HDTVs - What rocks for Wiz/Skins Viewing

Post#1 » by hands11 » Mon Aug 18, 2008 11:15 pm

I figure will all the fart smellers we have here maybe we can help each other out with our HD selections and deals that pop up.

With Preseason Football already started which will blend nicely into BBall season, I'm
ready of a nice HD set to view things.

I have a Comcast HD tuner so why not get a matching HDTV to rock along with it.

I have heard you can use 2.5 as a factor to figure out the right size.
I'm about 10 feet from the set so I figure a 46" would work nicely.

The best sets I have heard of for fast motion are the new 120MHz with a low 4 or 5 ms response.
They have a 50:000 to 1 model that is getting great reviews.

Yeah, that what I was looking at also. That or the 750

Circuit city has the 650 on sale for those interested.

So how long have you had it ? Did you get it calibrated yet ?

So how far back are you sitting from your 46"

Sweet. My 55 inch Mitsubishi Diamond (older box projection) that I have set up in my bar/basement area is still money, but comes no where near as good as teh 46inch. I'll have to have a wizboard party at my new crib. Got a bar in the basement with a 32in flat panel on the wall, and teh 55 inch. Then I got the 46incher in the middle floor. I have been looking for a nice 40"/42" this week for my room, because my projector is getting old and the price of tv's are dropping/

I didnt think it was worth the price difference for the 750 when I was looking. I wasnt going to use the sub it had anyway. I bought mine about 2 months ago from amazon for like $1750. White glove shipping is included and they call you to set up a time to deliver it, bring it in, set it up and inspect it.

I forget how far back I am, but its probably 7-10 feet. The picture on the Samsungs are amazing, I think (and im not sure how much of a difference) the only better picture out there is the Sonys and they are like $1000+ more...I def didnt think they were worth it.

you folks must be doing pretty well

Personally I'm holding out for lower prices on these sets

plus, I want to buy a set that uses PHOLEDs partly because I own
stock in the company that has a strong position in PHOLEDS plus
PHOLEDs are inherently WAY more efficient. So I may be waiting
another 2-3 years.

But I'll entertain offers to come and watch Wiz games in places
that aren't too far from home (Reston) and give you for FREE, my
honest evaluation of your set/theatre set-up.

I bought a 37" Dell through my company's employee discount program 3 years ago and I'm still very satisfied.

Pani 85u for me. Concierge service is good and the technology is the best on the market. I studied tv's for like 2weeks to figure out which way to go. Worth it.

Panasonic TH50PX80U for me.

President Donald Trump referred to African countries, Haiti and El Salvador as "shithole" nations during a meeting Thursday and asked why the U.S. can't have more immigrants from Norway.

I will contribute to the discussion by throwing my whole-hearted endorsement behind my 50" Panasonic Viera plasma. I have it mounted on my wall along with a fairly inexpensive and non-obtrusive Polk audio suround sound system - all in all it makes for a VERY enjoyable sports viewing experience. Whole thing cost me @$5K (including installation - Circuit City, Sterling) I'm not a huge bargain shopper, but a friend of mine who is recommended this particular system, and I have no complaints. I'm still using Comcast cable for my hi-def channels (as well as phone and Internet - the wife was able to negotiate a sweet deal for all three--leveraging the offer we got from verizon --we now pay less than $100/mo., which maybe isn't as cheap as it seems), I have seen the same tv displaying Verizon fios and it looks even better imho. i also understand that direct tv will be offering upwards of 200 HD channels in the near future, so that might be worth checking out, too. they also provide satellite radio channels.

football (again, just one man's opinion) is the best sport to watch in high-def. I like basketball in hd, too, but it's not nearly as cool as football. there's something about being able to see the look in the qb's eyes as they stand under center that is so damn cool.

Do any of you have Blu Ray players hooked up to your HDTVs?

I just got a Blu Ray and am having problems with the display in that these annoying "red dots" appear all over the screen the entire time I'm trying to watch a movie.

The player is connected via an HDMI cable to a 1080i Plasma HDTV. I've tried messing around with some of the settings but honestly I don't really know what I'm looking for and nothing I've done has helped.

I haven't had any luck with the Google searches I've run and am going to call the BR manufacturer for feedback this week, but I figured I pose it here in case one of you guys know an easy fix.

A similar situation happened to a friend of mine. Are you getting red dots on the dark spots of the videos you are trying to watch?

I'm somewhat sure that he fixed it by switching to a higher quality HDMI cable or just a different one.

The red dots randomly appear all over the screen, both within the actual movie and the black borders along the top and bottom of the screen (in wide screen mode).

I actually suspected it might be the HDMI cable I picked up and was planning on ordering the same one I bought for my cable box but was going to run that by the BR tech support before doing so.

Thanks for the feedback, G0A.

I'm still holding out for an oled TV but the time is probably getting closer.
Best Buy has the curved 55 inch 1080 true OLED from LG @ $2500. Reviews are
that OLEDs have the best picture. And I still own and have even increased
my holdings in Universal Display (ticker OLED) and it has finally begun to
pay off over the last 6 months. The near to midterm future of displays
for phones, tablets and TVs is all OLED. And in the not too distant future
OLED lighting will quite possibly hold a significant piece of that market.
Home Depot already has oled fixtures available for sale.

edit to add - Fish, go to Best Buy and check out the LG true OLED TV.
I'm not the biggest expert but the picture on these sets is just amazing
to my eyes. I'd love to hear your opinion.
