Retire Nick Anderson's #25?

Post#1 » by Point forward » Wed Sep 3, 2008 9:32 pm

I am neutral towards the Magic, and I find it a bit odd that a franchise with so many remarkable players (shortlived also, but you get the point) still has no "real" retired jersey apart from #6. You don't like Shaq that much, T-Mac also bolted, and Penny was unlucky AND he was traded. D12 is not there yet. So, what about this guy?

NIck and Darrell are the most likely candidates out of all the players in the team's history. Nick was here for a decade and was the teams first draft pick. Darrell was the heart of the team for almost a decade. Both popular and well liked. I am still not sure that they did enough on the court to warrant their jersey being retired. When i think of a jersey being retired i think of them being one of the best players in the league in their time.

It gets discussed every year...and it never happens. I think once we win a title we will start to look back and honor our past.

I believe Nick Anderson will eventually be retired or at least I'd like him too, perhaps once we get in the new arena. Nick Anderson does represent the first overall pick, like said, and was a key part in the Magic's success. He is a well-liked player and person it seems. Not to mention he still serves as a community ambassador for the Magic. I guess it's a wait and see type thing, although we've already held a tribute to him in 2006 if I recall correctly.

I really would like Nick have his 25 retired. I felt really sorry for him after *that* game, and he took it HARD. Nick was a .750 FT shooter and then struggled to shoot .400 :o But it happens to the best, just ask guys like Karl Malone, Lebron or even Dirk...

Hopes so, I like Nick. But there's always that argument, what he accomplished on the court isn't that remarkable to get a jersey retired. However, I feel he should, he love this team and he was with us through the thick and thin.

Don't expect anything until the new arena is built.
I don't think we have anyone that truly deserves their jersey retired, but Nick would be #1 option no doubt with Darrell a close 2nd.

I disagree with retiring his jersey. Of course, if it happened I'd be happy for him, but I'd rather the Magic didn't do it.

I prefer saving jersey retirements for star players, or at least players who played 10+ seasons with one team and made a couple of all-star games and/or were a big part of a championship. Basically, Anderson doesn't have enough intangibles in my book. Dwight Howard would be a current candidate if he stays on with the Magic.

I've said this many times in the past - the Magic should create a Magic Hall of Fame or a Ring of Honor of some type. Instead of retiring the jerseys of popular players like Anderson or Armstrong, they can still be recognized for their accomplishments and have their names displayed prominently somewhere in the arena.

How can you say no? He was our first draft pick and look at his name on our all-time lists.

I say no. He just wasn't good enough. I know he's an important part of our history, but he didn't even make an All-Star game. It seems wrong to retire a guy like Nick's jersey, but not retire Penny's (who was here 6 seasons).

My problem is on good teams, Nick was never the Magic's best player.

i still don't think it should be a question he was our franchise player a fan favorite a team leader, and he is still with the team, he has done so much for the magic, the magic should return the favor

Retiring a jersey just for the sake of retiring a jersey is poor form. We've only been around for 19 years. That's not even the span of two full player careers (assuming the player stops playing due to age). Nick was a good player and does represent a huge part of our past. But he never made an All-Star game, he never won a ring, and he didn't offer the kind of consistent excellence I think you need to have your jersey retired.

Retiring a jersey just to decorate the rafters belittles the team.

Absolutely...

Doesn't matter if he was the best player ever. He was the best player ever to play 10+ seasons. That IMO deserves the honorific.

Plus... People tend to forget the seasons after penny left and he was averaging 6.0/rpg 3.4/apg 1.6/spg 0.7/bpg and 19.9/ppg :o
