Will Hoiberg Take Over in Minnesota Soon?

The Timberwolves are making sure that Fred Hoiberg is involved in a majority of their decisions this offseason, leading many to believe that he could take over for Kevin McHale at some point, according to The Star-Tribune.

"At least we're going to train Fred," team owner Glen Taylor said. "He's in every meeting; he's in on everything. I don't know that Fred would make better decisions than Kevin would. What's interesting now is they don't always agree. That's interesting to me. They challenge each other. I think they make each other better."

I don't think the wiretap headline really fits the article here. The plan has always been for Hoiberg to take over after McHale decides to step aside. McHale wants to get the team back to the playoffs before he steps aside. How soon will that be?

I agree with Glen, how do we know Hoiberg would make better decisions than McHale. I've liked all of McHale's recent moves.

How do you know Hoiberg isn't suitable for the GM position?

I would agree that this is a valid question, but I'd also agree that we don't know that he IS suitable as well.

The qualities we know about Fred are primarily inferences we've made based on the way he plays basketball. He works hard. He plays smart. He tries to perfect what he can do (or at least I think 3-point shooters are made, not born), Does that mean as a GM he will work hard? I suspect that carries over. Does it make him a smart GM? I have no idea.

The Wolves front office is notoriously tight-lipped about how they operate, and personally, I think that's a good thing. It shows loyalty to the organization and to each other. Unfortunately for the fans, I don't think it allows us the opportunity to differentiate the current (and in my opinion "successful") off-season moves of the last year, and determine whether they are from Hoiberg, McHale, or anyone else. Its interesting to read that they disagree, and it pushes them both. Since I've been happy with the current moves, perhaps that system isn't such a bad way to operate?

we dont know whether he is suitable or not, and i dont want the wolves to take chances, i'd like to see someone who ran a team well coming, like Brian Colangelo, who turned both the suns and the raptors from lottery team to playoff teams, or simply trade McHale for his buddy Ainge....
