Re: Preseason Thread
This is the first time ever I'm actually looking forward to preseason. Really interested in seeing some of the young backups on our squad who should be replacing quite a few vets this season or in the coming seasons.

I'll be at the Lions-Giants game tonight and I'll watch the Bears game once I get back home. I'm so pumped to have football again!
It's not whether you win or lose, it's how good you look playing the game

I want some inside Giants information tomorrow, Ic. You know how upset I get when you always have Cowboys info for Stud, but nothing for me.

Icness you mentioned being on a Richmond radio station. When is that and on what station. I'm actually moving to the Richmond for this year so I might be able to catch your show.
and where is my insider info

Wow that Robert Meachem TD was like the one he had against Cal when he was a Vol

Robert Meachem was impressive tonight, seems like all the things they are saying of him out of training camp are true. He should easily have a breakout season.

Yeah, that's bad.
It is "could be". Nothing is certain. Although it still looks bad.

Re: Preseason Thread
Giants/Lions notes:
Lions:
Gosder Cherilus had a rough start, looked like he was thinking too hard and kinda nervous. Had one holding penalty and did not handle the around the edge rush well. Got a bum rap on the late false start though.
OMG we have a TE and we actually threw passes and had designed routes for them. Michael Gaines looked real active and caught the ball with his hands.
1st team OL played almost the entire game, which is not a good sign for down the road. George Foster looked better but Osi didn't look like he was trying too hard. Raiola got no push most run plays.
Kevin Smith met expectations, runs real hard and keeps his head up. Made a real nice blitz pickup too.
Calvin Johnson absolutely dominated in his short time. Made a great catch on a bad throw. Looked like a giant compared to the defenders and he got behind the safeties with little trouble.
Jared Devries looked great dropping into coverage. Nice wrinkle in the defense--both times Devries dropped, Eli very nearly threw the ball right to him.
Dan Orlovsky showed newfound accuracy and much better mechanics. He's far and away ahead of Drew Stanton.
Stanton reminded me of Vince Young, and not in the positive Young traits. He makes his first read and if it's not there, he either takes off or blindly flings it to option #2 route. Has no feel for the coverage at all. Throws every ball as hard as he can, not real accurate.
Youngsters who stood out in 2nd half:
Leon Joe was everywhere, making plays and reading the offense well
Andre Fluellen consistently beat his man and he showd he knows how to finish his sacks
Ramzee Robinson has markedly improved enough to be a legit 4th CB. Too bad he's the size of a 6th grader.
Buster Davis moved well and covered the TE nicely, the only Lion LB to do that all night
Giants:
Standout of the night was Kenny Phillips, who looked awesome. Great closing speed and he wraps on his hits. Looked like a 5-year vet.
...which is good because when he wasn't in the game the Giant safeties were consistently awful. Lions first drive at least one safety was nowhere near where he was supposed to be on every play, most often both were lost. Some of it was that the Lions 1st team offense was clicking. The corners (mainly Ross) were too quick to turn the receivers loose to the safeties too. When the DL doesn't get to the QB the back 7 were often lousy against the pass.
Robbins looked great on the DL. Manhandled blockers on almost every run.
Domenik Hixon looked great, got open nicely and showed some hands. He's got to be the slowest PR in the league though.
Kevin Boss made a great play when he made a catch, got absolutely slammed but shook it off and gained a few more yards. He's gonna be a good one real soon, has a lot of K2 in his game.
They finally found themselves a backup QB in Anthony Wright. He wasn't perfect but he showed poise and a better arm than I thought he had. David Carr needs to give it up. He has an uncanny knack for finding the one defender who beats the blocking and getting smacked.
Youngsters who looked good/bad late:
Chase Blackburn played a real sound game. Did a great job avoiding the wash and making solid tackles.
Dave Tollefson isn't young but he played well.
Brandon London uses his size well and it looked like he ran nice routes. Blocked hard too and blew up his blocker on a punt coverage--he'll be tough to cut.
Guy Whimper was the proverbial rented mule. When you are an OL and your first move on every snap is to stand straight up, you're not going to last long in the NFL.
Crafonso Thorpe should be a no-brainer cut.

Re: Preseason Thread
Its great to hear Kenny Phillips is already panning out, I'm hoping the young secondary can mesh quickly, even if it does take a month or so.
Since I didn't get a chance to see the game, all I saw were the highlights/box score, and saw that Wright played well, but thought it was product of it being the preseason. I did see that Carr played well, as well, but is he really done?
