If he leaves he leaves. I am Kobe's biggest fan but each summer it is getting to point he is threatening to leave. I want Kobe to retire a Laker but he has to do what is best for him and his family.

i'm going to jack this thread again for the last time. since there is no way for me to get a pm to another poster or mod, i've got to do it here.
tracey_nice,
sorry about yesterday's communications. 1) you made a great response to my post and i had totally forgot that part of the episode and thought you were swiping at me.............egg on my face for throwing the joke out.....you completing it and me not even realizing it. 2) like you pointed out i took it personally. 3) i was a complete douche in my responses.
so hopefully you will forgive a lakers brother who was having a bad day and was an idiot to you.
and tony, i know you said to forget about it but it was bothering me so i need to correct my mistake.

I'm not the biggest Kobe fan, but I wouldn't begrudge my favorite player (Jordan) if he decided to go to Europe for that kind of money.
That said, Kobe knows that his legacy will be built by his NBA career, and not his Euro career or his bank account. Unlike LeBron, Kobe strikes me as the type who wants to be the best player in the game, one who is much more concerned with his basketball legacy than his bank account, so I don't think Laker fans need to worry too much.

First of all, Hi everybody. Another laker fan here.
Kobe won't go to Europe, he's just teasing to get better contract next time. Not unless he wins a couple of championships and beats Shaq
Greetings

Yo man, were cool, and my bad also. It was just a misunderstanding, and I will definitely forgive a Laker brother.

"this is the last straw. kobe has offended me and my family. he should play 4 da lakers 4 free. kobe said he'd play on the mars. yeah he vetoed the trade to chicago but dats because chicago is farther than mars. kobe is obviously in this game for the money."
wah-wah. Are you guys serious?
It's highly unlikely any euro team would pony up all that cash. Kobe and Lebron have been cultivating an international market for years now. They're playing up to the crowd, prompted by both domestic and foreign media.
What do you expect? How do you think they'd answer?
Reporter: Kobe, how would you feel if a Euro team offered you 50 million a year.
Kobe: Hell no. I'm an American, and real Americans turn down money. America is also superior to the entire world, so why would I want to work or live anywhere else? And you fools laughed at me when I said I was gonna play in the NBA. Who's laughing now, punks? West-siiide!!!"
peace out.

How about, "I'm here representing my country, trying to enjoy the experience and bring back the gold. The last thing on my mind right now is my contract. Next question."
Simple.

...except Kobe's been hounded by a horde of reporters everywhere he goes, and is asked the same questions in a million ways, and instead of being a robot giving the same PC answers, which he was for most of his career, he's enjoying himself and the moment and playing to the crowd.
Just another example of people - especially the media - making a big deal out of an unlikely hypothetical scenario which Kobe didn't take too seriously - according to some reports who saw him, he was laughing for goodness sakes, and ended his comments with "Peace out."
If people want to read into his comments, they should interpret Kobe's comments as respect for other nations, particularly their basketball clubs. Considering the context, the Olympics, and the newfound diplomatic character of Team USA, is it really that surprising?
Anything else is a bone to pick, or in the reporters' case, attempts to create a story by exploiting the particular circumstances, i.e., Childress' leaving. Which is hilarious. Oh man. The way espn and the reporters portrayed it, Childress' departure is the beginning of the end for the NBA. It's comical. Childress gone...who's next, Lebron? Lol.

that sure is a pretty way to paint Kobe's comments. too bad his past selfish behavior tells a different story. i am pretty sure this is and has always been about the bling bling. both him and lebron simply said they'd play for any team who'd offer 50 big ones per.
what i do agree with you about is that Kobe did not take this situation seriously. the fact it would take 50 mil per year shows you that it would take a lot for him to leave the NBA. also, the fact is, no one in their right mind would pay Kobe or anyone else 50 mil per.

Compared to other things he's said and done in the past, this doesn't even register on the radar.
I'm not really concerned, and I'm not reading anything into it. To quote one of his favorite phrases, it is what it is. I think somewhere in his one of his responses he stated that it would be impossible to leave the Lakers. If he does...I won't respect it, but if he wants to make a cash grab, he's certainly earned that right as arguably the world's best player.
I was just pointing out that he could have easily answered differently. Nobody had a pistol to his head. The media didn't back him into a corner. He's a smart guy, and he chose to answer as he saw fit. For all we know he's still pissed at Buss and wanted to fire a shot across the bow. Who knows?
I do think it's a case of questionable timing to be talking about an individual concern like money at a time when you're representing your country, even as a joke, particularly when such an answer is bound to irritate a portion of your team's fan base -- which it obviously has.
But hey, after last year's scorched earth tour, I'll take it.

