McCarthy 5pm Press conference summary
McCarthy on now. No trade announcement.
MM saying that Favre told him he wasn't committed to playing for Green Bay to the level MM wanted to hear from him. Both sides evaluating options now.

Re: McCarthy Press conference 5pm
MM said long productive discussions.....wanted to know where Brett's mind was at......had long personal discussion. Said the conversation never got to the point where Favre's mindset was ready to even talk about his role. Said Favre not at the right mindset to even talk about his role.
Said Favre needs to jump on the train and go......told Favre he's one of 80 guys on the roster and the team needs to move forward.
Acknowledges the personal nature of their conversations....almost sounds like they spent five hours just rehashing the old battles of the past year.
MM said he asked Favre "are you ready to be the guy Thursday night, in the QB office, watching the films for the upcoming game"
Media questions trying to get MM to stumble and reveal something but MM isn't budging. MM also said he can't comment on any trade talks.

Sounds like it wasn't too productive of a conversation.

Re: McCarthy 5pm Press conference summary
Ok...here's the new news nugget prompted by a good reporter's question.
McCarthy said Favre doesn't want to play in Green Bay but said that Favre definitely wants to play in the NFL this season.
The more you listen to this conference, you get the impression Favre just wanted to have a bitch session to McCarthy, then they agree that he'll not play here this season.

Re: McCarthy 5pm Press conference summary
Did McCarthy say that he told Favre he wouldn't open up the competition for starting QB unless Favre told him he was committed to playing for the Packers first regardless of role?
That's what I caught. Did other people catch that as well? Or do other people interpret that differently?

I'd have to re-listen to that. I agree it was a bit muddy. MM did seem to say he told Brett that Aaron was the starter. But then MM seemed to indicate that if Favre said his mind was right for Green Bay, he'd be able to compete for the job.

McCarthy said He would open the competition up, and "it would be a hell of a battle." But Favre was not in mindset to play right now.

No...McCarthy said it never got to the point of an open competition because the first question was to find out if Favre was mentally ready to play for the Packers and he did not say he wanted to, basically said he doesn't think he can play in GB. MM later went on to say that every man on the 80 man roster competes for a starting job.

Re: McCarthy 5pm Press conference summary
I'm sure a hangup could have been Favre's timeline of commitment...1...2...maybe 3 years (or months)?
Maybe he wanted to commit year by year and McCarthy said no and that is why talks never proceeded to the QB competition. Really sounds like they weren't on the same page regarding that.
I hate this speculation...it's all fodder...lets just broadcast these meetings.

Maybe.
I got the impression that Favre wanted McCarthy to welcome him back, and tell him that there was an open competition for the starting QB spot, at which point Favre was planning on then (and only then) saying he was completely committed to playing for the Packers this season.
McCarthy, however, wanted FIRST for Favre to commit to the team regardless of the role, before McCarthy would talk about opening up the competition.
Favre wouldn't do it, meaning he wasn't prepared to take the chance that there MIGHT not be an open competition, meaning there would be the possibility of him being Rodgers backup this season.
That's what I'm getting so far.

Yeah, I didn't mean to include "told Favre" in that above part. I meant to say this:
"Did McCarthy say (in this press conference) he wouldn't open up the competition for starting QB unless Favre told him he was committed to playing for the Packers first regardless of role?"

I think that sounds about right. MM needed Favre to say the words that showed he was committed to this team and he never heard those words. It sure sounds like Favre is bitter and angry and can't move on. MM keeps saying Favre emotional and has a lot going on mentally. MM won't spill the beans on Favre and it will be interesting to hear what Favre has to say.

I disagree 100%...I think Favre does NOT want to play for the Packers, that was basically the first question. The rest of the talks were bucket dumping and heeling.

Re: McCarthy 5pm Press conference summary
I think you heard in that press conference what you wanted to hear, depending on who you support in the dispute:
Pro-Organization: MM basically sat and listened to Favre whine and bitch and tell them that he really didn't want to play in Green Bay
Pro-Favre: MM didn't embrace Favre or give him any hope that there would be a fair competition for the starting job.

Who is the moron (not Schefter) on NFL Network right now? The guy who asked about Favre being fined...this guy sounds like Favre junior.

Yes, this is the impression I was getting.

I certainly didn't hear what I wanted to hear.
I am definitely "pro-Favre" but I think InsideOut heard the same things I did, even though IIRC he and I do not share many of the same opinions on this whole situation.
My post wasn't really subjective, as you can certainly infer what InsideOut did about it being an indicator of Favre being emotional (to a point where that is a negative).
I didn't even say whether I believed McCarthy or Favre were right or wrong in that situation, just that according to McCarthy, Favre wanted to hear something specific before committing, and McCarthy wanted the commitment before telling Favre what Favre wanted to hear.
I imagine there will be disagreement about whether either side should have approached it that way, but that is what I heard from McCarthy.

Yeah Favre definitely knew he would be in a competition for the starting job but McCarthy wanted to know if Favre even wanted to commit to playing for the Pack. Straight from Favre's mouth:
"Mike told me, hey, we're a better team with you on it but wanted to know if I have a problem with an open competition," Favre said. "I don't have a problem with competing -- you know that, but Aaron should be the starter right now because he's been out here all this time. This is more than about an open competition and I can do that, absolutely, but this is going to be mass confusion and that's not good for this team."
