Do the Suns need a new arena?
Even though US Airways center is only a bit more than 15 years old, do you think the Suns need a new arena?
I went to quite a few games last year at US Airways but also when I was on vacation in other places I attended games at other venues and US Airways center seems kind of small compared to them? If anyone has ever been to downtown you will know what I mean. It's right across from the baseball stadium, difficult to find parking, alot of traffic, etc. In the spot it's in there might not be alot of room for expansion.
So if you've ever been to the US Airways to watch the Suns play or wondering about it, talk about it here. I also created a poll where if a new arena is ever built where most Suns fans would like to see it.

Re: Do the Suns need a new arena?
Why would the suns build a new arena in that hole out there in Maryvale? IMO, this is a lame topic, but I guess you got me to post on it. The suns arena is in a great location. Glendale IMO is a horrible location, and the suns and Dbacks are centralized and you have freeways and light rail to use in downtown. The arena is not that old, and they did an update not too long ago. They are getting their 2nd NBA all star weekend this year, and the redevelopment of the arena has been helmed as a model for teams to update their current arenas, save money and not dip into the public’s pockets by having the tax payer pay for a new arena when it is not needed. It avoids a huge controversy such as Seattle.
the arena is about avg of what most nba teams have. You don't want that much more and not have sale outs. Next, sharing parking is a smart thing with the city, Dbacks and the suns. That is great business and using the land wisely.
Last is, this location is perfect with how downtown phx is rising again. You have the Dbacks, yes, but you have the new convention center, cityscape project, an entertainment district being proposed called Jackson street entertainment district around the arenas and upscale urban living in the area.

Its at the right place, and should always be in downtown phx.

Everything eastside said.
"Enter Next Bankrupt Airline" Arena is just fine, no need to get greedy.

Yeah downtown would have been my first choice but if the Suns ever did build a new arena downtown there's not much space to build one. Maryvale seems like the perfect place although alot may disagree...

Re: Do the Suns need a new arena?
Putting any new arena in Phoenix on either ends... (Extreme west like Cards/Yotes arena) is a bad idea.
To go to either venue would take over an hour to get to from anywhere in the east valley. I can understand the cards stadium because that thing is a monster and there is no room for it downtown, but if the suns relocate out there or anywhere else outside of downtown, then I am sure some fans won't make it out like they used to.
Especially with gas prices so high....

Looking forward to the 28-29 season.

Added some more poll options, if the place you want isn't listed you can choose other and name it.

Re: Do the Suns need a new arena?
Typical west sider! Outside of Westgate, there is no place on the west side that would even be considered for a new arena. If the time comes and a new arena is needed, which won't be for a while since they put $100M into the current arena only 5 years ago, it will only be proposed in a few choice locations.
Tempe, on Tempe Town Lake.
Scottsdale, near Casino Arizona, and on the Indian Reservation.
Downtown Phoenix.
They are your only logical choices. Why? Because the NBA doesn't thrive off you out in Maryvale, buying tickets, or any individual person for that matter. They thrive off of industry, and the top 5% of the population. I can't afford to buy Lexus Club floor seats, can you? A pair will run you $160,000+ for the season. Who cares if we can add 2 to 3 thousand seats at $25/seat? Its a lot easier to just tack an extra $100 a ticket on to the guy who is already paying the price of a house from the west side for his season tickets. And the majority of those guys live in PV and Scottsdale, and don't want to drive to the westside to see a game.
And I am not hating on the west side, I was raised on the west side and my parents, and sister still live out there. But the NBA and its economics are not dictated by population, urban development or growth; it is dictated by the wealth of a select few and the prosperity of multimiliion dollar corporations, who generally reside on the eastside.

Here in Maryvale is a perfect place though, it has a urban feel to it and basketball was meant to be played in urban areas. That's why if it was ever moved out of downtown. Maryvale would be the best spot. Plus we got alot of things down here for Suns fans to do after the games.

Re: Do the Suns need a new arena?
Maryvale has tha great ghetto feel where no one wants to go, and people get killed all the time. They have a lot of drugs to sell to the season ticket holders too. Tollenson and Avondale???? Thats a good one. As walk said, there are only a few places you would put an arena, and that is in a major downtown, or some better places for development opportunities. Developers and the city does not want to spend money on a new stadium for one of the worst areas in Phx. Soccer is played in Maryvale too, but personally, I have never seen any decent players come out of that area. Basketball is played everywhere.
JC and the city took a chance by building this arena downtown, and so far, it has not worked as they liked, but has upgraded the area. The downtown area is seeing some signs of life and movement in the industry. It is assisting in the vision that usually takes a long time. If you move the stadium in MV, than it will take even longer to get things to come out there. You don’t put arenas next too malls or kid hang outs on the west side.
The old vets coliseum (mad house on McDowell) was between downtown and uptown. The suns, as our first pro franchise should ALWAYS stay in downtown Phx.
We can see you want the stadium out there, but I am sorry, it is not going to happen. Basketball arenas do not get built like the cards stadium size. I think the staples center is 20 – 22,000 people, and US Air holds over 18,000+. They have both the east and west side they can expand if they want too. (the plaza where the W hotel was going to go, and the parking garage on the west side. And if Jackson Street Et Dis happens, no way the leave.
Im sorry man, don't mean to be harsh, but this idea is not that good. Location is key, and this is a great place for it.
Oh, and urban and basketball, why not go and watch Hoosiers and tell me what is urban about that.

LOL. Whoever said basketball was meant to be played in urban areas? Even if it was, the NBA is a business, and they don't make their money from you and me buying tickets. They make their money from corporate sponsers and millionaires who drop ridiculous amounts of dollars.
Keep dreaming that the Suns move into your backyard, but you should open your eyes and see the bigger picture some time.

They will have a new arena if you want to pay higher prices and PSLs.
What's wrong with the one now, I thought it is generally thought of as one of the nicest setups in the NBA?

Re: Do the Suns need a new arena?
Wow serious?????
Do you realize that we the tax payers will be paying on it for another 10 years. On top of that places like Seattle lost their team cause they could find the 300million to build a new stadium like the owner wanted.
Absolutely not I think the Arena is good for my life time unless something so inventive and creative changed the very aspects of comfort and viewing of a game.

Why get a bigger arena? Most phoenicians are the biggest bandwagon hopping fans you'll ever meet. We'll have a hard time selling out the USAC soon as we have a bad season or two.. Absolutely no need to make it bigger or to move the current location. If a new arena is built within 10 years or so, i can't picturing being built too far from the current location.

Re: Do the Suns need a new arena?
The arena was just rernovated in the last few years, it has a lot of life left in it.
If they were to build a new arena I think they would have to keep it downtown, as much as I would like it on this side of town they shot down the hockey arena proposal here in scottsdale already.
If the Hockey arena was around here I'd prob catch a few games a month, as it is I haven't been to a game since they moved to glendale.
