DEFENSIVE SG or OFFENSIVE SG??

Post#1 » by chrisjacob » Sat Aug 9, 2008 2:00 am

we really need a SG..but what kind of SG??? i think mavs need a defensive SG because allmost all of the leading scores are SG, if mavs can locked down a SG it would be perfect.. :o

If we had a SF who was dependable as a #2 offensive option or a defensive stopper, it would make that question much easier to answer. As it stands, we have a guy who isn't either.

Isn't it sad that it has come to a point where the fate of this team rides on Gerald Green's shoulders?

I've said this all along, if it's an offensive SG, then Jason Terry is just fine. If it's a defensive SG, that's a different situation, but we often have trouble scoring as it is, we need a better bench, the only really effective bench player other than JET if you want to count him that we had was Bass.

who would have thought it in 2006?!
I think we still need a 2 capable of playing both sides of the ball. that changes if for example someone like shawn marion starts at the 3. in that case we could afford a mainly offensive sg to start for us

Antoine Wright might get the starting position and he impressed me last season. Green has good shooting ability though and if we get any of these guys on track at the 3 enough to move Howard to the 2 then that also fixes things (RAT, Singleton, Bass, Rhodes-has 3 point ability) We only have to hit on one out of 6 to improve this team dramatically. The 2 is our only weakness. Terry behind Kidd is strong, Bass behind Dirk is strong and if we resign Fazekas that would be strong as well. Dampier and Diop = solid. Howard at the 3 works but we need another wing to step it up.

Really with Bass already a proven commodity we only need to find 1 stud out of these 5 guys: Rhodes RAT Green Wright and Singleton.
Rhodes RAT and Singleton at SF works for me even if Bass can only be effective at the 4.
Green and Wright splitting time at the 2 works as well Plus Howard can play both positions. Wright seemed to play D very well last season.

I have a feeling that Stack will be the starting SG this season and if that is the case, we are doomed.

We have discussed various trades that include Howard or Bass/Stack to upgrade talent at the SG, but what about trading Howard for 2 players of lesser talent?

Something like Howard for Jackson/Azibueke.

I'm not saying that necessarily has to be the deal, but it wouldn't bother me if we traded Howard for a small downgrade at SF with a young SG with good potential. Those were the only 2 that I could think of but there are probably more.

Yeah, I know what you mean.

Actually, AW might be a key as well. If he can become starting material and take his game to another level or 2 (like a Granger), it would allow us to consider pulling the trigger on a Howard for VC deal if it is available around TDL. Even if it we don't make a trade, it would allow us to move Howard to the SG position.

Either way, it is becoming obvious that Green and/or AW's development/progress are going to be critical to the team this season.

What is everyone seeing in Wright to say he's going to be more than a role player? I think he'll get some minutes behind Howard with Stack/Green at SG, but I really am not counting on him to do anything more than George did- Spot minutes with a solid game every once in a while.

I think Green is our sole hope. He has the shooting ability already and his freak athleticism will be great with Kidd on the break. If he plays well, he will be fine offensively for the SG role, but we need him to play well defensively. Ive heard he's best at defending the Kobe Bryant types, not the Ron Artest types that go inside and are physical, but our biggest problems are the Kobe's, Tmac's ect. I want him to get the starting spot and see what we have. Terry need to be off the bench, Stack hopefully wont get more than 15 minutes and Wright's potential is limited to me.

I'd prefer Terry starting, but I wouldn't mind seeing Green get a shot. It couldn't possibly be any uglier than the Ager experiment.

I agree, AW probably won't be much more than a decent role player. However, my point is that if he can take his game to another level, his defense is something we could use and that would allow us to shift Howard to the 2 or let us trade Howard for a better 2.

I don't think AW will ever be our answer at the SG spot. Hopefully Green will become a star but I'm afraid that is really reaching.
Anybody but Stack.

Are we talking defensive like Ron Artest or offensive like Jason Terry?

Offense & Defense for sure!

A one dimensional player is pretty useless for us our starting lineup isn't that good that we can afford it. A SG has to bring at least 15 PPG and also a defense that holds the other SG under 20 Points, because Kidd and & Damp/Diop are no big time scorer and when scoring only relies on Dirk and an unconstant JHo we are in trouble missing the playoffs.

In fact this is situation we are in right now....really sad. Kidd trade was a big mistake, next season we'll see it. Damn!!!!

yup thats right.
so trade josh and stack to miami for marion and we can afford to have a 2 that plays good offense and not so good defense

Agree...I'd love to have Marion instead of Howard.
I'd trade Terry and Howard for Marion and then Damp and Bass to Detroit for Wallace.

That leaves us with:
Kidd/Barea
Stack/Green/Jones
Marion/George/Wright
Dirk/Rhodes/Singleton
Wallace/Diop

Probably not a contender, but as good or better than what we have now with nearly 55M of cap relief after this season.

If we are going to suck, we might as well get some cap relief in the process.

Having seen enough of Wright with the Nets, it should be him... he can do some of just about everything, and certain things in above-average fashion. Two of them being defending and shooting.

Would JOHN SALMONS suffice? Own + opponent PER was both around 16. So he'd kind of give the Mavericks a blend of both. You could deal Stackhouse separately or bring him off the bench until the deadline.
