Re: MMA WEC
I like WEC a lot, just because of the fights in the lower weight classes. Because there isn't much competition in North America for fighters at 135 and 145, the WEC has a great stable of fighters in each of those weight classes. Faber and Torres are both the best in the world at their weight classes.
They have some good fighters in other divisions (Condit at WW, Filho at MW), but sometimes I wonder why they even bother. It would serve a purpose if it was more of a minor league system for the UFC, but they seem intent on keeping them separate for the most part.
If they are planning a big debut for Mexican TV, I can't think of a better matchup than Miguel Torres vs. Manny Tapia. I believe Tapia was next in line for a title shot anyway.

Re: MMA WEC
The bigger weight classes, I believe Middleweight and Light Heavyweights, are going to be folded into the UFC. This time next year the biggest fighters are going to be welterweights.
The WEC events always surprise me by their entertaining fights. Because they are the lower weight classes and because they are pretty much the only organization in America that caters to the weight classes under lightweight, they have the pickings of America. And word out of Japan is that DREAM might be in some financial hotwater so basically, you've got the WEC and World Tour Victory that would be players for these smaller fighters in 6-12 months. This could be a major boon for the WEC's stable of already strong lighter fighters. Be very happy that you got the WEC Mamba, it's my second favorite promotion (definitely better than EliteXC and I won't judge Affliction until I see a few cards). mahalo

The WEC has been amazing.
Shame on the UFC for not even having a 155 division for 2-3 years.

WEC's 170lb + divisions are nothing to talk about. 155 has a lot of entertaining fights and matchups but no elite fighters. Its all about 135 and 145 though... some of the best in the world and highly entertaining.

Re: MMA WEC
I agree with everything except the "no elite fighters in the 155 division" comment. I truly feel that Jamie Varner is very close to being a top 5 LW. He has incredible wrestling as shown by his ability to get back on his feet in the Hicks fight, and we all know about his stand up. His condtioning is 2nd to none, and he comes from the no.1 rated camp in the U.S. per winning percentage. Varner will be the UFC LW champ before 2010.jTF2 wrote:WEC's 170lb + divisions are nothing to talk about. 155 has a lot of entertaining fights and matchups but no elite fighters. Varner has potential, but come on. You're pretty much saying that he's going to be the UFC LW champ within 4 or 5 fights. The biggest win on his resume is Razor Rob McCullough, and he's beating BJ Penn?
He's still not even close to top 10, IMO. Probably somewhere between 15 and 20, and I think that's being more than fair.

Re: MMA WEC
I made that comment with the thought that BJ will not be fighting in the LW division by next year. Jamie's handlers said themselves that he is not ready for Penn, but any other LW can come get some. I would like to see Jamie and KenFlo that would be great proving ground for Varner. Btw his next fight is the the winner of the Razor/Cowboy fight.CPT wrote:El Hardee wrote:I agree with everything except the "no elite fighters in the 155 division" comment. Fair enough. I think BJ will still have the LW Championship until someone beats him for it, and if someone does, then I'd pick that guy to beat Varner 99 times out of 100. I really hope that the GSP vs. Penn fight is a 5 round non-title superfight, but that's not the UFC's style. Anyway, that's besides the point. I think Varner would be in for a rough night against BJ, Sherk, Griffin, Stevenson, and Florian, but I wouldn't mind seeing those fights. I'd be more interested in seeing him against the likes of Huerta, Guida, Edgar, Maynard, Tavares, or Franca, and I think he would have to be considered the underdog in any of those fights. This is without even mentioning the LW talent in Japan, like Gomi, Hansen, Aoki, Kawajiri, Ishida, Alvarez, Uno, Shaolin, etc and guys like Melendez and Thomson over here. Varner needs a real test before I put him in the same league as the guys I mentioned (and I could even be forgetting a few).

WEC signed Wagnney Fabiano, the IFL FW Champ. Big pickup for them.

Steve Steinbeiss, and Aaron Simpson are also fighting that night, both whom I train with. And Tim Mckenzie who also once trained at Arizona Combat is fighting. War AZCS!

Re: MMA WEC
So none of the fighters get paid in the case of a cancellation. These guys are getting paid peanuts in the first place, that pay should be secure if the org is asking them to pay for training partners and everything out of pocket in advance of the fight. It's ridiculous not to be.
Shouldn't WEC have an insurance company guaranteeing this? (Please Use More Appropriate Word).
