LUKE23 wrote:The Bulls analogy doesn't really hold much water. For one, building a team in the NBA is much different than building a team in the NFL. Secondly, that Bulls team lost their entire core of guys, for no compensation, through essentially no fault of the players. They also lost their HOF head coach.

In the Packers situation, they lose one player, not all of their core, and the player was at least partially, if not predominantly at fault for the breakup. Their coach is back and they have a player that has learned under said lost player for three years.

It's just not a very comparable situation.

we are not looking at it the same. The situation has to do with what caused the HOF player to leave.

what actions were taken by the FO to bring their era with the team to an end.

They are exactly the same.

The only difference is that Jordan didn't have a contract with the Bulls any longer, or we might have seen an issue like we had in GB.

MajorDad wrote:mnstinks- you don't sound like you know anything about the NFL market or business. if the packers have a down year, outside local businesses will suffer. fewer products will be sold. favre jerseys will definitely not be the "item" anymore. The poster never said he didn't prepare for a reduced sales this year. if you see a down market ahead, do you keep your wall street stocks and lose 33% or do you switch to the safer government bonds and only make 3% profit? Most businessman plan for the worst and are pleasantly surprised when their profits exceed their goals. So mnstinks, would you be willing to buy my coldstone ice cream franchise?

loking on the bright side, if the jets make the play-offs and the packers don't, ted thompson, mcCarthy and rogers will all be gone and the new era of brohm will begin. I wonder with the packers so far under the cap, if the packers get off to a slow start, how many panic signings/trades thompson will make to keep his job?

another thing. Rogers is not a rookie. This is his 4th year. This is not his firs camp. this is not the NBA. Players are expected to perform at a starter level their second year whether they started the previous year or not. the average NFL player only plays 4 years. So I don't want to read people trying to make excuses or him and saying he's a project and that he needs time to develop. if he still needs time to develop, then the packers' coaching staff has done a very bad job of training him the past 3 years. When i see rookie QB's producing big numbers, i would think a 4th year QB should be better. if rogers can't match what Drew brees put up in his first year as a starter, i'll be extrememly disapointed- not in rogers, but in thompson and Mc Carthy.

Favre and many people said the packers overachieved last year. their schedule is a lot tougher this year, and their defensive line is not as strong. Will the Packers be as good as last year? Doubtful. Will they make the play-offs? probable. if they don't, i expect a lot of heads will roll and a lot of job vacancy announcements to be posted in green Bay.

I have to agree with Luke. Favre's accuracy- especially on the long pass was terrible the last 4 years. Favre made his money on hitting the short routes and having receivers who could gain yardage after the catch. one positive factor for rogers is he will not have to worry about having ferguson as one of his receivers. I hate to say it, but if the packers don't beat the Vikings in week one, it will be a long year for rogers, Thompson and MC Carthy. You know Madden will be second guessing thompson the entire game and adding what if favre had played this game. if the packers lose tha t game, the press wil l only get worse. A lot of packers fans didn't like Thompson before this year. And as a Fox announcer said, why is thompson making mc carthy do all the press conferences and answer all the questions? Why isn't the guy who made the decision answering to the press?

Thompson's legacy = the guy who traded Favre and 0 superbowls.

No crap kidding sales will suffer if the Packers have a down year (years)...

I guess you missed my point. What was he going to bitch about when Favre left after this year (if he joined the Packers). In other words, would he blame his bad sales on Packers management when Favre retired again.

He said "the local busiesses are all NOW expecting a down season." He wasn't expecting that all a long when Favre retired?

Seattle didn't go to the superbowl on Thompson's watch. they made adjustments after he left. Does tony Dungy get any credit for tmapa bay winning the super bowl after he left? NO! John gruden gets the credit for taking Dungy's team and motivating them to accomplish more. So, I give 0 (zero) credit to thompson for Seattle's failures and success after he left.

if this was brewerfan, i'm quite sure we'd have at least 15 posters who would post links to performances and stats by rookie, second year and first year starter QBs. if rogers can't match the numbers put up by guys like brees, brady, Palmer, Rivers, Romo and Eli manning in their first year as starters, I'm quite certain packer fans will be calling for his head and booing him profusely. Not because Rogers is bad, but rather because of what the packers could have kept. if rogers can't throw for 3,500 yards and 20 tds with the weapons he's been provided, then he isn't deserving of being a starting QB for the packers.

