for real???? cavs are already old upfront with Z and wallace. why would we add another old dude. he couldnt even stay healthy last year and wasnt productive on the hawks at all. now 5 years ago id be all for it but this year noooo!

Yeah, the dude is old. However, we will likely only sign him for the minimum for 1 year. He will probably only get 8-10 minutes per game anyway. We just need another big to keep Hickson from playing 20 plus. This move will move him down to around 16 while keeping Wallace fresher. Personally, I would rather get Juwan Howard as long as we're paying the same for both.

Cavs close to signing veteran Wright?

Post#3 » by Hydroponic3385 » Thu Sep 4, 2008 2:59 am

Looks like the Cavs may sign PF/C Lorenzen Wright for the veteran's minimum: http://www.ohio.com/sports/cavs/27840229.html

My take...

Positives:
--can play PF or C
--veteran presence
--injury/foul trouble insurance for our bigs
--can grab some boards
--won't get in the way of JJ's development
--likely for the vet minimum

Negatives:
--significantly gone downhill the last year or two - does he have anything left at all?
--not a scoring replacement for Joe (maybe we're hoping JJ will be?)

And no matter what, this is obviously not a huge deal so it shouldn't be too scrutinized. There's barely anything to choose from for free agents, and I'm guessing Ferry doesn't want to part with Snow's contract unless we get something nice back. At least we can go into the season with a little more depth for our bigs, and still hold onto our main assets (Wally and Snow's contracts, Andy, Sasha, perhaps a West S&T).

Looks like the signing is official:

I just wanted to say that even though Wright probably won't see any meaningful time this year, he's a great guy to have on the bench. He only played a few minutes total for the Kings, but he was always energetic and supportive of the other players. Kind of like Mateen Cleaves lite. That was really classy of him, and I wish him luck.

Example:

After Hawes' dunk, Wright is the most enthusiastic guy on the bench, even though Hawes took what was left of his minutes.

He's most likely our new Dwayne Jones - a 5th big who will hopefully grab some boards and score a couple easy buckets when he's played. Ultimately he'll just be depth insurance and like posted above, an enthusiastic guy on the bench for the team.

Yeah, I would rather trade for Dwight, too...

Come on, who cares? There is not exactly many options for minimum salary bigs...you take what's left and hope he won't need to see the floor much.

He's also a smart, respectable defender. Has good size. Particularily he has had success defending against Dwight Howard 2 or 3 times when he was with the Hawks.

Fine guy to have deeper on the bench for what he can do.

well i mean hes better then dwayne jones. i couldnt stand it when he came into the game. so i guess thats a plus. id rather have wright on the floor then jones so i guess its not the worst thing ever. i just dont want jones to see another min with the cavs again. not bashing him as a person or anything i just think he has no skills at all.
