Sean Singletary vs Goran Dragic

Post#1 » by MaryvalesFinest » Mon Aug 25, 2008 11:58 pm

The Suns front office hyped up Dragic as the Suns pg of the future but does anyone think Singletary has a chance to be the Suns pg of the future and a better player than Dragic?

So just wondering what everyone thinks about Singletary and Dragic compared side by side, who do you think will be the better player, better defender, better point, etc?

Here's some youtube videos of each for comparisons

They're 22 and 23, and neither was able to crack the first round of the draft. No guarantees, but the odds say we're lucky if we get 1 quality player out of these 2. I'll hold off on any predictions until I see them actually play in the NBA. But everyone should keep in mind that both of these guys are old for rookies, and a lot closer to their ceilings than someone like Jerryd Bayless or Derek Rose.*

*Yes, jerks, I realize that it's unfair to compare two elite prospects to Dragic & Singletary, but those are the only two one-and-done guards this year that I could think of off the top of my head. And now that I think about it, if the front office is serious when they say that Dragic was their #2 PG in the draft, and a possible long-term successor to Steve Nash, then the Bayless comparison is not just fair, but warranted.

Training camp should be interesting for these two. I think Porter will be almost expected to experiment with several different combinations early on, all the while trying to shave some PT off of Nash's game.

Hard to say about being a PG of the future, but the Suns certainly seem to be confident that Dragic is their main backup PG of the immediate future. Keep on rolling the dice Kerr!

--- Whic brings up my question: if Dragic is really that good, the #2 PG prospect in the draft, why do you take Lopez at 15? Isn't the successor to Nash someone you take at your spot, if he's still there? i mean, if someone that good is there how do you pass him up and hope you can swing a deal in the second round to land him?
Not that I knock the Lopez pick, just that someone you really believe is the point guard of your future should surely be a guy you lock up asap, before you draft a backup centre.
Unless it was just the uncertainty of his contract in Europe that kept them from pulling the trigger.
Just something I been pondering.

for first round picks the nba has a cap set up for contracts but not for second rounder's.
which means suns could not have given dragic the contract to suplament his buy out of they took him in the first round

Good point. In addition, if you think Dragic is the #2 PG in the draft, but know he won't go in the first round, then you grab a guy at 15 who won't be available in the 2nd, then work on trading up in the 2nd (if necessary) to grab Dragic. Which is what the Suns did. If their player evaluations are right, they did a very nice job of draft optimization. (Note: most draft experts think the Suns over-valued both of their picks, so a lot really hinges on the Suns being smarter than everyone else.)

I think Barbosa will likely be getting those minutes most the year as well. I'm sure the coaches will try to play Dragic as much as they can early on but I just don't see him being able to run the show at this stage and he doesn't really offer much else if he can't control the offense.

Singletary looks quick. Reminds me a little of TJ Ford.

It would have been nice if we signed Livingston instead of trading DJ

Why are player so quickly deemed player of the future?

I heard DJ was to be Raja Bell of the future.

What about right now?

Who can do what needs to be done to win right now?
