While today's bullpen effort was disappointing, what was a strength in the first half has really become a concern in general: it's posted a 6.00 ERA since the break, and over 7 since Marte has been acquired (not surprising considering his individual performances.) Given the inconsistencies/injury problems with the starters, we really need the bullpen to return to its first half form...

Well in the past few games a few things have happened. FIrst of all, our starters are not giving any length. When the bullpen has to work 3 or less innings a night it looks a lot better because guys aren't overused and guys are put into positions to succeed. None of them are pressing and most of the time they are inserted in soft landing spots. Second, a couple guys in the pen haven't been able to get it done period which leads to other guys having to come in and immediately face a jam which doesn't help them at all. Namely Bruney and Marte(in non-specialist roles).

The pen will improve again when two things happen. Bruney either figures out how he was pitching early or he gets demoted. Then the starters have to give some length. When/if Joba and Hughes come back that will happen, provided they pitch up to their abilities. -Jitpal

With the bullpen struggling the way it is, you have to wonder what the strength of this team is?

Hitting? Nope. We are middle of the pack.
Starting pitching? LOL. Just look who were are trotting out every day.
Bullpen? It's been a gas can lately.

And then the next question you have to ask is, how the hell are we only 4 games out of a playoff spot?

No offense to Pudge, but I think some of it may have to do with the fact that Molina knows our bullpen arms a little better and what they have. Still, a lot has been personal struggles as well.

Marte is pretty good just not when he's called to go 2 innings.
