'88 Slam Dunk Contest - Was 'Nique Robbed???

Post#1 » by The Main Event » Fri Aug 22, 2008 2:18 pm

Did Nique get robbed of the '88 Dunk Title? After the contest, Spudd was quoted as saying to Nique, "Hey, check your wallet." He said this because he felt, along with many others, that Nique had been robbed of a dunk title that year. This is how the final round went down...

"Dominique’s first dunk of the finals was maybe the best dunk of the night. His head was as high as the rim and his body was several feet away. I remember not being that impressed when I saw it the first time (the view from behind him), but then staring dumbfounded upon seeing the slow-motion replay (from the side).

Jordan’s double-clutch reverse that followed was more power than you’re used to seeing from him. Wilkins’ windmill from the right baseline was pure Dominique.

Jordan... a two-handed rock the cradle dunk from the right... poetry in motion... 47... What?

I was as pissed as that guy in the stands waving his arms at the judges and when ‘Nique threw down the two-handed windmill, I though it was over… 45… ROBBED! Michael has a shot.

He hesitated again, dribbling around the court for a while. As a fan, you wanted to see something new, but then he started to back up. He had started off the second round with a free-throw line dunk, receiving a 50. So he was going back to what worked. He started down the runway, stepped just in front of the free-throw line, took off and... missed the dunk.

That wasn’t supposed to happen.

Jordan did not miss the second try though, and although he had done the free-throw line dunk before, you had to love the flair that he did it with, cocking the ball back in mid-air and kicking his feet out to the sides. Watching it in slow motion inspires everyone who ever played or watched the game of basketball. It was a beautiful sight.

50. "

The All Star game was at the old Chicago stadium, so obviously the fans were all over MJ's scrotum. How did MJ get a 50 for a dunk that he did in the 2nd round, let alone the year before? Keep in mind that the judges were made up of a bunch of old timers. One guy was a retired NFL player, who probably knew very little on the art of dunking. I realize that MJ's free throw line dunk was one of the most memorable dunks of all time, but come on. Creativity, anyone?

Personally, i think that Nique was robbed. Do u?

And doing the same dunk that you did in a previous round is better? I dont care what the level of difficulty, theres no way you get max points in the creative category.

I don't give points for doing windmills either, doesn't matter if they're from different angles or 1 hand or 2 hands or 3, its still a windmill. Windmills are dumb, thats why the Netherlands piss people off so much

ROFL while thinking about hissy fit that J23F/Jordans_Bulls are going to have about this...

And yes, IMHO Nique was robbed and MJ got a homer call. But I don't even care about Slam Dunk Contest to argue anyway.

BTW, it was second time when Wilkins was robbed, after that Nate... I mean, Spud Webb incident. It must be all-time record of Slam-Dunk Contests, right?

I wouldn't say he was robbed, I believe they were equal and Jordan used the advantage of being at home.

Exactly. He was breaking the mold with the monstrous windmills that he was doing.

Have about what?

Anyway, I don't care too much about dunk contest or 3 pt shootouts, just show me what you do in the actual games.

Wow, so there's a hope: it's hard to believe, but your like 8000 polls here (actually rather 2000 since on average you're repeating every poll 4 times) plus 4000 pro-Jordan posts finally actually contributed to your basketball knowledge. ;-)
20 000 polls more and maybe you'll get why saying "if Team X won the series vs. Team Z, then Team Y which defeated Team X, would certainly roll over Team Z" is simply (Please Use More Appropriate Word). ;-)

Is it really necessary to take a swipe at him?

The Cradle dunk was the best thing, that alone was worth it. That's real poetry in motion.

MJ's final FT line dunk didn't deserve 50, maybe 48.
But his Cradle dunk was a definite 100% 50. So in the end, it evened out, so yeah, nick didn't get robbed.

Yeah he got robbed but ASG stuff doesn't really matter enough to not give the hometown fans what they want.

As far as windmills go, I've still never seen an NBA player throw down a two handed windmill like Nique could.

I was just watching this contest this morning..

the 80's judging was absolutely terrible..Dr.J and Dominique got A LOT of reputation judging in some of the dunk contests I was watching today..other guys were doing nicer dunks, but would get rated lower than both of them, especially Dominique..

btw, LOL @ Ralph Simpson being in one of them..
