PJ Brown return?

Post#1 » by Celtics_85 » Tue Aug 26, 2008 6:04 pm

According to celticblog Jeff Howe of The Metro says that PJ Brown hasn't ruled out a possible return to the NBA. What do you think?

I think Scal can pack his **** and get on the first thing smoking.

But seriously if he was going to come back I would expect him to do the same thing he did last season. Sit out the first half of the year and then look to see if there was a role for him for the stretch run on a contender.

I would doubt a player who retires for non-health reasons completely rules out playing for some time after retiring.

I like the idea of him coming in after the all star break. Or if one of our big men goes down early he can supply 15+ mpg.

Agreed. This worked last year, so I don't see why it wouldn't this year.

O'Bryant can't be expected to contribute in a meaningful way to wins, so this would be a nice pickup. I hope its true.

I see this as a good Plan B if the POB experiment doesnt pan on.

As the roster is currently constructed, O'bryant will get his opportunity to play this year early on. Whether he decides he wants to make a living at this sport, is all up to him.

Yeah, it's a good thing to have O'Bryant around. Even if PJ comes back this year, you can't keep bringing back PJ every year, the man is old! So we need a prospect, and O'Bryant seems like a good fit. He's the only guy on our team who is officially 7', and he has shot blocking ability, and decent hands. Our roster is such that any passable center can look good playing with the big 3. For instance, throughout the playoffs we didn't face one team where Perkins would be the starting center, but on the celtics, he looked really good and had a couple of monster games. PJ benefited from the system as well, if you ask Bulls' fans, they have a very different opinion of PJ Brown.

Isn't Mourning still unsigned?

I think O'Bryant's contract indicates that he is expected to contribute - if he were just a developmental guy, it would be pointless cause if he got good in 2 years, he'd be a FA and we'd lose him anyway.

PJ was plenty good last year, but I think he had lost a step; it's not a given he'll be up to the task next year, but he might be worth a shot. Really does depend on POB. Someone needs to play the role PJ did last year, to some extent at least - there needs to be a tall big man who can contribute in certain situations.

Yes, but given that he is going to miss at least the first half of the season, I doubt anybody would sign him and be on the hook for a full season salary, even at Vet Min. He's wavered several times about whether he was finished as a player, it's not out of the question IMO that when he hits the gym again he'll realize how tough it will be to get in NBA shape to play out the string and call it a day.

Yup. Plus this leaves him with more in the tank during the playoffs, which is when we need it, not in December.

That's sweet! Although, how can anyone else be favored over us after the season we just had?

I think if you look at the numbers we probably have gotton a lot better. Many of our core group has improved and a lot.

We've added a lot of young players that can contribute in meaningful ways.

Our only real loss is Posey and he was a mixed blessing. He was a champion guru whom we needed last year. We were so inexperienced. However, his game was in decline.

So on balance we are a substantially improved team. LA is an improved team too if Bynum comes back healthy. But honestly, they weren't close last year in the finals.

While I certainly think it will be tough for us to repeat (as it is for any team) it is certainly not a long shot. As long as everyone stays healthy, watch out league!

We have a full roster, so I'm wondering about the possibility of Scal (1 yr left on contract) + young player as trading chip to do a 2 for 1 trade, then we can bring PJ in by the all star break.

If a player is on NBDL team, do they still count as one of 15 on the roster? I'm pretty sure our rookies will spend most of their year in NBDL and POB is far from a proven anything, so I think we'll definitely look to PJ Brown for some contribution this year too.

Although short, he definitely became one of my favorite players...

From what I remember, they still count as part of 15 man roster even if in dev league. I'd actually rather keep our rookies with the team this year. Giddens may get PT sooner rather than later. Walker would benefit from practicing with Pierce. If the team keeps up that killer instinct we'll have enough blowouts to get our young guys some garbage minutes.

Well, we have half a season to see how Danny gets PJ back for the playoff run. A lot can happen before then. I'm hoping a few disgruntled talents will be dangling out there by February and Danny will clean up again.

This is the way it ought to be. None of this I ope we get a good lotto pick. Bringing "normalcy" back into the world. it feels great.
