Brandon Roy to undergo Knee Surgery

Post#1 » by thegreatblaze » Thu Aug 14, 2008 4:17 am

The Portland Trail Blazers announced today that guard Brandon Roy will undergo arthroscopic knee surgery on Thursday to repair a tear in the meniscus of his left knee. A Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) taken Tuesday revealed the tear in the meniscus.

Trail Blazers team physician Dr. Don Roberts will perform the surgery at Southwest Washington Regional Surgery Center in Vancouver, Wash.

A timetable for Roy’s return will be set following the arthroscopic surgery.

When will our bad luck end? Ugh...

Does anyone know anything about this sort of surgery? Is it major? What's the estmiation for time missed?

Google is your friend.

I'm no doctor but this doesn't seem like a big deal. From what I remember in kinesiology classes, it should typically take a normal / non athlete 2-4 weeks to recover. Probably around the same for Roy. It's really a minor surgery for the knee.

Thats all? If so that would be a lot better than I originally thought it would be.

I'll try google next time. ;)

and boy does that suck to have him out, but if it is a 2month recovery that should have him ready for the start of the season atleast.

I think this was the same routine surgery Oden was going in for when they found out he'd be done for the season :-?

LMAO, Portland has some of the best luck in the league. You've got possibly the best young team the league has seen in the years and a GM who will only improve it. This type of injury is nothing. How about you appreciate the good luck you have. You're like one of those kids at school who gets 90% on a test when everyone else got 60% and you're mad because it wasn't 100%.

Torn meniscus recovery varies by large margins, depending on the tear and the patient it can take anywhere from 4 weeks to 6 months for recovery allowing the player to return to full activity...from experience and from information I have absorbed over the years...good luck Roy, you got big things going on this year...

We've had the worst stretch in the history of our franchise a few years ago, and then we lost Greg to microfracture, now Brandon is going through knee surgery. We haven't done anything yet. We have a great future, yeah, but if we can't stay healthy then forget about it.

Hm... this brings to fruition a lot of the questions scouts and GM's had about Roy's knee prior to the draft.

absolutely no way to determine recovery time until after the procedure has been performed...just the standard, and those estimates might not be for full contact recovery either...

I'm hearing all sorts of different time frames. Hopefully this one's right.

We'll have to wait and see.

That does suck. But luckily this is the off-season, depending on how the well the surgery was done.

4-6 weeks if it's really a minor meniscal tear, maybe even less.
But you never know what they'll find in the end.
