Anti-Flop Rule For Next Season

Post#1 » by JordanL » Fri Aug 22, 2008 9:53 pm

Just read this on another forum.. looking for a link...

Starting next season, the league will fine players for "flopping" -- the art of exaggerating a collision to provoke referees into calling a foul. NBA officials decided to act after compiling data this season that showed the problem had become widespread. Jackson said the league would penalize only "the most egregious flops." Although defining that will be difficult, Jackson said it would be clear enough when a play qualifies. "We're talking about the play where a player barely gets touched and somehow ends up in the second row," he said. The job of classifying flops and assigning penalties will be handled by Jackson's staff, including a number of league observers who already attend games in every arena. Referees will continue to make calls as they see them, but the league will use video replays to determine whether to fine a player. The new policy is certain to be controversial, because it involves a judgment call that can border on mind reading.

this is a stupid rule. All it does is make young role players barely making any money scared that if they fall the nba will say it was a flop.

They should make a rule about the sh*tty refs. The coaches should have an opportunity to make 'challenge' a call but can only do it twice a game.

no...it means that young players wont fall over unless they actually get elbowed in the face, or actually get a shoulder in the chest.....those sound like fouls.

Read the quote, dude.
Jackson said the league would penalize only "the most egregious flops." Although defining that will be difficult, Jackson said it would be clear enough when a play qualifies.

They obviously aren't going for the guys that just want to take a charge like Battier or the young role players. They're trying to cut down on the obvious floppers like Varajao, Ginobili, Pierce who act like they are shot out of a cannon at the slightest contact...

This is actually a good move from Stern for once and a step in the right direction for restoring the credibility of the league. Though, I will miss seeing Baron Davis do this.

Agreed with the being able to challenge a call. It would be a huge bonus to the game even if it isn't widely used. It would make refs study the game alot more closely and make more accurate calls.

Wont change a thing. Need to T guys up for flopping.
"Thibs called back and wanted more picks," said Jorge Sedano. "And Pat Riley, literally, I was told, called him a mother-bleeper and hung up the phone."

They should do something about verbal flopping too just to piss off Kobe.

This is a tough rule to implement. It's another judgement call by the refs rather then something black and white. They have enough trouble with the black and white calls.

With the league putting in the circle that forces defenders away from the basket and all the handchecking rules they have greatly limited a defender that has to deal with a penetrating offensive player. With this it will be even harder.

Now if they also put in rules that called the offensive foul when players pull a Shaq and just pummel their defender in the paint I'd be all for it. It's not so bad now but when Shaq was in his prime he just pushed defenders out of the way or ran them over and the league let it happen because they needed stars at the time.

No thanks on challenging a call, i cant stand watchin tennis because how many challenges they use and football just gets slowed down by the challenges.

Please! No instant replay in Basketball. This concept of perfect refereeing has already ruined Football. The idea of taking an up-tempo exciting game and stopping it to watch video is horrible.

Hopefully this rule will expose Derek Fisher to the masses as the egregious flopper he's always been.

I don't disagree, but this helps set the stage for that kind of rule change in a couple of years. I don't think they felt they could go from 0 to T in a single offseason.

I mentioned this in another thread. If the refs were good enough to call an offensive foul without the defender falling, the defender would never do it.
If a defender is still or moving backwards, and the attacker drops the shoulder, it should be called, if it was, no defender would go to the ground if he knew he could stay on his feet and still get the call.

pretty much...they would need to do it right there on the spot to make it most effective...it can be tough at certain angles to discern a flop from a legit fall, however on the other side, if we're going for the most egregious stuff, 9 times out of 10 the ref should be able to spot this immediately...I hate flopping to death, but I dont know if after the fact is the best way to deal with it, after the fact as a supplement to immediate would be great...idk...we'll see...

I think it's horrible. Who's gonna decide which are "the most egregious" flops? The league office? The same office that has a double standard and fix games?

I guess, the Varejao's of the World are going to be fined and suspended, but at the same time, supa dupa young stars like Wade would come clean in Flopapallozas like the '06 Finals.