An honest question will be how much of an opportunity will Rogers be given before the packers switch to brohm or sign an old guy like Orton, griese, or pennington or Simms or Carr? Will the 2008 packers be like the 2007 bears with a revolving door at QB?

Rogers deserves his chance. i doubt he will be given a fair shot. it's not his fault. Just look at all the other QBs who followed a legend. Scott hunter turned out well. Who's the QB who followed Elway, Unitus, and marino?

I feel AR deserves the same chance but AR was given more time on the bench so I'll adjust that to 1.5 years. I also want to say great job TT. And what did TT do with the advantage...trade him to the team we all agreed would be the best solution for the Packers. I feel bad for the few who are bound and determined to keep a bad attitude and hope Favre does better than the Packers. Must suck to go into a new season with that kind of mindset.
I disagree with you. In the beginning Brett was on a pretty bad team. AR has the same cast that went to the NFC Title game last year. If Packer finish 8-8 or less AR will be run out of town.

The Packers are very important, and I am sorry that I feel Brett gave them a better shot to win, which in turn with effect my business, and my bottom line.

Don't talk about what you don't know.

Okay, okay, trust me I do understand.

My point is that BRETT FAVRE would not have been the quarterback FOREVER. So, at some point you would have had to deal with that, that's all.

I wasn't trying to get into a pissing match. (Other than you blaming Packer management through out the whole thread).

I hope you business is successful this year and going forward.

Sorry man, but it's just not the same at all. In the Bulls case, you didn't have an indecisive star player at the head of everything. Favre is the one who retired, Favre is the one who cancelled the meeting in late March. He was steering the organization in different directions. I'm sorry, but if you blame TT more than Favre in this scenario you are not looking at it objectively.

They let Favre RETIRE, then say he wanted to come back and they were open to that too. Yet he still changes his mind again. How in God's name is that the organization's fault.

I realize you're emotional because you have direct ties to how all this goes down, and I understand that, but I believe it is clouding your judgment on this issue. Favre shares a ton of the blame for this breakup, if not the majority of it.

Yes, Seattle did go to the SB with TT's roster. He built it. The fact that he wasn't actually employed there at the time is irrelevant. He built that team. Sorry Reed.

Well, this is very bittersweet. It's great that we're getting something in return, and that this saga is all over, but it's hard to see Brett in another uniform, and I wanted to see Brett retire as a Packer. I will always be a Brett Favre fan, and he will never be forgotten.

I'm not expecting a 13-3 season, but we should still make the playoffs. The Vikings will give us a hard time for the division, but then there are the two wild card seeds. We're loaded at WR, we have a very good backfield, and our O-Line is still solid. At QB, we should give Rodgers all of our support, and hope he plays well. The defense is still solid as well, although the D-Line might be of some concern.

Am I the only one who thinks this team is stronger than 2 months ago?
Rodgers went through the toughest criticism (i hope) while still in camp. All the attention is now on the Jets. Favre wont be home to think we can convince him to unretire. Grant is locked up and from an outsiders point of view it looks like MM came out strong by sticking to his convictions all along.
and for gravy, we get a ~3rd round pick for dealing with all of this

I feel bad for rogers. nothing he will do will ever be good enough to satisfy packer fans who will be saying for the next 10 years, "what if" what if we had brought back favre for one last harrah tour.

favre coming back is rememnding me of all those NBA players who announced at the begining of the season that this will be their last year. and then they go to each game and get some special present from the visiting team they play. and as the year progressed, the presents kept getting bigger and bigger until the final present was given. Did the lakers or Wizards win anything in kareem and Jordan's last year? i remember kareem getting a harley, but i forgot what his team accomplishments were.

Is this the same thing as Malone playing one last year with the lakers? or billl Walton joining the Celtics to get a ring?

the more i read, the more it looks like favre wants a fairwell tour. Well, he'll definitely get one with the new York media.

Your "bright side" is the Packers missing the playoffs and turmoil in the front office?! Are you sure you're a Packer fan?

I believe that Kareem went to, and won the finals in his last year? 1987? If it was 86 they lost to the Celtics in the finals I believe.

I could look it up, but right now I am lazy, and will see just how correct my memory on 1980's basketball really is!

Neusch, I dont he was disregarding the team's impact on your business but rather the impact of the FO on your business. I dont think you should worry and assume the worse (granted you should be be conservative with your estimates). I do think you are overreacting about this team's chances. This team is still the favorites in the Central (ok a few have the Queens but being a GB fan I cant accept that)

yes, the avatar is the picture of the guy who shot the lawn-mower - a typical Milwaukee drunk packers / brewers / bucks fan. perhaps next week I'll have the guy who called in 911 complaining that his subway spicey itlalion sandwich didn't have any sauce, and then called 911 again complaining about the police not responding fast enough. yes, these people do exist. They're called ugly americans. thus the avatar.

