Hornets sign Devin Brown

Post#1 » by Copperhead » Fri Aug 22, 2008 4:51 pm

The Hornets have added veteran swingman Devin Brown to the roster, a league source said Friday, returning Brown to the team he for which he played in 2006-07 when the club was temporarily relocated to Oklahoma City.

I think I mentioned in a thread below that I somehow wouldn't be surprised if they did this. Not a bad pickup I guess but now they should try to get another big.

I really liked Devin when he was here last time, and I think this is a good signing, and he's a better fit than Bonzi IMO.

So we have Mo and Peja as the starters, with Posey, Wright and Brown coming off the bench, with Bowen playing spot duty.

We really need a PG right now, unless Mike James can step up, but he was pretty bad last year, so I'm not holding my breath.

Another pg would be nice but I wouldn't be surprised to see Brown play a little pg if needed. Also, don't be surprised if you see Julian playing a little point forward. Somebody told me they heard this mentioned on the evening news one night this week. I don't know how serious they were about it though. I think they need to go find another front court player and I think they will.

NEW ORLEANS -- The New Orleans Hornets turned to a familiar face to fill an opening in the backcourt, signing Devin Brown on Friday.

Brown, formerly of the Cleveland Cavaliers, played with New Orleans two seasons ago and was brought back to bolster the depth in the backcourt depth. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The move was made following the departure of backup guard Jannero Pargo, who joined a team in Russia.

Brown, 6-foot-5, likely will be the primary backup to All-Star point guard Chris Paul and will join recently signed James Posey as a backup shooting guard. Brown, like Posey, also can play forward.

"I'll be all over the place," Brown said. "I can play [both guard spots and both forward spots]. If I was a couple of inches taller I could probably play a little center."

I'm 50/50 on this one, sure hes versatile, but realisticly he'll play guard spots only w/ Posey and Wright healthy. I am a little concerned about him as our primary backup point guard, I thought his natural position was SG, so I'm not sold on him at PG. Atleast he knows the system, so chemistry-wise its a sound move.

I think if Devin Brown is the primary backup PG, we will be in trouble this year....

As of right now I think the primary backup pg is James. As of right now. Which means they still might be in trouble. But let's see how he does with a full training camp under his belt before we start damning the team.

I think the idea with our bench is flexibility, get players who can serve multiple roles so everyone is on their game and no-ones place is 100% secure.

I imagine if Mike James can revive some of the form we saw in Toronto he'd be first choice backup to CP3, otherwise Brown will likely get the minutes, he played starting point when Paul sprained his ankle 2 seasons ago and did a servicable job.

I think Ely will be first choice backup for West and Chandler and they'll likely rely on a 3 man at the 4 & 5 spots untill Hilton earns Scott's trust, unless they go small ball which has been hinted.

Posey and Wright will predominately play 2 & 3 off the bench, though when they go small ball Wright and Posey will do stints at 3 & 4, pushing Hilton further out of the rotation.

The Hornets may not even acquire another big, they left a roster spot open last year and only filled it when injuries happened, wouldnt be surprised if they did the same this year.

So my estimates, assuming Mike James gets the green light would be:

PG: Paul (34mins) / James (10mins) / Brown (4mins)
SG: MoPete (20mins) / Posey (20mins) / Brown (8mins)
SF: Peja (30mins) / Posey (8mins) / Wright (10mins)
PF: West (34mins) / Ely (8mins) / Wright (6mins)
C: Chandler (32mins) / Ely (12mins) / Armstrong (4mins)

That'd be my guess.

Good post. Rasual may even be servicable at least up until trade deadline. Ryan "Hustle Man" Bowen may also get garbage minutes.

Yea, Rasual could see alot of action at the start of the year if we're tryna ship him, we have a logjam on the wings right now.

I forgot about Bowen, hes a wild card coz B Scott obviously loves his intensity, so he may see more minutes than expected.

Alot rides on Mike James this season, it scares me to say that, but Posey/JuJu/Ely as our main scoring options off the bench isnt that promising, none can really create like James can.
