Post#1 » by Mad Balla 15 » Tue Aug 19, 2008 1:33 am

Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski will not return to coach Team USA after the conclusion of this month's Olympic Games in Beijing, according to The Boston Globe.

USA Basketball managing director Jerry Colangelo says he will decide who will take over after the Olympics.

No surprise there. This is just one of the reasons i'm taking in as much of this this current team as i can. I see no more than 2 or three current guys returning

Hopefully a Bryon Scott or another young Coach in the NBA is asked to coach this team in another 4 years.

After these Olympics a replacement will need to be appointed ASAP since the team practices and plays every summer, Gregg Poppovich gets my vote.

Yeah seriously, I would enjoy this team as much as possible. It is not likely we'll see this much talent in one team for a long time. Wish most of them would stay, but it's not likely..

Nate McMillan is the obvious choice.

Nate would be a good choice, but so would others, and I just hope they find one asap.

Why would he announce this now? These types of things need to be kept secret until after the gold medal game. I know that if they don't get gold and he says he wont be back there will be much more negative talk like he was fired... but it doesn't seem like hearing this is keeping the focus on winning the gold.

Can't see why it shouldn't be D'Antoni if he wants the job, he's already an assistant and is an expert on the international game.

Popovich or Mcmillan to me would be ideal. These guys are both great coaches who know defense and don't give star treatment to players. Those are the most important things to me for the headcoach. It's also why I wouldn't want D'antoni as head coach, even though I'm glad he's on the staff for his international ball knowledge.

I kind of like the idea of using college coaches.

Collegiate coaches aren't tempted to play favorites because it could help their teams through free agency.

What about UNC's Roy Williams?

How about a coach that can get in a playbook. That really is the key, we need a **** playbook no questions asked. We got this far with what we have but if an international team's PG has a real good day, we're in trouble. Coach K is one of the most over rated coaches of all time. If you replaced Coach K with Philadelphia's Maurice Cheeks, you wouldn't miss a beat.

Yep, if they are as serious as they say they are about the continuity of the program then you would think this would be the case. Whoever got them to play this unreal defense, whether it be Coach K, Kobe, a maturing Lebron, D-Wade or Coach McMillan, or a comboination of all, it defintely wasn't Dantoni.

If not McMillan, then like blogger I am also still feeling the college head coaching vibe. I think having a collegiate coach cements the notion that international ball is different from the NBA and mindsets have to change. With the next pool of players likely being a young group, they need someone who commands respect..somone of who will follow the template set by the Redeem team, the template of great defense. I wouldn't mind John Thompson III

I don't agree with these suggestions.
I think that if international ball is to be taken seriously in the states you need a full time coach who can look at all available players including NBA, College and Euro based players as well as keeping in touch with the other international teams.
There are good coaches out there who aren't currently working... Van Gundy, Silas etc
