Anyone think Donyell could be this season's PJ?

Also - every year mid-season a few guys get bought out for cap reasons... who do we think may be bought out during the year this year?

we don't need Donyell. Perk, KG, Powe, David, Obryant, and Scal can get the job done.

Donyell is old and out of shape. He can shoot the 3 at an average percentage but thats about it.

I think we're good as a team for now. Danny will most likely keep an open roster spot or two ala last season to give himself some flexability in case he needs to bring a couple guys in during the season. But without a doubt we're a good enough team win 60 games again as is.

Marshall plays the position that we are deepest at and I don't even know if he's an upgrade over Scalabrine at this stage. I would rather leave a roster spot open for someone else.

I agree with passing on Marshall, he really has no spot on our roster with our depth at PF, and is too old/slow to defend the three. Hopefully Danny can find a someone at the three with some experience and decent bball skills to backup Pierce, and we don’t have to rely on a platoon of rookies/ TA (who I like, but is really a SG).

Donyell is pretty much cooked at this point. Love the guy, though, and always rooted for him when I went to GS games back in the day.

In a way he would fill a need as a 3 point chucking big man to stretch the floor; not a burning need but something we could use.


I really have a feeling that Joe Smith will get bought out and join us this year. I really thought he was tough in the Cavs series and I think he could be very useful, although he doesn't fill a really burning need.

If Joe Smith gets released, I'd be all over him. He's a PJ Brown clone and I doubt OKC will be interested in keeping him around. It's not like they're making a title run. If they don't release him, offer a 2nd round pick or the rights to Semih Erden or something.

That would be awsome, hed fit the role of PJ perfectly. I remember him getting boards and hitting every shot vs us.

I agree, I thought he did a great job for Cleveland, he seemed particularly dangerous and effective on the floor. Perhaps he was a throw in for salary match purposes, if he is bought out he'd be I think a better option than PJ was.

I'm not sure how we make a trade for him though, as Scals salary would need to be in there I believe for salary match purposes, and I can't imagine OKC picking up an extra year of Scals contract.

Irregardless, Smith would be a great summer 2009 FA pickup, especially if one of Powe/Davis moves on.

Guys like Smith possibly being available later in the year, should be reminder to us (well, Danny) not to be in too much of a hurry to fill that 15'th roster spot (assuming Walker being around).

I don't buy Smith as a PJ Brown clone; there are some similarities, but Smith is less of a rebounder and certainly less of a defender than PJ, not sure if he's big/strong enough to play center. But he's better on offense, he still has the reliable J that PJ used to have but seemed to have lost (except in the clutch against the Cavs in game 7)...

i was a huge marshall fan, i even have his rookie card. and i had him on my fantasy squad the year he went bonkers, something like 16pts, 10rbs, 1.5stls 1.5blks and 1.5 3pts.

that seems like a lifetime ago. the last few times i saw him play he looked too slow and unathletic for the NBA game.

The Joe Smith idea is a lot more attractive as he would add some length, but he is probably still too capable a player to be released teams will look to deal for him.

I know we keep looking for someone to replace Posey's shooting but I still think this team was too reliant on the jumper and the 3 last season. I love shooters but I like the idea of attacking the rim more. The inability to get easy baskets in the half court and not racking up the fouls is what lead to us having to play more playoff games than we should have to get to the finals. The addition of O'Bryant as well as expanding the role of Powe and Davis should get us more production in the post, easy baskets, and more trips to the line.

The other thing to look at is Gabe Pruitt who is likely going to get a look at the pg spot. This kid is a shooter. So adding House and Pruitt to Ray and Paul there will be plenty of 3's going up. Tony and Rondo should get to the point that they should be able to knock down the wide open set your feet ones. Not to screw with what works but Pierce was giving KG a lot of crap about not taking a step back. It would not shock me if KG spent some time this off season seeing if he can be just as effective from one foot further away he has shot it well in the passed.

I would not bank on Rondo ever being a reliable 3 point shooter, even a spot up shooter 3 point shooter. Kenny Anderson never became a reliable 3 point shooter, nor did Jason Kidd. That being said, he improved drastically last year from his rookie year, so I'd hope the continued improvement would be there for 08-09 as well.

Rondo hit two of the biggest threes Ive ever seen in game 5 of the Clev series. If he misses those threes before the half we prob lose that game/we prob lose that series/we prob have no championship/this board goes crazy with fire doc post/trade pierce posts

I liked Donyell Marshall - about five years ago. I don't think he can play anymore. Big seven footers, Parish, PJ Brown etc - can play on. SFs cannot.
