All-Time Lakers

Post#1 » by BillyHoyle » Wed Aug 6, 2008 5:13 pm

if you could select an All-Time Lakers starting 5, (don't focus only on numbers but on "team-chemistry" as well), how would it look like?

sure, but what I would like to see are disscusions maybe about starting coop next to magic instead of kobe or something.
ps: i like the idea of playing twin towers with kareem and chamberlain.

PG - Magic
SG - Kobe
SF - Worthy
PF - Wilt
C - Kareem

This has it all on offense and defense

I also like the twin tower

edit - This also might be the biggest starting 5 of all time

I think it's a little cheap putting Wilt at the 4, that's too easy. Who is the best true PF in Laker history? It can't be Rambis, so who is it?

1. Magic
2. Bryant
3. Worthy
4. PF
5. KAJ

If that was the case I'd have Elgin in there at the 3 and move Worthy to the 4. So who's the best PF in Laker history?

Thats the problem, I couldnt think of a great Laker PF that was on the level of the rest of the 5

well I guess

Magic
Bryant
Worthy
Gasol
KAJ

That team would have some sick ball movement

Why would anyone want to do that?

That's lame putting Glove/Mailman...even though you put the asterisk, the Glove sucked as a Laker.

Also, I wasn't around so I don't know...but I've heard that when we got Wilt, he was already well past his prime. If anyone could shed some light on that (pref. someone who actually was watching the Lakers back then).

I think he had one very good season as a Laker and he played with a fractured hand IIRC in the finals and then he was more subduded into a role player.

If each team was able to assemble their all-time greats from their respective teams, which team would come out on top?

I just can not put 5 on the board. So many great players and we are leaving out so many who should be in the top 5 or 10. I do like the list of players posted. Magic. Kareem. Worthy. Kobe. Shaq.

See I just left out Jerry West. And so many others. Just so hard.

Wasn't even born back then, but here goes:

We got Wilt at the age of 32 and he played here until he was 36 (5 seasons). One of the seasons he was hurt (something very rare for him) and only played 12 games. The 4 others he led the league in rebounding and also won a Finals MVP during that stretch. Led the league in FG% twice (including a 72.7% season). Averaged over 4 apg all seasons. Averaged over 20 ppg twice (and 27 ppg the season he was hurt). Also averaged over 20 rebounds per game in all 5 seasons in the playoffs. 2 defensive 1st teams.

So yeah, he was past his prime but still a very, very good player. Excellent defender, best rebounder in the league, great passer, super-efficient from the floor. Only thing "lacking" was his volume scoring, but he played on talented Laker teams who valued his defense, rebounding and passing more.

Here is his player profile page for anyone interested:
