Portion of Fanbase That Wants Packers To Fail
I wanted to get everyone's thoughts on this, since I've seen or heard several people talking about it in the post-Favre era. There is a decent portion of the fanbase that has said they would be fine with or even rooting for the Packers to fail this season, just so that TT can look bad and (hopefully in their eyes) lose his job.
To me, these people just are not Packer fans. It is more than fine to disagree with moves that management makes (hell, we're Bucks fans for the most part for God's sake), but in the end, you cheer the players to wins 100%, because they have zero to do with personnel decisions, outside of their individual play.
But I've been disgusted with the amount of people I've heard this from. Even the 1070 AM guy is sitting in this corner right now.
I just don't get the disdain. The Packers are young and talented, the future looks good. So TT is an emotionless robot that didn't bow to every Favre wish. I care more about the team he is putting on the field.
Go Packers.

If you are a true Packer fan you will root for the Packers every week. I don't care who the players are or who the GM is...is the jersey says Green Bay Packers on it I will be rooting for it.

Re: Portion of Fanbase That Wants Packers To Fail
if by "decent portion" you mean a handful of internet message board guys and a couple of calls to talk radio then yeah. I moved up 10 spots this year on the season ticket waiting list so I think the whole "Favre fans want the Packers to fail" thing is way overblown.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

Re: Portion of Fanbase That Wants Packers To Fail
I know more than a few people in my family alone, none of whom have ever gone near a msg board or listened to sports radio, that would love to see Rodgers get hurt, the Packers to lose ten games, and Thompson to get canned. These are people that have called themselves Packer fans for over 40 years and have been to dozens of games.
I don't get it, but there's a large number of them out there.

Re: Portion of Fanbase That Wants Packers To Fail
Maybe I'm over-generalizing, but I've spoken to quite a few and have heard quite a few call-ins in multiple media outlets saying the same thing. Mike Heller, the ESPN local radio guy in Madison has even said that a big part of him hopes the Packers crash and burn.
Many people have taken their disagreement with TT over the Favre situation and just completely bent everything else the man has done out of proportion.
And Rodgers is the man in the middle. The guy has some stones, and he's going to need them this year.

I don't want the packers to lose. I do want Tt fired. but I've wanted him fired for the last three years. All the guy really cares about is profit! he handled the favre drama wrong. he forced Mc Carthy to handle the media rather than doing it himself. it was his decision- he should have been the one to have the press conferences and field all the questions. the packers have twice as much money under the cap than the next football team, and what is TT's plan for that money? to put it in the bank for a future year and create financial flexibility. he had one of the best punters in the league. he looked good in the preseason, so he cut him and brought in one of the worst punters in the league the past three years.
I never want the packers to lose. but if they don't make the play-offs, I want TT out of the state of Wisconsin before 1 January 2009!

Re: Portion of Fanbase That Wants Packers To Fail
Its been said a miilion times but the Favre salad tossers who want TT fired are making the ultimate conradiction.
We've all seen or heard it,Its classic.
If you ask them why Favre threw 29 ints and looked washed up in 2005 they will tell you because Favre didnt have any good weapons to throw to.
Which is true but whos the guy who went out and got all those good weapons for Favre to throw to.
And like you pointed out DB 4-12 to 13-3 in 2 years, yea lets fire Ted.

I always want Pack to win. I don't think TT is the God some here believe but he's got us winning. Can't argue with that. This year and next will be telling. His future should have fully arrived by then. Can he improve team while replacing Woodson, Harris Clfton & Tauscher. He hasn't even replaced Wahle & Rivera yet with people that play to the level they did. How many years has it been? (You could argue Collins has yet to play to Sharpers level)
Some worship/hate Brett / some here worship/hate TT - All are mis-guided. But hey sports has become the pyschological transference of the masses. Like the Romans - its thumbs up or down.

I can't fathom this post at all...mind boggling. This is a guy who rebuilt an old dying team in three years, has created a ton of cap flexibility and you bitch about that? I see your awesome point, it was much more prudent to sign the likes of Joe Johnson and Clet Hunt to huge contracts, hell the incredibly intelligent portion of cheeshead nation would be tickled to death if Rivera and Wahle's huge mistaken contracts were still on the books. The punter comment is so beyond ludicrous it doesn't deserve an answer from any intelligent football fan.

