OT: The Olympics
What events (if any) are you guys and gal likely to check out? I've never been overly into it, but there are a few things I usually catch.
If it's on TV I'll probably keep an eye on:
- USA Baseball if they're in a medal round
- Basketball if they're in the championship game
- Beach volleyball if it's Kerr and May
- Softball if Finch is pitching
Will probably watch every minute
- USA Women's soccer if they end up in the championship game
- Phelps if he's swimming while I'm flipping channels
- Men's 100 meter, 400 meter hurdles, long jump, 4 x 100 for the medals
- Women's gymnastics. I probably won't miss much of that.

Re: OT: The Olympics
Honestly, I'll watch pretty much anything involving USA if I'm around the house. Last night I watched the first half of men's soccer vs Japan. The only one I'll go out of my way to watch though is hoops.
I wonder: what makes swimming so awesome that they can have eight events that a guy can win? Why aren't there eight basketball events for Lebron to enter? They could have 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, 4v4, 5v5, 21, horse, dunk contest, play station skills challenge, etc.

Re: OT: The Olympics
Phelps & Mens/Womens Basketball I'll watch as much as I can of. I'll probably check out some track and field events if possible. I work at night so during the day there's a lot of random stuff on that I'll probably watch just because there's nothing else on.
FYI, they have HD cameras in the bullseyes in archery. Now that should be cool.

Re: OT: The Olympics
All of the swimming finals (32 I believe) are scheduled for the morning in China so they are live in primetime here. There is so much filler though in primetime that I will generally record from 7-10 and then spend 30-45 minutes before I go to bed zipping through it and watching the good stuff.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

Our Mens Soccer team is actually capable this year. We finally have international level talent, and this Olympics could be our team's coming out party.

Re: OT: The Olympics
I watch virtually any sport. Going to watch the Road Race this morning unless its postpone because of the smog and then whatever on Channel 7 or SBS.
It's a bit annoying that the swimming finals have been shifted from the evening to the mornings. Anyway expect Australia to dominate in the pool

The Marathon.....I love watching Frank Shorter come out of nowhere at mile 17......
Remember during the Athens Marathon in 2004 when that crazy guy came out and started tackling the runners? (I think it was the leader at the time)

Obviously I'm going to watch basketball. Also going to watch baseball (LaPorta on team USA and Lawrie on team Canada), handball, water polo, softball (
), swimming and diving, table tennis and of course, rhythmic gymnastics.

Re: OT: The Olympics
my good buddy Matt Targett is swimming in the 100m free...he's from Australia and facebooked me today saying he was dropping off his laundry today in the olympic village and who was there dropping off his laundry but Andrew Bogut...he knows I love Bogut so he talked to him a little bit and said he was a nice guy, etc...back to my friend Matt...I'm fairly certain he's racing against Michael Phelps, so he's going to get owned, but if he beats him and wrecks his quest for 8 gold medals, he'll be all over the news so keep your eye out for him.

Re: OT: The Olympics
Anyone watching the opening ceremony? That thing with 2008 drummers blows my mind. I can't even fathom how they would have rehearsed that. This thing is so lavish it's insane.

Did NBC not even show the opening ceremony live? How poor.

Why would they show it live? It would've had to start at 6 in the morning. People aren't going to wake up early for that and they're not going to miss work for it either.

Re: OT: The Olympics
Also I know there has been some grumbles about NBC demanding the swimming finals be to the morning. Which is lame. Swimming finals should be at night. Heats in the morning, finals at night.

Why not. Anyway, while the US labours through the overun ceremony (which I believe is 3 and a bit hours, unless you just get the happy snaps). In Australia, about to go to live competition coverage in a few minutes. And straight to live Basketball - Opals vs Belarus.