I'm sorry luke, but after you leave an organization, you no longer get credit for that organization's accomplishments or failures. how much credit does Dean Taylor get for drafting the majority of the current brewers? Zero! how much credit does parcels get for last year's success of the cowboys? Zero! how much credit does kiki get for building the current nuggets? ZERO! how much credit/blame did Weis give his notre dame predecessor? how much credit is hope going t o give tiller? Zero! After you left the bucks, did ticket sales go up or down? Did they blame you or give you credit the following year? No! is obama going to give bush any credit for anything he did? NO! how much blame will be given to Dave's death for Wendy's demise? Or to Auggie busch when his sons sold budweiser? Will michigan's new football coach give credit to Carr for his football team this year? NO. Did Alverez' successor give Alverez credit for his team? NO. it's theri team and their problems and achievements.

How much credit is mickey davis going to take for the bucks' success this year? None. he'll give it all to PP.

You don't get credit for things you didn't acomplish. you also cannot take credit for things that happened after you left. I moved from Beardstown to Carterville this year. The cub scout pack I left behind in Beardstown folded. it was a quality award unit the previous year under my watch. Was it my fault they folded after i left? No, it wasn't. I'm not going to take the blame. Another cub scout pack i was a leader of received a quality unit award the year after I left with the boys I recruited and the leaders I trained. Will I take the credit for their success? No, I won't. it's their moment.

If my high school or college wins a championship, that's nice, but i'm not going to try to claim that as part of my accomplishments. Luke, if madison memorial won a state championship the year after you left, would you want to take credit for that because you helped train and mentored the players on that team? Are yo u going to take credit for your brother's accomplishments? i doubt it. i would hope your answer would be no. You can be proud of them. Was Memorial better or worse after you and your brother left? the fact is it doesn't matter. Your accomplishments stand on your own merit. After you leave, it's somebody else's team. After thompson left Seattle , it was somebody elses' team - for better and worse.

thompson didn't go to the Super bowl on his watch as the seattle GM. he can't take credit for their success the following year. if thompson was so great in Seattle, why didn't he stay there? obviously, they saw somebody better. The main thing Thompson has done for green bay is he made a lot of profit by unloading a lot of veteran contracts. Arther Anderson would be so proud(if not for that little enron problem) the packers are now what Wendy Selig would say " financially flexible".

Pretty bad team?! Where are you getting those facts? They were 9-7 his first three seasons. How is 9-7 a pretty bad team? Many seasons 9-7 makes you a playoff team.

Could someone explain to me why people want to see AR and TT fail? I just don't get it. Why don't people want to support and cheer for these guys? TT was hired to build a winning team. So he built a young under the cap team that looks to have a bright future. Last season the team went farther than it had been in 10 years. Why is the guy hated for this? We have the NF exec of the year running our team and he's more hated than Larry Harris and Herb Kohl were. AR was drafted to sit on the bench and keep his mouth shut for as long as Favre wanted to play QB in GB. Favre decided he no longer wanted to play in GB so now AR gets his chance after 3yrs of keeping his mouth shut and doing what he was asked. And for that we have people hating on him and he hasn't even started his first game yet. This board just sucks. Every time I sign on I leave feeling depressed instead of excited about the Packers. That's tough to do when your're 13-3 and picked as a playoff team this year. The season hasn't even started yet we have people whining about every little thing. You guys have sucked all the fun out of it. Some of the best advice I ever got was don't hang out with negative whiners or they'll just bring you down. Hang out with positive people and they'll lift you up and make you feel good. Man if that isn't the truth. If this was the Buck's board I could understand the negativity. Sucking for 16 out of 17 seasons will bring anyone down but whining about a 13-3 team run by the exec of the year and coached by the runner up coach of the year is pathetic. I'm done with you sad sacks. I'm sure I won't have a hard time finding a board where I won't have to read how people hope Favre joins Tampa and kills our D while AR sucks. And the sad part it's only going to get worse. The same whiners are going to be on here glowing every time Favre has a good game and ripping AR every chance they get. Like reading that for the next 6 months would be fun anyway.

This sounds like the management has been trying to basically hold back from saying that Brett wanted to play for Minnesota and not GB the whole time.
