For real Knicks? John Gabriel as head scout?

Gabe has a quality basketball mind and is a pretty good judge of talent, so this is a good job for him, especially considering that he knows his way around the books and can eye things within their spectrum...I know you were probably being funny, but...

Gabe's inability to judge talent was his undoing. He's one of the best recruiters in the game, no doubt, but he had some of the worst drafts in NBA history. He was never great at judging FA's (we were narrowly outbid for Maurice Taylor back in the day), but he was unbelievable at reeling them in.

I think Gabe is a solid pick. Look at what he did with Portland.

I think his only wrong doing ws basically relying on team needs and putting the task of evaluating talent to the coach,

John Gabriel will be good for the knicks. No one can deny that Gabe is good for clearing cap space. Granted he does sign rediculous contracts but he does know how to clear cap space. Knicks definitely need help in that department.

Wait a minute--I am a big fan of Gabe, but he was AWFUL at drafting...

According to Schmidtz he was GM from '96-'04

1996 1 27 Evans, Brian SF Indiana
1996 2 49 McCaskill, Amal PF/C Marquette
1997 1 17 Taylor, Johnny SF Tennessee-Chattanooga
1997 2 47 Washington, Eric SG/SF Alabama (traded to Denver)[7]
1998 1 12 Doleac, Michael PF/C Utah
1998 1 13 Clark, Keon PF UNLV (from Golden State,[5] traded to Denver)[8]
1998 1 15 Harpring, Matt SF Georgia Tech (from New Jersey)[9]
1998 2 42 Simon, Miles SG Arizona
1999 2 38 Profit, Laron SG/SF Maryland (from Golden State,[10] traded to Washington)[11]
2000 1 5 Miller, Mike SG/SF Florida (from Golden State)[5]
2000 1 10 Dooling, PG Missouri (from Denver)[8]
2000 1 13 Alexander, Courtney SG Fresno State
2001 1 15 Hunter, Steven C DePaul
2001 1 22 Sasser, Jeryl PG/SG SMU (from Houston)[12]
2001 2 32 Cook, Omar PG St. John’s (from Washington,[11] traded to Denver)[13]
2002 1 18 Borchardt, Curtis C Stanford (traded to Utah)[14]
2003 1 15 Gaines, Reece PG Louisville
2003 2 42 Pachulia, Zaza PF/C Ülkerspor (Turkey)

Granted there were some moves in there on draft night like getting Magette in '99, but... I count about 4 solid pros in that list which IMO equals FAIL.

I agree with OP that its ironic he is a "scout."

The only player on that whole list worth mentioning is Mike Miller

Although maybe not the best at drafting. The bold players did have careers in the NBA outside of their contract with the Magic or injury. He wasn't "that bad".

That's it in a nutshell.
Basketball is driven by three principles:

1) Movement 2) Application of fundamentals 3) Predictability

I dunno man. Only 5/12 of his first round selections earned contracts after their rookie contracts expired, and with the exception of Pachulia (who was then left unprotected in the expansion draft) he generally threw away second round picks too. Any way you look at it, that's pretty ******* terrible.

I've been impressed with what Portland has done in assembling a young and talented team, but I have a hard time believing that Gabe (or at least the same Gabe we knew in Orlando) played a large role in evaluating that talent. I'd rather give KP all the credit.
