Predict your Packer "breakout player" 2008

Post#1 » by xTitan » Thu Sep 4, 2008 2:43 am

I am bored and sick of all the negative stuff, which I often have a role in, trying to turn over a new leaf and be positive. Every year it is always fun to predict a player you think will really elevate his game, in the past I have been quite good with last year being a big exception, I thought Cullen Jenkins was going to have a phenominal season last year, I was definitely wrong, he looked so good playing the DE at the end of the 2006 season, plus looked good last pre-season....but I was wrong.

I think this year a few players could jump up, I think Poppinga has come a long way and could elevate his game this year, Hawk is another player, if allowed to use his gifts, could make a huge leap. My pick to really step up his game is...................Atari Bigby. Bigby had some isuues, a lot of issues, with interference penalties and quite frankly stupid penalties in general early on, but as the season went on and once he got to the playoffs, I saw a very physical safety emerging who was not afraid to lay on a big hit. It has been awhile since GB had an impact safety, this boring Sanders defense does not highlight safety play, but I think Bigby has a chance to stand out.

I've got Johnny Jolly. I was very impressed with his hand and foot quickness last season, and he is out this year to prove that last year was no fluke on the DL. I think he puts the drug issues behind him and dominates this year.

Right behind him is Hawk. I think he puts it all together this year and they enhance his talents more with blitzing.

Just a gut feeling but I'll go...

1 - Nick Collins
2 - Tramon Williams
3 - Aaron Rodgers

Im with Xtitan on Atari Bigby,Bigby realy came on late last year and I think he'll pick up in 2008 where he left off at the end of last season and continute to build on that.

My 2nd guy would be Tramon Williams.

All Bigby's got to do is continue to watch the mental meltdowns. The guy was the NFC Defensive Player of the Month in December. No reason he couldn't be a real force.

You all have already named guys i have high hopes for, but i also have a good feeling that if Will Blackmon can stay healthy, he'll bring lots of excitement back to punt returns, he's got natural return instincts and is an explosive athlete. I see him breaking at least one for a TD and getting close on a few others for big gains. I'm also curious to see how he develops at CB in dime packages. Blackmon has good size, is fluid, and can run. Whether he has the needed corner instincts to make a leap though i'm not as sure or confident about yet.

Jolly is the guy though that if i could pick one that would help the team most if he made a big leap

Tramon Williams. Once he starts to get his technique down, he'll be a very good corner in this league.

Desmond Bishop.

When the Pack starts running the 3-4 in week 5, he'll prove invaluable. Guy is a beast. Unleash him, Bob Sanders!

Long shot - dependent on opportunity -
Aaron Rouse -
IF Collins gets hurt and misses 2 games in a row - Rouse won't go back to bench.

Packers won't be shifting to the 3-4 midseason.

Lots of good suggestions here already, so I'll add another name not mentioned yet. It may take a few weeks, but once he heals up and gets acclimated the Packers were expecting Josh Sitton to turn into a real road grader. Kevin Smith is a talented running back, but Sitton also played a big role in UCF rushing for 235 yards per game last year.

Rodgers should be the clear winner. No one will have more opportunities and he hasn't done anything to date to speak of so he should definatly break out. I think Lumpkin could do some damage if Grant doesn't heal up soon.

Tramon Williams - He's looked great all summer. I expect a couple big pick 6's from him this season.

I'll go with Lumpkin. He will be killer on 3rd down screens since he is so shifty and seems to be hard to take down on first contact,

- Aaron Rouse into Nick Collins' starting spot
- Greg Jennings as a superstar - both locally and nationally
- Aaron Rodgers in the eyes of the media
- AJ Hawk as a standout
- I would have picked Jolly also, but his off the field problems seemed to have distracted him in preseason and we don't have the depth to keep the big boy fresh

I really like Rouse, but for some reason I think this is the year that the light goes on for Collins. I think he has a really steady season for the Packers, minimizes the mistakes and comes up with some big turnovers.

I'm not sure he has enough electricity considering he scored a 10 on the Wonderlic.
