McFadden could be the Raiders' salvation

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Mon Sep 8, 2008 1:46 am

There's no there there, the saying goes. But that's not all that's missing in Oakland. Wins, on the off chance you haven't noticed, have been few and far between for the local NFL franchise.

How few and how far between? The Raiders in the past five seasons have finished 4-12, 2-14, 4-12, 5-11 and 4-12. That's 19-61, a ghastly .238 winning percentage. To put those numbers in perspective, the original Tampa Bay Buccaneers, those bumbling tools of ineptitude who finished 0-14 in 1976, ran up a .296 winning percentage in their first five NFL seasons.

Yeah, it's that ugly for the Performers Formerly Known as the Team of the Decades. But enough already with the sad state of affairs in the East Bay. Even with owner Al Davis approaching his 80th birthday and confined to a walker, things aren't as bad as they may seem.

There is hope in Oakland, and his name is Darren McFadden.

McFadden could prove to be the Raiders' salvation, a 21st-century multitasker on a team inexorably trapped in its glory days of yesteryear. There isn't anything McFadden can't do on a football field. He can run between the tackles, he can get to the edge and he can catch the ball. And when he does, he's a threat to score on a nanosecond's notice.

It has not been a good stretch to be a Raiders fan. A 2nd round pick is traded for and a huge contract given to an above average corner who thinks he's a great one. Meanwhile, a genuinely great CB (and a good leader) is strung along on the franchise tag.

A DT who has shown little is given an incredibly rich contract.

A WR who can't catch and can't stay healthy gets a huge contract.

With only a few positions on the roster that aren't needs, the team drafts a player in the first round at one of the few non-holes.

then...

A mediocre team missing their top WR destroys the Raiders to start the year...

If I've left anything out, let me know...

No sir, you hit them all. I had a post called "Why We're the Worst Franchise in the NFL" not too long ago. Wasn't too warmly received, but I'll happily dig it up... the contract given to DeAngelo Hall will prove to be the biggest mistake. Kelly didnt look bad, jury's out on our one-eyed WR...

I think we hit a HR with McFadden... I liked what I saw of him, in limited action. If he can prove himself in the next few weeks, I think Fargas is a goner... Fargas looked great, and the Raiduh's dont need him... Mike Bush is ready to take over as the #1B runner..

Anyone want to gamble on who the #1 receiver on the Raiders is this year? I've got Chaz Schilens (sp?) at 10:1 odds...

Yeah. The Hall signing was just ridiculous. I mean, I dont think he's as bad as he looked, but to give him 10 mil per season over 7 years, basically making him untradeable, is a disgrace. Nnamdi is miles ahead of him in terms of ability, and as Reggae said, he's being strung along on the franchise tag. Pathetic.

I love McFadden. Everytime he touches the ball, I think he's going to break one. He'll be fabulous for us, and lets be honest, his drafting is the least of our problems.

I thought Kelly and Richardson looked pretty good for us on the line, and as for Walker. Eh, we'll see.

Richardson looked great... I've started a state of the Raiders post... will post it after week 2, breaking down position by position and even going to Kiffin, Al Davis, and Ryan... its more of a bitter vent than anything :D

Well, I look forward to reading it, Reggae.

Go easy on Kiffin though. I like him. :D
