Mo Williams to the cavs? (link)

Post#1 » by Da_James_Gang » Sun Aug 10, 2008 5:46 pm

Supposedly a 3 team deal between us, the bucks, and oklahoma city. I found the rumor interesting just because a 3rd team was mentioned and the name of the team was actually given.

http://news-herald.townnews.com/article ... 173198.txt

It’s been a relatively uneventful summer for the Cavaliers.

All that could change if a three-team trade rumor has any substance to it.

A league source said the Cavs might be pursuing Bucks point guard Mo Williams. All the details aren’t known, but the Cavs, Bucks and Oklahoma City (formerly Seattle) are reportedly involved.

Bucks general manager John Hammond has made it known he has no intention of parting with shooting guard Michael Redd, a longtime target of the Cavs.

Perhaps Cavs general manager Danny Ferry went for the next best thing.

If Williams is headed to the Cavs, however, would Delonte West be included in such a deal? He’s a restricted free agent who has been a regular at Cleveland Clinic Courts for much of the summer. It wouldn’t make any sense to have Williams and West on the same roster since both expects to be starters.

Yeah, this rumor's been floating around now for a few days and Finnan finally printed it... still doubt it goes down. I guess it depends on how badly Mil wants to get rid of Mo and whether the Cavs are willing to take his contract.

The way I heard it Sea would send Watson to Mil, Cavs would send Damon/filler to Sea and Joe Smith to Mil, and Cavs would get Mo and Villanueva. I don't think Mo and CV are Mike Brown type players but supposedly the Bucks' coach wants Watson and Smith. I'm sure Bucks fans will be over here thinking they will get Varejao, picks, etc for Mo but truth is Skiles doesn't want Mo (just like he didn't want to play Ben Gordon) and there are no other teams lined up to take his contract.

So what would you guys do with Delonte West if your version of the rumor is true?

Joe Smith was a fan favorite in Milwaukee.. only problem I would have with bringing him back is his health.

West would be screwed. The only team in the NBA that he's a likely starter for is the Cavaliers. If something happens where he's no longer the presumptive starter forthe Cavs his contract value goes down prohibitively.

If a trade like this were to go down, I'd guess West takes the QO and hopes to sign somewhere next year. If he does in fact re-sign with us this year, however, I think he could be a very solid part of our team. He can start with Mo sometimes, or could make for a great combo with Boobie off the bench.

Maybe we keep him, then we will finally have two PGs on the team(excluding Eric Snow).

Dream scenario is we trade West and pick to Denver for JR Smith.

If i had to think of what the deal would include from a Cavs perspective, i.e. what i think Ferry would want in return.. I would think that we would trade Delonte, AV, and Joe Smith for MoWill and CV.

mo gibson
wally pavs
lebron
wallace/CV hickson
lebron wallace

Delonte and AV go to OKC
Watson, Smith, and Wilcox/Collison go to MIL
MoWill and CV go to Cle

I have never been a huge fan of Mo Williams. He's just slightly more durable than Hughes was with less defense. It all depends on the price which shouldn't include AV for Williams. Something along the lines of Snow's expiring to OKC and Watson to the Bucks would work. Just try to keep is simple and don't let fantasies run too freely in trying to create large deals where the CAVs take on too many bad contracts.

That's exactly why he's not worth what he's asking for in the first place.

He's worth about what Gibson is getting . I'd have no problem with that maybe even a hair more on a shorter deal. But, right this moment his agent sees that the Cavs have been in need of a Pg and he's serviceable and a starter.

I'm with RJGraca on this. Everytime I see Mo, I think Mike James. That's not a good thing.

There is truth to this rumor (I heard about it last Friday and tried to bring it up in that other thread), but dont look past the Damon and Joe Smith aspect of it like MG pointed out. While I heard about Damon and Joe being involved I never heard any mention of Charlie V although I do know from W&G that he is a target of ours and I also never heard anything about OK being involved like Finnan brought up.

My biggest concern is of course losing Joe, since without him we have no low post scorers, which is why the Charlie V part makes a lot of sense to me, but personally I just never heard about it. This is pure speculation on my part but if a Damon and Joe for Mo trade went through IMO Delonte would then be moved for a big that could score in the low post.

Normally once rumors hit the press they are looong dead, but it doesnt appear this one is quite yet.

As for my personal feelings on it... Mo cant play a lick of D and that wouldnt seem to fit on our team, but then again Z, Wally, Damon, LeBron, etc... couldnt play a lick of D either and they all seemed to find a way to improve under Coach Brown. Our defense has never been about 1 on 1 D. Its been team D from the start so that takes away some of the pressure for guys coming into our system. As long as Mo learns how to hedge his guy in the proper direction he will do fine. The fact is we need someone who can score and Mo Will can fill it up in a hurry. If the pricetag is just Damon and Joe you have to do it and then hope you can turn your leftover parts into a serviceable scoring big guy.

Are you serious?

You're leary of acquiring Mo Williams because you don't think we can afford to lose Joe Smith?

Joe freaking Smith?

I realize AV and Big Ben can't score.. but seriously..

If Joe Smith is a guy we can't lose we have a very sad team.

I love his work ethic.. I like his professionalism.. he's even a decent scorer..

but seriously..

wouldn't you rather give LeBron somebody who's decent and not 48 years old for once?
how long is Joe Smith going to help us for? how many years? how many minutes would he play?

how many years would Mo Williams play and how many minutes?

there is no comparison... Ferry would be stupid not to pull the trigger..

i wouldn't mind getting mo williams but you can just throw this into the cavs off-season rumor mill. it wasnt to long ago we thought we were getting barbosa. ferry cant pull the trigger on anything unless it involves acquiring aging veterans.

Which is why I said that you would have to do it, but we'd also have to find a way to get someone who can score in the low post afterword. A team simply cant afford to not have anyone who is capable of scoring with their back to the basket. Thats why Gooden, despite his stupidity, was on this team for so long. We only traded him when we got someone we knew could score down low close to as well as he could. So I wasnt saying we shouldnt do that trade because we cant afford to lose Joe I just felt that it would be an issue Ferry would have to address.

mowill gibson
wally pavs
lebron
haslem CV hickson
Z Wallace

Pretty decent lineup and we still have Wally for an upgrade at the deadline. i would still try to ship west (and more) off to denver for jr smith if possible..

MoWill gibson
Smith pavs
lebron
Wallace CV hickson
Z Wallace

Our backcourt might have some problems on defense but i don't think it would be any worse than mo and wally..
