Suns sign Louis Amundson

Post#1 » by TheMoochinator » Thu Aug 14, 2008 10:17 pm

Just got a text from Gambo and Ash KTAR saying the Suns signed Louis Amundson. I've only seen him play Summer League but he was big athletic and a bruiser. Thoughts?

This is a good signing, dude has been a little underrated. He's basically an energy guy that can play good defense, rebound and block some shots...pretty athletic too. Can't shoot worth a crap though. Guess a more defense oriented Linton Johnson. For what it's worth, a few years ago Ron Artest wanted the Kings to keep him on the final roster because he liked the way he played.

I like that he is somewhat young. Lets see what he can do when he is called upon.

In college, his last year, he avg just over 14 and 8. not bad I guess.

I just heard he was the NBDLs rookie of the year a little while back. Thats for those who have brought up some NBDL names.

Hmm...His stats arn't to great but he's a better option than Marks anyway. He's like 6 years younger and has more potential, these are his stats...

Sounds like a banger, good defense and shot blocking, and no dummy. I like this a lot more than Marks

Basic breakdown:

Good on defense. Rotates well. Quick feet. Slender for a power forward, but makes up for it by not giving an eff. Crashes the offensive glass. Improved handle, but don't ever let him face-up against opposing power forwards unless he has three feet to move around. Jump shot is iffy, but also improved. Pure energy. Anything he lacks in fundamentals he makes up for in effort.

THat being said, he's a practice player. If he were good enough, Philadelphia would've played him more. He hasn't been given a chance, but he won't playing behind Amare and Boris. Oh yeah. Don't even think he can play the 5. He's undersized for being a 4. H would get crushed by the likes of Erick Dampier.

Hey guys Sixers fan here - I just wanted to give you my two cents on Lou - Well we called him Bizarro because early in last season we had Korver and him on the same team and so he was Bizarro Korver - just a useless tidbit :D

Basically two summer leagues ago he really tore it up for us, more so than he did this past one when he was on Golden States summer league team - He showed a real knack for rebounding, hustle and was not afraid to go down low and be physical on defense - Offensively he was limited to dunks and putbacks - Coming out of the summer league I personally thought we had a good back up big man - the problem is that he did not show any of these positive things during the regular season, except for maybe the hustle - whenever he would get in the game he would look a bit lost on the offensive end and he wasnt really effective defensively - he struggled to get position on his man which usually resulted in him fouling - He didnt get into good positions for rebounding either - On offense he is actually worse than reggie evans - he hustle and wasnt afraid to tangle it up but overall he wasnt really effective - now he didnt get very many minutes, which may be the reason for all of the negatives about his game, but the minutes he did get he didnt do anything to warrant his getting more minutes

my personal opinion is that if he were to get a decent amount of minutes consistently he would improve and would be effective in rebounding and playing some hustle defense - another good thing is that he is a hard worker and did spend alot of time in the off season trying to improve his game in order to stay on the team, which he did- I think that he will be able to contribute for you guys if given some minutes

cheers

Magee is right except that I think he is decent on defense not good - if he was good on defense he would have played more for us

Better than Marks, worse than Skinner....I do like that we are filling out our roster with guys under the age of 30 with an eye towards the future.

hmm. Sounds like an ok signing. Would've still preferred it if we got Skinner back, but i guess this is "ok". How "good" was Marks anyway, when he was playing his best? I haven't seen enough of him.

Here is the scouting report on Louis Amundson:

Code: Select all

Draft rank  Year      Player    Ht        College  School
58   2006   Louis Amundson 6-8   UNLV   PF

Code: Select all

Player        ht                Possibilities in the NBA
Louis Amundson 6-8      9th - 12th / under 16min. / Defensive Specialist

Basically he will be at best a 9th -12th man throughout his NBA Career. Used more for spot duty.
Louis will be basically a sparring partner for his teammates to practice on.
Louis will be used mainly in blow out games as a relief to any starter.
Louis is not a replacement if a player of importance was to go down.
Louis if found in a game that is still undecided will be used for setting screens, fouling, or in Louis best case scenario the players he is behind are in foul trouble and he will come in for spot relief.

Code: Select all

Player   Tier    PaceADJ.  --  ( Rookie NBA CI-V)  --(Max NBA CI-V)
Louis Amundson 6-8  VIII   44.5   4.4   12.2

Best Case scenario:
Louis did rate out in several games where he showed the ability to play at the NBA level if the matchups were right for him. He does become turnover prone when more athletic players double down on him. He is neither a scorer or a rebounder but can hold his own if the pace of the game is right for him. The faster the game the better Louis looks, because he is more of a transition center than a center in the blocks. Not fast, but a steady hustler.
This kid should find alot of offers overseas or may get a crack at the NBA late in his 20s.
