OT: Why do athletes wait to have surgery?

Post#1 » by BassMaster » Mon Sep 8, 2008 9:45 pm

I can't figure out why some wait until the season is getting ready to start and announce they are going to have surgery. This event happens in all of pro sports, Kobe is the latest example of waiting until the last minute.
So what do y'all think about this?????

Except once in a while it backfires.
Basketball is driven by three principles:

1) Movement 2) Application of fundamentals 3) Predictability

kobe delayed his surgery in the season b/c he didnt want to miss out on 6+weeks of regular season games, he had to further delay due to the playoffs and he had to delay it even further b/c he wanted to play in the olympics
2 weeks later, he plans to have the surgery

It has been how many weeks since Beijing and he already knew what had to be done. It would have made more sense that right after the Olympics to have the surgery then to wait just before the season begins. That begs the question why did he wait. The Spurs are going through the same thing. I see it time and time again and you just have to wonder why.

its human evolution for males to compete. our ancestors thousands of years ago gave us males this competition gene (competing for women so we can reproduce and spread our genes)..us males compete all the time, sometimes without even knowing it (video games, sports, etc.)thats a big part of why alot of atheletes (especially males) will wait for a surgery to compete and win a championship

Alot of the time is purely because players, not just basketball players, dont want to miss the buisness end of the season. Its often when the most important games are [cup finals, fighting for team position, playoff's and so on and so forth].

Since often they can get most of the recovery done in the offseason, and most see missing training camp/start of the season as less damaging that missing the ends of seasons.

I think a basketball player did this aswell a couple of seasons ago, but I remember 2 seasons ago Michael Ballack of Chelsea got absolutely slated because he opt'd to take surgery 2 months b4 the end of the season, and miss the rest of the potential title run in, rather than wait 2 months till the season was up.

Thief, do you have any theories?

I would say that most guys want to avoid getting cut on because they are concerned it will weaken that area in the long run (it won't be as strong as it originally was pre-injury and pre-surgery). And they hope if they wait, it eventually will heal.
