Anyone know qualifications / limitations for Practice squad?

I know there is a limit to how many games but do not know how many or if it has to be inactive or can be active.
also is there limit to years in league?

I thought the PS was 3 years experience or less. Also, they're all inactive but can be added to a team's 53 man active squad at any time. I think? Someone else may be able to explain it better.

Um no. PS guys are players cut and available to be signed by any team - even while on PS.
Roster is 53 guys. Each week coaches designate 8 guys inactive who do not suit up - 45 dress for each game. The inactive players cannot be signed by anyone else.

DB you know this. Heck Harrell was inactive for 9 games last season. I kept track and can tell you the 8 guys inactive for every game last season. Both Journal & Gazette report that each week.

My original ? was what makes one eligblle or ineligble for PS?
Doesn't anyone know all the factors for sure?

Actually, you got me on this one. I always assumed that the Active roster meant that they were all allowed to suit up, I never realized that only 45 were allowed to do so. Thanks for bringing this up, I had to read up to see how it worked.

I knew that only 45 are active on game day, but i've yet to hear why this is though and i'm curious why? What exactly is the reason to have 8 players being inactive each game? If you have a 53 man roster, why shouldn't they all be dressed and available to play?

A team may establish a practice squad of no more than eight players who do not have an accrued season or who were on the 45-player active list for less than nine regular season games during their only accrued season. A player cannot participate on the practice squad for more than two seasons.

As for what constitutes an Accrued season


Accrued Seasons: An Accrued Season is a season during which a player has been on full pay status (Active, Inactive or Injured Reserve List) for six (6) or more regular season games. However, a player who is on the Exempt Commissioner Permission List, the Reserve Physically Unable to Perform/Non Football Injury List, or the Practice Squad for any of the six (6) qualifying games will not earn an Accrued Season regardless of his pay status.

And as mentioned a few posts ago, a player under contract to a club as a Practice Squad player is completely free to sign a contract with any NFL club to play on their Active/Inactive list.

Does seem odd. But the setup - I think - harkins back to days of 43 man roster (total) and 7 man taxi squad. There was no active/inactive list or PS. There were a bunch of rules to how many moves you could shuffle b/t taxi & regular roster dur-ng one season. Players got onto taxi after being cut but once signed to taxi-squad they could not be signed by other teams.

Increasing # of injuries made league change to larger roster of present format and throw out taxi squad altogether.
