I think verlander is a good reason why..

You don't give up on young pitchers.. After having a fantastic year last year, including a no hitter( I think it was last year) he has looked like hot garbage this year, including this struggling yankee team beating the crap out of him today and chasing him out in the 2nd inning. He has great, great stuff, but I guess these are the growing pains with young pitchers.. And maybe this is why we still need to be patient with guys like Hughes and even kennedy... Even with such a bad year, I think we all know what verlander can do, and Hughes has showed promise and the ability( last years playoff) to pitch on this level and in big situtions..

I am sure we can come up with other pitchers that struggled as youngstes, but verlanders numbers just jumped out at me today... I was like wow!! not too good.

verlander literally has no movt on his pitches....any1 can touch a straight fastball

phil hughes has nothing to challenge mlb hitters with, he gets no swings and misses and his location is nothing to write home bout these days....his injury history is a big concern too....and the fact that they wanted him to add a cutter to induce more groundballs shows he doesnt have tat ace stuff and is trying to develop other pitches to be a #3 at best rotation dude

ian kennedy is garbage with a attitude problem to boot, not a good combo.....he cant hit 90 on the gun and cant locate his pitches, in other words, he's more suited to be a hr derby pitcher

all these pitchers have major flaws that were overlooked when they were so hyped

I think you may be off on hughes, really off, I think hughes injuries have been his biggest problem, not his stuff.... As far as kennedy, I may have to agree with you to some extent.....

in other words, he's more suited to be a hr derby pitcher

I didn't see the game today, I was at my friend's sister's wedding. Verlander was phenomenal in his rookie year in 2006. He was considered a top of the line, number 1 pitcher. If I remember correctly he also pitched quite a few more innings than he should have that year. It's tough to say if he was abused and he won't ever be the same or if he was just over worked.

Hughes is a top of the rotation starter. He has the stuff and he has the mental makeup. His only problem has been staying healthy. After reading about how Ponson pitched today, I don't see how they don't give his next start to either Aceves or Hughes. -Jitpal
