OT: TOP 5 MVP CANDIDATE FOR 2008-09

Post#1 » by NashtyNas » Tue Aug 19, 2008 1:22 am

Okay, so considering that the board is half dead other than the Dragic talk, I decided we needed a topic to have a constructive debate or discussion. I came up with this. Name the Top-5 Candidates for MVP for the upcoming season, and possibly provide why. Thanks ;)

MY TOP FIVE:

1. LeBron James - Does this guy need reasoning? He's been the closest to averaging triple double since MJ (while scoring 20+, not like Kidd). He turns his play up when his team needs him, and he's always a big time performer. No doubt he has to win at least one of these.

2. Chris Paul - With the addition of James Posey, the Hornets should be rolling next year, and he's their Nash. He will also be a winner of this award at least once.

3. Chris Bosh - From what I've seen in the Olympics, he's going to be a beast this next coming year. Yeah, the Raptors don't have a team made with all superstars, but with making Jose the permanent starter and more importantly bringing in JO, there has been a lot more pressure taken off Bosh. He no longer has to gaurd the opposing Center, nor does he have to be the only inside presence on both ends of the floor. This should REALLY take him to the next level.

4. Elton Brand - Lot of you may be surprised by this because he's coming off an injury, but this guy is a KG type player. I still haven't forgotten the HAVOC he caused versus us some time ago. If he's healthy, which he seemed to be with his return, he will be a VERY legit candidate for MVP.

5. Tracy McGrady - It obviously depends on if he can play the 82 games or not, but if he does, he is going to be up there in the MVP talk. Last years 22 game run was nothing short of spectacular, and he did a lot to keep his team in the playoffs too. He has a passion for the game, and with adding Ron Artest to their starting lineup with their already defensively sound team, I think they will be surprising next year. Only problem for them as off now is Point Gaurd...

Next 5 (no order)
Amare Stoudemire - As much as I wanted to put him in my top five, he wont be given credit for what he does when Nash and Shaq are here.

Brandon Roy - Oden. Aldridge. Rudy Fernandez (I hate this). Outlaw. Webster. They will be the best young team next year, no doubt.

Dwight Howard - I would put him in the top ten, but he is nothing but a physical beast according to me. He doesn't have the best ball IQ, nor skill. The real MVP for that team should be Hedo Turkoglu..

Kobe Bryant - Don't want him to repeat, hope he doesnt.

Dirk Nowitzki - He wants to win. REALLY badly. Let's see what happens.

THOUGHTS / YOUR TOP 5 / 10!?

1)Amare Stoudemire-Probally shouldn't be this high but if he average 30-10 the whole season like after the Shaq trade he should be in the running for the MVP.

2)Lebron James-Enough said

3)Chris Paul-Another year older, gained experience on team USA will most likely be better before and is the best point guard in the NBA.

4)Kobe Bryant-He won it last year but that didn't stop Nash from winning it 2 years in a row

5)Dwight Howard-Lead the league in rebounds and is a force in the league.

Amare's not winning MVP while LeBron is in the league, or while Nash is on his team.

1. LeBeast
2. Wade
3. Paul
4. Deron
5. Kobe

Top 5 in no particular order:

Chris Paul - I expect them to be somewhere at the top of the West

Deron Williams - They both look great in the Olympics, I see them looking better this season

Elton Brand - They almost have a complete team - the 3pt shooters. They should be a top4 seed.

Lebron James - Mr. Trip Dub. This guy should always be in the top 5 MVP candidates

Chris Bosh - With addition of JO, I think Bosh will improve a lot simply from the attention JO takes away from him.

Then the next 5 in no particular order

Amare Stoudemire - If he puts up 30-10, and we are in the top 4 in the west, he should be a serious candidate.

Brandon Roy - I put him here because I think the Blazers are going to be very good this season, however with the West getting stronger, I don't see them breaking top 6 in the west, but his leadership should garner him a few MVP votes.

Dwight Howard - I can see him do about 25-14 this season, and with a good team and good coach, it should translate to wins.

