Money?

Post#1 » by Hawkeyes » Sun Aug 10, 2008 8:04 am

After signing Smith(Thank God!) to a 5 year deal, how much money do we have left to spend on FAs? I would LOVE to go after Pargo..he would bring us the 3 pt shooter we need badly, and him and Evans would be a huge upgrade over just Jchill. What do you all think? If we don't chase Pargo, do you see us going after anyone else? Or are we done?

So much of it depends on the structure of Josh's contract. If he has an escalating deal (most likely) you figure that his first year cap hit is about 10M. That leaves about 5M in space under the luxury tax with 13 guys under contract. That number could actually be 5.8M since Solomon Jones isn't guaranteed at this point. At their disposal is about 3M of the MLE available and the 1.9M LLE (biannual exception). Beyond that it is minimum contracts like were used on Randolph Morris, Othello Hunter, and Thomas Gardner.

I can see what Pargo could bring to the team, but I'm not sure we bring enough opportunity to entice him. The back court seems to be getting crowded to me. Bibby, Joe, Acie, Mo Evans, Speedy all figure to get minutes and then you have Gardner signed for development. The guy I'm worried about is Acie, who isn't going to develop without playing. Although if they are considering the likes of Pargo and Livingston, it seems like they thinking about hedging their bets on Acie and also against Speedy's health.

To me the pursuit of a veteran big is a higher priority because I still have my doubts about Randolph Morris and Solomon Jones getting minutes under Mike Woodson. A veteran big would be more likely to see the floor with regularity.