Re: Kobe says something that scares me
Wait a minute, did Kobe say anything that would call into question representing his country?
Because I thought Kobe's comments were in reference to leaving the NBA, not leaving Team USA for $50 million.
If anybody really thinks Kobe is exploiting the situation to drive up his salary, I'll just say that's ludicrous. Kobe will get the maximum anywhere. Kobe is one guy who doesn't need to drive up his value. Or are you saying he's on a solo mission to destroy the salary cap (ok, two-man mission with Lebron)? Again, people are just hyper-sensitive and looking for a bone to pick.
What if somebody asked Kobe if he'd play on Mars for a billion? And he said yes - would you all still be in a huff? Because almost as equally outlandish is Kobe leaving for 50m a year from a european team just because Childress going to Greece for 7m. Because Boykins became the highest paid player in Italy at 3.5m a year. I'm sorry, so which one of these hypothetical teams can pay 50m a year? Might as well propose to Kobe a billion to play on Mars.
Actually, Kobe did say he'd play on Mars, last year! Because he was tired of trying to compete with Smush Parker and Kwame Brown. He's about winning championships. I guess the cynic can second-guess everything that Kobe Bryant says, but any reasonable person could see after 12 years, what it is that motivates Kobe Bryant.
Actually, Kobe might have found something that motivates him more than winning championships - a gold medal.
And if we're on the subject of representing his country, which NBA player has sacrificed more of his game for the team? Who has shown more solidarity with his fellow American Olympians (calling them a "brotherhood")? And what other Olympic athlete has garnered so much respect among other Olympic athletes and the host nation?
This is Kobe's shining moment - possibly the greatest of his life.
As a Laker fan, you might feel a little jilted by all the love that Kobe is getting and is showing. However, as an American, it's awesome to see another American held in such high esteem, who's handling the adulation with such poise, grace, and humility.
Especially in these times. Especially considering the perception of Americans and the USA around the world.
Considering how vilified Kobe has been in the U.S., considering the endless US media bitching about everything he does and says, considering the constant scrutiny and character attacks he's had to endure - can anybody really blame Kobe if he does entertain some of these inane hypothetical situations?
Considering all the love Kobe gets OUTSIDE the U.S., considering he's so chummy with foreign reporters and foreign athletes, why be surprised when Kobe says yes to an impossible question, to please the crowd?
People need to relax. Kobe said he'd be wiling to get traded to Mars (emotionally-charged hyperbole), then said to get "your bulls jersey" (vetoed the deal). But no matter what Kobe SAYS, he's consistently shown one consistent passion: he's about winning. Winning is his fundamental desire.
Which is why it's highly unlikely Kobe will leave the NBA, because the man is obsessed with winning at the highest level. Currently, it's the Olympics. When October comes around, it's going to be the NBA. Regardless of what the man says, has he ever done anything that proves otherwise?
Let the man live a little, let him enjoy the moment.
Let him enjoy the love, let him enjoy hypothetical scenarios in which countries give up half their GDP because they love him so much.
In Tombstone, when Kurt Russell's Wyatt Earp escapes his insufferable wife to share a fleeting tender moment with the adoring Dana Delany, did anybody in the theater flip out like ninjas? I hope not.

Re: Kobe says something that scares me
As I said, it is what it is. If we were to rank this on Kobe's laundry list of controversies, it comes in no higher than a 1.5 out of 10. At the moment, I'm about 1,000 times more concerned with his errant jumper, and us winning the gold medal, than I am Kobe's finances or his future with the Lakers. If he leaves, he leaves. I'll worry about it when/if it happens.
The only real reason I jumped into the thread was to respond to the question, "What do you expect? How do you think they'd answer?" as if he had only one course of action. He could have come up with 100 different answers; the one I concocted with took me all of five seconds, and I haven't been living in front of a bank of microphones and TV cameras for my entire adult life.
Sometimes prudence is the best course. Your wife/girlfriend asks you what you think about the smoking blond across the bar. You can either be honest, or risk a joke, and tell her that you'd screw her in a heartbeat, or you lie, and tell her that you didn't even notice. He chose the former, and now the bug, no matter how slim the possibility of his leaving might be, is planted.
I have to hand it to him -- if there's a path of most resistance to be found, no matter how innocent the situation might seem, he has an uncanny knack for finding it.
But again, in the grand scheme of Kobedom, this barely even register. Here's hoping he gets his game in order, brings back the gold, then gives us another great season -- preferrably without forgetting how to walk in the Finals -- and we'll worry about next summer at the appropriate time. Next summer.