Hmmmm how many teams that the GREAT Marco Rivera and the hall of fame bound Mike Wahle were on went 13-3?...................someone really has to tell me how you can win 13 games with absolutely horrible guards, and have the second best runner in the league the last half of the season.

Seriously? TT makes zero money from the leftover cap-space, that money is the NFL's profit I guess. If anyone would make money in that situation it would be the owner(which I don't think profits either in the NFL from cap space). So really, he is doing you a favor if you are a partial owner

Re: Portion of Fanbase That Wants Packers To Fail
I don't care one bit if some Packer fans have now turned into Jets fans or want to see Rodgers fail, that's their issue to now deal with, not mine.
I don't just accept as fact everything the Packers (MM/TT) said in the media or leaked to the media in regards to how everything shook out with Brett Favre and think it should have been handled better, but it is what it is and it's now over with. Favre is gone and i like Rodgers as a player and person, so he's now the QB i'll cheer hard for because he plays for the team i love.
If some fans want to hold a grudge and dump now cheering for the Packers, more power to them, it's their life. Come Monday night though, i won't be joining them or caring if they now dislike the Packers. I'll have a few friends come over, down some drinks, and hope the Packers whip up on the Queens in glorious HD.

What's your trip? I said none of the Gs we've had since have played to the level they HAD played (or were playing when released) - Rivera was a Pro bowler & many felt Wahle was. Sure they declined - duh. No kidding - do you want an award for figuring that out?
I was talking about play of current Gs in comparison AND whether we have gotten back to previous quality - NOT rehashing argument of whether they should have been released or signed or whatever. But you love to argue about the past. Ring the bell - xtitan jerks.
OK so you claim our current Gs are great. Better than Wahle or Rivera EVER played. That run game that STUNK 1st half of last season became better not b/c of Grant OR defenses respecting passing game that was successful despite putrid running - but b/c of our OL? Yes the OL got better at run blocking (couldn't get worse) but the change IMO was Grant and also b/c our passing was so hot defenses had to loosen up on run a little to stop it.
So my point is I am not satisfied with the Play of our Gs so far. I bring up past G play not to say we should have kept them but as comparison to what I consider the quality of play I hope for and was demonstrated in past. Sitton is new and I feel may make a big impact and be our best G. I hope.

Re: Portion of Fanbase That Wants Packers To Fail
We have to remember that one can be critical of aspects of the team and still be a fan. I was a fan through the Devine/Starr/Gregg/Infante years.
Have some people jumped shipped now that Favre is gone? Sure. There will always be fair weather fans that jump from team to team depending on who's winning and where their favorite players are playing. That's not new. Hell, there were tons of people around the country who became Packer fans for those very reasons. It happens in all sports.
Many of you have only been around since Favre played and don't remember how bad it was before then. No one outside Wisconsin was a Packer fan. No players from other teams wanted to play here. It was a badly run franchise that didn't win.
So being critical of a team doesn't mean you aren't a fan. Last week I made a comment that I thought Rodgers TD pass to Jennings was "lucky" and I was jumped on as a Favre fanatic/Packer hater. It was ridiculous.
99% of the people who wanted Favre to stay in Green Bay will hope he does well with the Jets AND hope the Packers win every game.

