This logic is flawed. The whole ceremonial attire has nothing to do with any ethnicity other than Spanish. The photo the Spanish team took with the dragon in the middle and slanted eye gesture is obviously pertaining to Asians or at the very least Chinese.

It's not the same thing. Thanks for continuing the game.

If there is somebody that must be related is China as a country because the ad was for promoting Olympic games celebrated in Beijing. I still haven't heard any chinese in China that has been offended. People here are saying that the crowd booed Spain when they played against China for this reason. The real thing is that this news isn't known in China and the guys that have said this are some american reporters that haven't asked anybody in the crowd but however they have made their own interpretation.

Did you watch the game, the Spanish team was booed by the Chinese through the whole thing. What do you think that was about?

Not really. Just because we dont know the history of those clothes in Spain is not proving the point.

The history of that attire in the US is considered disgusting.

You wouldnt wear those clothes here in the US and you wouldnt walk up to an asian on the street and make slant eye gestures.

I see what you are trying to say-- its just not the same comparison.

You are just proving my point for me.

I have said that I get that part and I have said that I understand that there was no ill-intent behind it. You can see that in all of my posts on this matter.

You are just unwilling to except the other side of things. The side where there are other cultures who my be offended buy it.

I introduce you to the nazarenos:

http://images.google.es/images?um=1&hl= ... C3%A1genes

Just in case you come around Spain and see 1,000 of them on the streets, you don't have to run away from them. They're not the KuKlux Klan. You don't have to fly back to your country saying "How racist Spaniards are! I saw 1,000 members of the Ku Klux Klan and more than 5,000 people watching the march!

What a good example! It's sad that hardheaded people will find an excuse to go off at a tangent...

It is the same thing because its tradition in Spain to mimic the culture in which you are visiting...be it wearing their custom garbs etc. There is a Spanish saying for it. There is no racial offense intended. The Spanish NTs always dress up in the foreign's countries stuff. Mimicing facial features has no negative connotation in Spain.

The British paper very well knows this but as usual with the British Media they want to paint Spaniards as Barbaric. (Their colonial ways are still alive) So they grab at straws and purposely take something out of context to throw Spain under the bus.

If China has been offended then the apology would have come straight away but since its the British and Americans...that's a different story. As if Spaniards don't already have a negative enough view of Americans...this isn't helping. The fact the Americans are demanding an apology when the photo is geared about going to China is not sitting well with them. Its just the Americans again sticking their noses where it doesn't belong.

Spain cheered in 72-59 win vs. Germany

By CHRISTOPHER BODEEN, Associated Press Writer 14 hours, 18 minutes ago

Gasol, the Los Angeles Lakers center, scored 13 points for Spain, which was cheered by the crowd at the basketball arena.

(...)

The controversy hasn’t been reported in China’s entirely state-owned media and Chinese fans at the 18,000-seat Beijing Olympic Basketball Gymnasium cheered for both teams during the game with no sign of anti-Spanish sentiment.

Huang Shiren, a fan at the Spain-Germany game, said at halftime he hadn’t heard about the picture. When shown the photo he didn’t recognize the gesture.

“Are they looking at something?” Huang asked.

A little pushy there? I don't owe you anything but since the last thread got deleted I forget, mmkay? I don't know if you stated what stereotypes you wanted me to comment on because the thread went poof. Obviously there are Asian stereotypes in American pop culture. Any stereotype is dumb and ignorant. I wish there were more Asian actors who didn't have to know martial arts to be famous in the U.S. It's not that people don't have a problem with it...it's just underneath the surface. The picture with Spain is more "in your face" offensive and that's why it's getting a lot of attention. Nobody said there isn't racism in the United States.

What I find interesting about incidents like this is that one side will find this offensive and another will not. People will go back and forth as to whether it is or not, bringing up past grievances, both sides being called ignorant and that they just don't understand. And the discussion will stop there.

Many just aren't willing to actually have a discussion on why some find it offensive, why others don't and what we can do to further our understanding of one another. In things like this it's not about being right or wrong and being able to point to some sort of percieved victory in a debate, or that your morals are correct, it's about understanding and tolerance.

And if everyone is simply caught up in how they feel how ignorant others are, what is the whole point of this exercise?

Yet its the British and Americans demanding apologies. That is why you aren't getting any sympathy in Spain and rewriting history to claim the Chinese in China are currently offended is not going to help.

Its not being pushy. I mean, I asked you a billion times, and you had a billion excuses.

Just Google it.

There's even a Wikipedia entry on it:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stereotype ... ast_Asians

At the same time you accept Asian stereotypes meant to be bad jokes just because it's "pop culture", you can't forgive and forget the Spanish NT even if we prove to you, that the intention wasn't offensive and that in our country (the Ku Klux Klan-Nazarano thing?, you know? It's indeed a good example) its not a joke, its even an afeccionate sign.

You're not getting it. The Chinese media reports whatever the Chinese government wants them to report. Of course they're not going to start some type of political war with a country they do business with.

I think there are already enough statements so that everybody can build their own image about all this. In my part I have learnt that if i make that gesture in north america some people would feel offended so i won't make it, but it's also sad that there are people that cannot open their minds to understand other cultures and how media can manipulate masses.

You guys are just grabbing at straws.

So the only reason its not a controversy in China is because China is communism and is not reporting it.

So I guess it is the job of the British and Americans to get that apology for them.

I have been one of the first to arguing about the photo. And sometimes too much rude.

But, I think it´s time to leave it die. Come on, we are in the olympics. So many sports to enjoy. Why wasting time with this polemic?

1st) Why hasn't been reported? Maybe because, the ones who do doesn't give a f***? Because they weren't offended?

2nd) Take at as you want it, the Rocky 5000 quote is false. Chinese people either a) doesn't know anything about the photo b) they dont care a+b) the next game they cheer for spain

So the boos on the last game... when we play against... CHINA... I mean, do the math by yourself.
