Nicknames

Post#1 » by e4Nf6 » Mon Aug 25, 2008 3:00 am

I can remember reading the Golden State board at some point last year and having zero idea which players they were talking about because of all the nicknames...

My earnest hope is that one day this board will have the same phenomenon. Outsiders will not be able to participate in our discussions because they wont speak our secret Bobcat Language.

I was paging through the Shamsports.com profiles and I found two nicknames that need to go into circulation immediately.

The First:
Alexis Ajinca = "Jinx"

Very clever... Both a play on his name, and if you like, a shot at the draft-pick.

The Second
Sean May = "Cookie"

Simply Hilarious.....And also just. May deserves to be mocked as much as possible. "Donut" or "Alcohol" would be a little more topical as I'm told they are May's favorites. However, I prefer "Cookie" as it has a more Whimsical edge. Painting May as a child (or a sesame street character) who can't keep his hands out of the cookie-jar.

Two other players for which I think we are set Nickname wise:

Crash
Hammer

Desperately Needing a nickname:
Okafor
Richardson
Felton

Less-Important players who have characteristics that deserve nicknames:

Ryan Hollins: Crazy Athlete, no Bball skills to speak of.
Shannon Brown: Has a girls name.
Jermareo Davidson: Only guy on the planet named "Jermareo" (again, according to Shamsports)

Btw, things like "Mek" and "Felts" and "JRich" are not nicknames. They are just "for-shorts" or abbreviations. A good nickname is like a riddle, the nickname-hearer should have to take a moment to figure it out.

I thought Hollins was already "Twiggy?"

Is that right?

Don't know who came up with it, but it's pretty good. Skinny and clueless.

so many good nicknames hard to choose for some....

wallace = crash
carroll = hammer
may = mcmay, cookie?
morrison = ammo, stache, all the other 50 nicknames from the commercial
hollins = twiggy
ajinca = 135, the awful tower, french toast, jinx, frenchie, le kwame
davidson = superjamereo?
dudley =
dj =
felton =
richardson = swish?
brown =

too bad some of our best nicknames have left: pillow, fabio (el bandito), nifong, touche

Forgot about "Twiggy", its' decent, maybe we can do better.

"Stache" should be perfect for Morrison except I can't get behind it because it's the nickname I gave to the lady at the Bojangles Drive-Thru in high-school. To me... there will always be only one "Stache,"
I would prefer to riff on Morrison's nervous/unsure play in his rookie year. I like "Shakes," but "Ammo" and "Stache" are probably here to stay. :(

I'm fine with Crash, Hammer, Swish, Twiggy and Ammo. I can live with Jinx and Cookie, although I do like McMay better.

Some suggestions and reasons. Some of them suck, just to warn you.

Jermareo Davidson - Luigi. He is a stretched out, tall version of Super Mario. And because he's green like Jermareo (not a lot of experience). I could also support a Luegi because of spelling.

DJ Augustin - Mixman. A play on the DJ first name, and because he mixes it up on the court, distributes the ball to everyone.

Ray Felton - Homer. This is because all the Ray Felton fans on this board think he's so much better than he has shown to be. And because for all homer UNC fans, he's the poster child.

Jared Dudley - Melolite. Because he reminds me of Carmelo Anthony in his game and his hair. Done just not quite as well.

Emeka Okafor - Nightmare. Family is from Nigeria, and Christian Okoye was the Nigerian Nightmare. Also trained with Hakeem, the Dream. And sometimes his offensive ability is nightmarish. Or opponents trying to shoot over him have nightmares the night before if you want a positive slant.

Nazr Mohammed - Nomad. He was drafted by the Jazz, and played for the Sixers, Hawks, Knicks, Spurs, Pistons, and now Charlotte. Don't know much about it, but was Mohammed the prophet a nomad? Even is he wasn't, still the image is related somehow in my mind. And you can't spell Nazr Mohammed without Nomad.

Shannon Brown - Starks. Player that is marginal, but one huge dunk is what we remember of him and makes him seem better.

Larry Brown - Sphinx. This is from the 1999 movie, Mystery Men, about a misfit group of "superheroes" who have terrible superpowers. Their de facto mentor was the Sphinx, a older man who just spewed philosophical platitudes that seemed to inspire the group, except for Ben Stiller. For some reason, I loved this movie. Also, because Larry Brown is old, like the Sphinx in Egypt.
Who I woulda took:
2023: Miller | 2022: Duren | 2021: Bouknight, Jones | 2020: Ball | 2019: PJ | 2018: MPJ | 2017: Monk | 2016: Damian Jones | 2015: Winslow | 2014: Vonleh, Napier | 2013: McLemore | 2012: MKG | 2011: Knight, Kawhi

I can't remember who came up with it but I thought that McMinus was brilliant - and fitting considering his negative impact in the new +/- stat that yahoo was rocking last season.

