Chad Pennington signs w/ Dolphins

Post#1 » by magicfan4life05 » Thu Aug 7, 2008 10:48 am

He was cut to free up 6 million in cap space for the Jets because of the Favre trade.

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/footb ... favre.html

The dramatic trade signals the end of Chad Pennington's eight-year run with the Jets. The longtime starter, who was supposed to battle Kellen Clemens this summer for the starting job, will be released Thursday, GM Mike Tannenbaum indicated early Thursday morning. Coach Eric Mangini told Pennington Wednesday night that he will be cut. Clemens will serve as Favre's backup.

We all know he's a Parcells guy, he was the QB he Drafted aferall. Even last season, I specifically remember on ESPN, Parcells was defending Pennington when he was struggling last season and getting criticized in the media before Clemens took over.

So would you be in favor of this move and do you think it'll happen?

Being back in the division, and facing his old team, Pennington might want to take our his anger on them 2 X a year :D
Dwight Howard on his FT struggles:

"I just think everybody needs to stop talking about it," Howard said. "There's more to life than free throws."

I think Chad will get better options, mainly to be a backup maybe for the Cowboys, or go to the Vikes or Bears and eventually challenge to start

however, maybe he'd want the chance to face the Jets 2x a year, Tuna did draft him

He has an injury history that is a concern and with our "new" offensive line, that could not bode well for him here. He would definitely start over the guys we have if healthy, but probably wouldn't make if far into the season, so your #2 would be just as important.

I would love for Chad Pennington to be here. He would be better than any of the other QB's we have right now and we could win more than 4 games this year! He'd no doubt be the starter, he's stable, effective, and a safe pick for this team. Chad can be very accurate too, i've always liked the guy, and don't know why he gets such a bad rap in the NFL. I hope we get him.

Unfortunately, I would welcome Pennington. Even though it'd be like having to witness the Fiedler offense all over again, that's still a better prospect than a McCown one.
For a long time it gave me nightmares, witnessing an injustice like that. It’s a constant reminder of just how unfair this world can be.I can still hear them taunting him, Silly Rabbit tricks are for kids.I mean why couldn’t they just give him some cereal?

No to Chad, his arm strenght is horrible. Ted Ginn's game will suffer. The guys already 32 and never really showed me anything special. I would rather see Beck or McCown then him.

Come on, how is Josh McCown ( 71.6 career QB rating) better for any receiver than Chad Pennington (88.9 career rating)?

Didn't Santana Moss produce with Pennington? Laveraneus Coles? Cotchery? All with 1000+ yard seasons. And from what I've read, they all love the guy.

What WR loves Josh McCown? Whose careers has he launched? What WRs has he pumped out 1000+ yard seasons for? Not to mention that Pennington ...

- is 7-1 against the Phins career
- has led mediocre teams to the playoffs 3 times
- is just a couple years older than McCown, who at 29 has yet to show he can hold a #2 job
- has the inside scoop on every formation, scheme, and play of our Week 1 and Week 17 opponent

It's obvious who the better QB is, by far. But I guess we'll have to wait and see.

It's got to be Beck who's gone.

But let's not ignore what this signing does for the team. We now have the potential for a very strong ball control offense. Pennington is a smart, accurate QB. Factor in our offensive line and our running backs, and we might be able to actually keep our defense off the field. Judging by the personnel we have on the defensive side of the ball, that's probably not an awful thing.

This signing just bought us a few wins...

If Icness' source about Beck getting cut is correct, then I think both McCown and Beck are gone by the start of the season. Pennington starts, Henne is the backup, and some old veteran is brought in, I forgot some of the names Icness mentioned as replacements for when Beck was cut.

Pennington is the most accurate QB in NFL history(all-time) 65.5% completion. He has taken the Jets to the playoffs 3/8 seasons and 32 is not really old for a QB.

His arm strength is below average, but he is very intelligent, does not turn the ball over(very important for us), he is a real leader and has a ton more good qualities than bad.

I am very happy we picked this guy up, Mcnown is trash, I'd rather Chad teach Henne and show our other Qbs how a true leader acts and plays.

Good pick up for u guys. Longtime jet fans here btw. I wish we could of kept him but we didn't have any space for him. Chad is a great qb if ur line is good n u got a run game. Very accurate...great decision making ability. Yes ppl knock his arm strength but his arm is underrated. He's got a average arm not below average. He can air some out. Anyway he's a great guy and im glad he found a place to play so quickly.

notes from Pro Football Weekly

Just as Brett Favre’s arrival in New York spelled the end of Chad Pennington’s tenure in the Big Apple, Pennington’s recent signing with the Dolphins is likely to end second-year QB John Beck’s brief stay in Miami. “They’re going to give John two more weeks to show what he can do, but if he continues his awful play, he’s out of here,” a team insider told PFW. “He’s been terrible throughout camp, and there’s no way four quarterbacks are going to make the final roster. He’s not one of (executive VP of football operations Bill) Parcells’ guys, and they have no loyalty to him.” In addition to Pennington and Beck, the Dolphins also have free-agent acquisition Josh McCown and rookie Chad Henne at the position. While Pennington is all but guaranteed the starting job, the reported two-year, $11.5 million contract he signed is anything but guaranteed. According to the insider, those figures are significantly inflated, meaning he’ll approach the $11.5 million only if he meets a multitude of performance-based escalators.

The Dolphins’ WR corps is suffering from a bad case of the drops. Coach Tony Sparano gave them an earful after a recent practice, and as a coach who stresses the fundamentals, Sparano has been visibly agitated. One of the most disappointing receivers has been free-agent acquisition Ernest Wilford, who has been indefinitely demoted to the second team, with Derek Hagan taking his starting spot.

I'm happy about the signing. Pennington has proven to be a very accurate QB in the past and while he's not known for superb arm strength he does get the job done very efficiently and our WR core will be a lot better off with him throwing to them instead of the likes of John Beck or Josh McCown. This is an upgrade for our team and i'm looking forward to watching us compete this year instead of going through another miserable season of 1-15.

Things look bad for Wilford. Derek "Butter hands" Hagan is starting ahead of him.