Kobe Bryant - I just don't see him as a 2-time MVP, but like LBJ, you can't have a top 10 without Kobe being mentioned.

Chancey Billups - I still think Pistons are a top 5 team in the league and being the leader of the Pistons, he should get a mention.

I'm gonna make a case for our man Amare. He finishes in the top 3. Do you all remember the numbers he put up after the shaq trade? Those numbers were MVP-type numbers. Now he'll have Shaq by his side all year so I'm expecting a very strong season by Amare, an MVP-type season fo sho!

^ I agree to a certain extent, but thing is, he won't get all the credit he deserves BECAUSE of playing alongside Shaq and Nash. People will credit Shaq for taking off defensive pressure and Nash for getting him easy baskets, which is why he isn't winning an MVP as long as Nash is our starting PG.

Exactly....As much as I fell Amare will be a top 5 this year. He just wont get the credit he deserves until the oldies (but goodies) are gone.

1. Lebron- Best player in the league. He is due to win.

2. Wade- If healthy, he can challenge Lebron as the best player in the league.

3. Pierce- If the Celts can win 60+ games, he will finally get his due.

4. Paul- Best PG in the league, but is his supporting cast good enough to allow him to duplicate his MVP worthy season?

5. Amare- Can he maintain what he did in the last three months of the year for an entire season?

Other Notabeles Mentioned Previously:

Bosh- Not a chance! Amare, Gasol, Boozer, Garnett, Dirk, Brand, and even Michael Beasley are all better.

Brand- Top 10 if healthy, no way he is top 5. Too many PF's in the league are better; Amare, Dirk, and Garnett.

Kobe- I am in the minority on this one....I LIKE HIM!!! He won't win another one in his career. Right it in stone, its over.

Dwight Howard- If Yao is healthy, Howard isn't even the best Center in the league. And Oden is going to push him even lower down the totem pole.

Deron Williams- Paul, Nash, and Parker are all better. Never going to win an MVP with Paul and Parker in the league.

Garnett- Not the best player on his team, and Pierce finally proved it in the Finals.

Brandon Roy- He will never win an MVP, Oden is the best player on the team. Think Hakeem and Clyde. Shaq and Kobe (LOL). Too bad Oden is younger than Roy.

Dirk- Dallas won't be good enough for him to get any real support behind him.

Chauncey Billups- Are you high? Nuff said.

wait...one more thing, Billups is so valuable....he can be replaced by.................. who? .......... wait for it.................. who?

      Rodney Stuckey.

Really...Garnett and Dirk already have MVP's and both have been named to an All NBA team every year but one for almost a decade.

Boozer was third team All NBA last season, where was Bosh? And Brand is a far better player than he is given credit for, yet he has as many All NBA appearances as Bosh, one.

Barring injury, Amare would be making his 5th All NBA first or second team this year.

And while Gasol is not going to challenge Bosh statistically, when he is surrounded by good players as he is in LA, he will be far more efficient as seen in his FG% increase after the trade.

Beasley, a stretch at this point, but give it a couple years.

also, if I were going to lay money down on who the next PF or C to win an MVP is going to be it wouldn't be Amare or Howard, it would be Greg Oden. Think Howard with an offensive game.

MVP will probably go to the best player on the team that wins the west.

Only if the Hornets have the best record.

Lakers...Kobe won't get another one, even though he should, for whatever reason people don't like him.

Spurs...Three headed dragon, cancels out all three.

Rockets...Yao or TMac, who is better?

Suns...Amare has the stats, but Nash has the voters respect, cancel each other out.

Jazz...Deron Williams is their best player, but he is the fourth maybe third best PG in the league.

If Dallas can miraculously turn things around, Kidd will have to have an amazing season, taking votes and credit away from Dirk.

The Blazers, if they can somehow sustain how they started last season I will be amazed. And the credit will go to Roy and Oden. I think Oden is going to surprise a lot of people around the league. He is going to put up monster numbers.

With all that, I don't see how Lebron doesn't win next year. Maybe if Miami can bring themselves back to a top 3 finish in the east, Wade could win.

Return to Phoenix Suns
