OT: Chalmers and Arthur in trouble

Post#1 » by BassMaster » Wed Sep 3, 2008 7:44 pm

Former members of the Kansas Jayhaws' NCAA championship team Mario Chalmers of the Miami Heat and Darrell Arthur of the Memphis Grizzlies were dismissed from the NBA's Rookie Transition Program on Wednesday morning after being caught in their hotel room at Doral Arrowwood in Rye Brook, N.Y., with marijuana, according to sources.

"Yes, they were sent home for violating program rules," NBA spokesman Brian McIntyre said.

According to a source, the players were also fined $20,000 each and will begin the season on the suspended list.

How dumb can they be I mean considering where they both were in the first place.
Wow stupid.

Looks like they had weed and women over in their hotel room. A big no no in an NBA event that is kind of like a retreat. Also, Beasley was in the room with them when they had weed but they said he was uninvolved....i wonder how true that is....

I wonder if Lee is at this rookie program event?

Is it mandatory? Are all the rookies there at the same time? Too many questions?

I can't wait until the ignorant people that see pot as something that is going to ruin a life or cause harm on someone finally realize how wrong they are. Chances are it won't happen...but damn.

That being said...it IS still illegal...and for them to bring it to their rookie transition camp is just idiotic. If you are going to smoke...smoke OUTSIDE the hotel. Not in it. Just go take a drive down the road and back...damn it ain't that hard guys. You are NBA players...pay off a limo driver or SOMETHING.

Frustrates me when people take opportunities and blessings for granted. Hopefully CLee is nowhere near that hotel room. Plus, Beasely does look kind of high.

While mostly correct (re: as a carbon-based plant, smoking pot can have negative effects and it does contain carcinogens) - the timing was pretty darn stupid.

That being said...it IS still illegal...and for them to bring it to their rookie transition camp is just idiotic. If you are going to smoke...smoke OUTSIDE the hotel. Not in it. Or, I don't know, how about waiting until after the event ends? What is it, 3 or 4 days? Couldn't you wait? I mean, it's not addictive, right?

It does make one wonder if Arthur slipping was due to something like this rather than a potential health issue.

This is going to become the stuff of legend. They could both go on to be multi-time All-Stars, win MVP awards, make the All-NBA teams every year, break all kinds of records, but still, when people talked about them, it wouldn't be long before someone uttered "Remember when Chalmers and Arthur took weed and hookers to an event when they tell you not to indulge in weed and hookers?"

Marijuana, unlike tobacco, is only carcinogenic if its burned. If one was so inclined, there are gamut of other ways to partake. Also, THC has been clinically proven to dramatically reduce the risk of strokes later in life. Look it up. Not saying that I'm an advocate, just presenting the facts as they are.

Also, I don't think that this will bog down either player's career, assuming they both work hard, continue to improve, and stay out of trouble in the future. In the end Vince Coleman is the greatest base stealer of all-time, not the one-time coke-head who stole some bases. Charles Oakley told the NYPost that 60% of NBA players use marijuana. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was busted for possession in 1998, then again in 2001. Abdul-Jabbar told the media that he uses the herb for medical reasons, because it helps alleviate the nausea from his severe migraine headaches. Who talks about that?

it's all great and grand, but health effects are of no concern in this matter (for the most part)...there is really no need in arguing this aspect of the use...regardless of what it may or may not do to ones body, it is illegal, it is also against team policies and it violates rules set in place by the NBA...that totals up to at least 3 levels of violations...

The day it become legal, this will be of no issue, as the league could then care less...the teams may continue to stress to their players that the use of the drug is prohibited during the season, just like they try and do with alcohol...because let's get real here, an advocate for the drug or not, you surely know that it has the ability to effect judgment, coordination, focus and ability to compete on a professional level, effects may vary per case but each user will experience at least one aspect of the drug which can/will effect their play as an athlete which would explain why hardcore body freaks would never use it or any other drug.

in addition, as instant role models, these guys getting busted for the use/possession of an illegal substance feeds into the perpetual cycle of today's youth. Hey it's ok for me to smoke weed/buy weed/sell weed even though it's illegal, XYZ does it and he's a pro basketball player. Or, I can smoke this all I want and still get a crack a million dollars, and if I get caught breaking the law, hopefully I'm good enough that everyone will forget about it...

if having 6 pillows on your bed was against the law, I would feel the same way...it's silly yes, but it's against the law, so don't do it...period...if you do, you suffer the consequences...

Where can I put a little quote: "Your move creep"
You're sounding like Robocop man, and it's not a good thing. I have relatives in law enforcement but I've learnt over the years not everything that's prohibited by law must be avoided at all costs.

oh well...it's just how it is...I don't break the law because I have too much to live for and cannot afford to....it has nothing to with my thoughts on pot, personally I dont care about the stuff, I dont use it, but thats my choice...breaking the law is breaking the law...punishments hardly ever fit the crime, but that is not my fault...write your senator...I'm entitled to my opinion, and that's what it is...
