I'm still failing to see why you keep commenting on the poor D. We bring back every starter from last year, and almost all of them are either young and improving or in their prime. I would actually like to see the overall numbers for the #1 D without Pickett and Hawk in the preseason, my guess would be it was pretty good.

Our OL vs. the Vikings pass rush is a much bigger concern than the D in this game.

Detroit won all 4 pre seasons game and some think they looked real good doing it....how did they do yesterday? The Bears looked terrible in there pre season games, guess that really doesn't tell the story does it.

I'm speaking about our #1 D while it was in only, not the outcome of the game or the defense as a whole. I'm more questioning where the claim that our defense is in trouble is coming from? They return all the starters from last year. Yes, a couple guys are dinged, but there are other teams out there with similar injury situations.

As long as Pickett and Hawk are 100% relatively soon, is anyone else really that concerned about the D? If so, why?

Technically speaking Corey Williams was a starter who is gone. Jolly and Cole are both coming off season ending injuries, Pickett hasn't played, our safeties are question marks. KGB hasn't played at all. Jolly and Jenkins have been incredibly inconsistent all off season and most of their careers.

Jolly started last year, and he was the starter when our D was playing it's best football. Pickett hasn't played, but he's not missing any games. Even if he's not 100% tonight, he will be shortly after getting some practice. Safeties are the same as last year. KGB is ready to go. Jenkins is much healthier than last year, he was nursing injuries the entire season.

Packers were 6th in scoring D and 11th in yards D last year. Unless you are expecting severe dropoff from identical personnel, you're looking at a top 10 defense again.

Now, there are more concerns for DEPTH on defense (mainly DT), but I'm talking about the starters and guys who will be seeing the field here (11 starters + KGB + Tramon).

I'm hearing that Hawk is likely out but that he's fighting big time to play. I do know he's not 100%. Might as well hold him out than have an injury that could linger. Hell it's already lingered a month.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

Which is why I am glad the 49ers were dead set on not being embarrassed by Aaron Rodgers in the second preseason game and brought everything but the kitchen sink in blitz packages. If they hadn't, Rodgers might have had the game tonight he did vs. the 49ers, but I am hoping now he'll be better prepared for the pressures and get the ball out quickly.

Emphatic declaration

By BOB McGINN

I seriously hope we weren't supposed to predict McGinn's Tuesday headline. "Emphatic declaration"?! You don't even see titles that lame on the History Channel. Emo McGinn's been reading too much Jane Austen lately.

Bob, I am a lifetime fan of your writing, but "Emphatic Declaration"? That sounds like a Jane Austen novel.