What do they all have in common? All current Packer starters brought in by Ted Thompson since he came in as GM in January 2005. We could probably add 3 eventual starters to this list...
James Jones
Aaron Rouse
Josh Sitton
Among the players Thompson acquired as vice president of football operations for the Seattle Seahawks, 2000-04:
Steve Hutchinson
Matt Hasselbeck
Shaun Alexander
Grant Wistrom
Michael Boulware
Marcus Trufant
Darrell Jackson
What boggles my mind is how anyone can look at the above lists, take a moment to consider how talented each of those guys is and how important they are to their team's winning ways, and still not admit how lucky we are to have TT as our GM. He built the core of the Seattle team that made it to the Super Bowl a couple years ago. In three years he built the Packers into a Super Bowl contender. If you won't take my word for it, listen to what Bob Harlan and Ron Wolf have said about TT:
"It helped me a great deal when I called Ron and he said absolutely, Ted Thompson," Harlan said. "Ron had said, 'If I was ever starting a scouting department from scratch today, my first hire would be Ted Thompson.' And as you know, I rely a great deal (on Wolf). He's still my consultant."
Told that SPORTING NEWS had selected Ted Thompson as its George Young NFL Executive of the Year, Ron Wolf was not surprised.
"If I had told you before the season that the Packers would go 13-3 and make it to the NFC title game, you would've sent me to the loony bin," says Wolf, the Packers' former general manager who hired Thompson in 1992 as assistant director of pro personnel. "Ted understands every aspect of how an organization works. That's why he was able to put together a winning team so quickly."

Re: Portion of Fanbase That Wants Packers To Fail
I know many people who want to see Rogers fail, TT fired, and for the Jets to outperform the Packers. I've gotten into arguments at bars about it to the point where I had to walk away because the other guy was threatening me. If you bring up his failures in the playoffs among his years with too many interceptions they think you're a complete and blind fool for not thinking it was someone else's fault.
The Favre-Bots are simply too much to handle for me. As far as what I feel about the subject, everyone has pretty much covered it. You simply aren't a packer fan if you're rooting for anyone in the franchise to fail.
And I hate the argument that Favre gives us a better chance to win and it's a win now league. I could understand if Favre had like 3 or 4 rings, and he was great in the playoffs. then I'd maybe sing a different tune. But the guy has choked and cost us too many big games for me to assume he will be able to not only bring us back to the NFC championship game, but win and go to the super bowl.

Re: Portion of Fanbase That Wants Packers To Fail
I guess the ultimate test would be....
Imagine a scenario where Greeb Bay and the NY Jets both have miraculous seasons and play each other in the Super Bowl. If you hope that Brett wins one last game to prove his greatness and stick it to TT, you are not a Packer fan. I can imagine maybe 10-15% of our fan base being happy with such an outcome. If you are a Favre fan over a Packer fan, please start wearing Jets jerseys so I know who to shun.
I love Brett, but Reggie White and the posse he brought with him, Sean Jones, Eugine Robinson, Seth Joyner, Santana Datson, Andre Rison.. etc are just as responsible for our SB win as he is. Fact is we may have won the Super Bowl with Makowski that year as well. White made GB a desired destination for Vets that wanted a ring much more than Favre ever did.

Re: Portion of Fanbase That Wants Packers To Fail
First off, some of the most passionate fans that I have seen are very unhappy with how this summer was handled, and frankly, they have a right to be upset.
The fact that our General Manager couldn't put his own spite aside for the betterment of the team, and the fans still boggles my mind.
Winning right now should be the most important thing, and this past summer, it was an after thought.
Has Thompson done a good job building this team? You bet. I think the majority of fans believe that. Has he made mistakes? Also true. no one is perfect, and no one expects him to be. However, he put himself out on an island by decisions he made. He had a top level QB and a top level DE that wanted to come here to take a shot at a Super Bowl. Instead of wanting to take that shot for a year, he choose to blow it up. History will judge him, and who knows, many including myself will have a lot of crow to eat.
Bottom line is that nothing short of a NFC championship game this season will be a failor. That is a lot to throw at a young QB. We have a lot injuries, ones that if we are not winning, I don't think the players will play through them. This is going to be a tough year.
Don't tell me I am not a real fan because I dislike moves that were made. Frankly, while it was an ugly summer, there have been worse. Wonder what the message boards would be like now if a team like the Browns just left? Or a team moves in the dark of the night out of town? How would you like to be those fans?
I have a right to my opinion, as do those that believe the oppisite. I won't tell them they're wrong, and if you don't want to hear us say, "I told you so" don't listen....but don't call us non-fans because we don't agree with you. Last I checked this was America, and your name isn't Stalin.