I read that Sheed used to call Larry Brown "Pounds" in Detriot - because his initials are the abbreviation of the weight which I thought was pretty funny. The article also mentioned that Sheed was the only one who could get away with calling Brown "Pounds" - which to me made it even better.

(P.S. Anyone else waiting for W_Hamilton to find this thread and have a melt down??)

Too bad the two best of all time are not Bobcats. Those two are Yao Ming a.k.a. Shaqie Chan and then you have David Lee a.k.a. Da White Howard.

With the tone of the board recently, I'm just waiting for someone to ask how we can even be talking about something frivolous like nicknames before we have a decent PF. We should all be furiously testing trades with the trade checker, FOR THE TEAM!

I like the way tijo thinks! the more obscure, and the more explaining necessary with a nickname the better....

- How about just "The Prophet" for Nazr.
-I like the "Homer" idea for Felton alot, but Felton isn't the homer here, it's the fans. So his nickname should be something that Homer likes. Possibly "Donuts," or "Marge" Just an idea, "Homer" might work better
-DJ's name could reference his height, "Six Feet Under" or "6FU" (SFU?) would be good but I think that nick belongs to somebody else...
- I heard some some Mexican commentators calling Chris Paul "El Chaparito," which means (roughly, I think) "The Little Torrent," I think it would be funny to give DJ a a Spanish nickname with no justification at all for it being in Spanish. I can imagine Che Guevara style T-shirts with DJ's image instead, with "El Chaparito" and his number on the back.

Donuts/6FU
Swish/Hammer/Starks
Crash/Melolite/Shakes
Cookie/Luigi/Jinx
Nightmare/Prophet/Twiggy

Think what an advantage we'll have over other teams when we put that in the game thread. They'll have no idea who's playing!

COME ON GUYS!! GET WITH THE SERIOUS STUFF ANG GET US A PF!!!

Now that we've got that out of the way (I knew E4 was baiting me!) let's return to this excellent fun!

> Per Tijo dittos on the following: "I'm fine with Crash, Hammer, Swish, Twiggy and Ammo."

> May: McMAY is among the best ever!! Love it, and it's still kid friendly despite his many other vices that should not be brought up in a family setting.

> Ajinca: I do like JINX, but I fear his true nickname will "BUSTE" which is french for BUST. Another could be "Ficelle", which translates to "string" in french, and is also a very thin version of the baguette (soft bread), but not a very easy nickname.

> Dudley: I'll suggest "GRUNT" as a term of endearment based on his willingness to do the dirty work. I've heard Dude used and, in a unique way, almost says the same thing.

> Okafor: This is a tough one, as Mek's personality or game don't lend themselves to many terms of description. I say he has no nickname, kind of like the "man with no name" Clint Eastwood character. Maybe his nickname is no name at all, just that "ooo we ooo we ooooooo" whistle from the Clint western.

> Carroll: "Acolyte" is my suggestion, as Matt looks like a young guy lighting the candles at church, but also lights up the game with his 3 pointers.

> Davidson: "BUDGET", as in our budget PF that might end up with more minutes than he's worth...also like Budget rent-a-car before they became really legit.

> Nazi: "Lumpy", just because he doesn't do anything great, and sort of goes about his business in a mild fashion.

> DJ, Shannon Brown, others: Not enough book on these guys to ascribe a nickname.

Fun to think about!
I continue to wait...and hope...for the return to Hornet's glory.

The Alexis's team-mates in the junior french team called him "too long". And last year, he played at Toulon...

Does(did?) Brian Cook have a weight problem? If so I will concede.... If not definitely belongs to our guy.

Le Kwame is really harsh :) I like 135 or ALT 135 (we could add that he is so versatile or that he has not a real position - I think we all still remember the real origin of the nickname. JINX is not so good because it is derived from wrong pronounciation of Alexis' surname.

It is actually JerMareo with capital M - this could make any SuperMario references better.

I don't like Melolite - I don't think Jared is a sucker puncher at all.

Nightmare is an interesting option but I'm sure Emeka would not like it:)

Sean May - it is difficult to make a working nickname for someone with such a short surname. But I like McMay, Cookie, May I have another etc. I bet there couldnt be a nickname derived fropm something else than food. Or his non appearance. IMHO he is the only our player who actually deserves a negative nickname.

May be it is a good idea to link Felton with homerism and give him a Springfield realted nickname. Or just "Springfield"?

I miss Brezec just because of this thread - that would be much more fun with him on the roster (Raptors fans' could tell).

McInnis can be called Keymaster to honor him because of the rumour of Sam Vincent locked away from players for a half break (there are saying Jeff actually did it).
