When does Brandon Roy become a UFA?

I know his current rookie deal is up in 2 years or so, when will he be available on the free market?

I can answer this pretty easily: Never.

I think Roy is entering his 3rd season so he'll be eligible for his first extension next summer. No use in you dreamers to salivate over him because he's never going to up for grabs. Roy is in that class of guys you just don't let get away.

Never is the easiest answer. He's going to get his massive extension with Portland and it'll happen quick and easy. I doubt there will be any contract disagreements on either side. They know how much he's worth and he'll get re-inked.

He'll never be a UFA, not until his 30's at least.

He probably will be after the extension, that's usually what happens, rookies sign 1 extension to make bank in the same place, then are ready to branch out.

Hopefully never. I want him to retire as a Blazer.

I don't see Roy as becoming good enough to take advantage of opting out of his 2nd contract, so I could see him signing two long term extensions in Portland. Only the best sign two max contracts: LeBron, Paul, Wade, Howard, Kobe. That 2nd max contract for LeBron and Paul and co. will be around 6 years, $140-150 million.

He never will unless you gets corrupted by the spirit of the JailBlazers and plays like Kwame Brown.

Brandon Roy has an interesting take on money and being an NBA player.

The pressures of supporting an extended family, and the lure of lifelong security are two of the things Roy wrestles with as he enters his third season, during which he will be paid $3.084 million.

Roy is the 8th highest paid player on the Blazers, behind Channing Frye ($3.16 million), Martell Webster ($3.77), Travis Outlaw ($4.0), Steve Blake ($4.59), LaMarcus Aldridge ($4.63), Greg Oden ($5.01) and Joel Przybilla ($6.31).

But interestingly, Roy says he doesn't necessarily long for the big bucks, saying more money can lead to more problems.

When Roy does sign his big contract, he said he will probably buy his parents a larger home. Other than that, he doesn't know what he would do. His most ostentatious possession is a Maserati, which he demurely parks in his garage behind a closed door, while his Toyota Tundra sits on the driveway.

Its hard to say in Portland. They have too many good young players who are sill in their Rookie contract: They have Roy, Oden, Aldridge who is 6'11" and average almost 8/18 in his 2nd year, and you add Bayless this year. They can't afford 4 max contracts.....

The correct answer is "never".

Yes, yes we can.

I wish people would stop with this bull. Our owner is one of the richest men in the US. He's worth more than all the other owners in the league combined except for Cuban.

In the 2000-2001 the salary cap was 35 million. Care to guess our team's payroll? Around 80 million dollars.

Channing Frye, Martell Webster and Przybilla make more... ouch.

When the hell is Webster's contract up, seems like he's been in the NBA forever now, but still on a rookie contract.

Actually Cuban is not as rich as you might expect, in fact he is 8th in the league as of 04-05 but he has gone up since then.

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/basketba ... owners.htm

Unfortunately Uncle Paul has come about some hard times lately with his value dropping about $4billion since 04-05 as he is worth about $16billion this year and is only double the next highest owner, Mickey Arison of the Heat, has at $6.1 billion.

But overall yeah I agree with most of your post. Roy will never wear another uni other than Blazer scarlett and black. He is the unquestioned leader of the team, is from the NW, went to school in the NW and will retire in the NW.

I actually get the feeling that Roy will not ask for max $$, with the max being $17-18mill at the time, I would imagine he will ask for $15 or so. Assuming they all pan out I would offer:

Oden almost max $17-18mill with a $18-19 max
LMA $16mill with a $17-18 max
Roy $15mill with a $17-18 max
Webster $4mill
Frye $4mill
Bayless $6-7
TO $6-7
Rudy $6-7

I think when we lock down Oden, Roy and LMA the rest will fall in to line a little more.

Webster and Frye were both drafted in the 2005 draft. 6th and 8th, so their rookie scale contracts are both pro-rated on their draft slot and Roy was drafted 6th in the 2006 draft and even though the rookie scale was raised a little, it does not make up for the yearly increase in Webster and Frye's salary. As for Joel, he is on his 3rd contract, being drafted in 2000, after his rookie contract was up he signed with Portland did pretty well and then resigned a longer term deal just a few years ago. Some people think that it is a bad deal but we are paying a little over a mill over the MLE for a player of his caliber. He could easily start on half of the teams in the league and would be the 6th man on most others. He is a solid defender, shot blocker, and rebounder and teamed with Oden we have the best C rotation in the league, cause Amare is NOT a C.

Webster and Frye both have qualifing offers for next year whic means that they are both restricted FAs.
