Salary Question

Post#1 » by LAKERLAW » Wed Aug 20, 2008 7:06 am

The Lakers are currently over the cap, and being over the cap obviously restricts a teams signing ability which leads to my question:

If we are currently over the salary cap how can we possibly

1. Sign Andrew Bynum - he would demand max, if not close to max dollars and we are already over

2. Resign Lamar Odom - Again, we are already over the cap so how can we resign a player for anything more than the MLE

Help...

Since both Odom and Bynum have been on teh team for years, the Lakers can resign them for whatever money they want, even if they are already over the cap. Lakers own their bird rights. No one can offer them more money than the Lakers can, regardless of the Lakers' cap situation.

The MLE is money that is only used on free agents (that would be leaving their teams and coming to the Lakers, like Mourning/Pargo/Whatever) as far as I know.

The only problem here is that if both are given whats predicted (Bynum = Close to max, Odom = 10mill+), then Buss will be in luxury tax HELL. He will have to shell out multi-million dollars extra just to keep these guys in town, which no one knows if hes willing to do.

If Buss and the gang dont mind shelling out the millions in luxury tax to keep this team together, then its not a problem. If for whatever reason they dont want to do it, then Lakerland will be in a loop.

Some day it will all come back to us. It will be a day when we have to cut and trade and get cheaper. I hope that never comes. When Kobe retires someday and Lamar is done here, we will still have big deals, but it might not be as much as they are today. Want to win, it cost. Fans can not go to the game anymore due to the prices of the tickets. Just be thankfull that you can get tickets to a dodger game for 9-11 dollars for a seat.
