fit next to Bron though.

Speaking of JR, my friend interviewed him at Las Vegas and said he's looking a lot thicker, muscle wise. I guess getting pushed around by Kobe lit a fire.

Yeah, JR/AC was a lot better offensively and defensively than AI/AC. Although, Yak/AI was also better than AI/AC in both areas too. Shows how great Karl is.

The 22-year-old Smith is a restricted free agent, but there is no indication that he and the Nuggets are going to part ways anytime soon. In fact, I've been told by a very reliable source that J.R. is not going anywhere and he could re-sign with Denver within the next 7 to 10 days.
